Plan enterprise storage from measured workload and business requirements—not from a drive count, a vendor’s headline maximum, or a blanket reserve percentage. Size usable capacity and performance as separate constraints, account for protection and growth, compare architectures against the workload, then validate the design with representative application tests and monitoring.
What should a storage plan establish?
A defensible plan answers two different questions: how much usable space the organization needs over its planning horizon, and whether the system can deliver the required IOPS, throughput, and latency during normal and peak periods. It also records the workload assumptions and service requirements behind those answers, so the design can be checked and updated as conditions change.
Start with an inventory of applications and data sets. Record requirements separately where production, development, test, backup, and archive workloads differ; they may not need the same performance or availability choices. Google Cloud’s storage-planning guidance recommends assessing workload and business requirements—including future capacity, access patterns, security, and cost—before comparing its cloud storage options.
Build a workload and service profile
For each application or data set, document:
- Data and access: block, file, or object interface; current data volume; expected retention; access frequency and pattern; and whether operations are mostly random or sequential.
- Performance: read/write mix, average and peak I/O size, IOPS, throughput, latency expectations, and concurrent clients. Record normal and peak demand rather than one unqualified maximum.
- Service requirements: availability, recovery objectives, consistency, replication, encryption, data residency, and access controls.
- Planning constraints: forecast capacity, planning horizon, cost limits, and any required scaling behavior.
Google Cloud’s workload questionnaire covers data type, current and future capacity, access and read/write patterns, simultaneous clients, encryption, residency, replication, consistency, I/O rate, and throughput. These are useful requirement categories beyond cloud selection; the available storage services and their specific limits remain platform-dependent.

How do you measure the existing workload?
Use operating-system, application, and storage-array telemetry where available. Dell’s 2020 storage training manual identifies Windows Perfmon and Linux iostat as possible measurement sources and lists workload IOPS, average I/O size, throughput, read/write percentage, and capacity as sizing inputs.
For every measurement, note the observation window, workload conditions, concurrency, and measurement layer—host, volume, pool, or array. A host-level number and an array-level number may describe different parts of the same I/O path. A brief peak or a platform’s advertised maximum is not a substitute for representative operating data.
When possible, benchmark the candidate storage with the application setup it will serve. Microsoft’s Azure Premium Storage guidance recommends benchmarking the application setup to observe performance effects. That is Azure-specific guidance, but the underlying planning lesson is broadly useful: validate the workload and configuration together rather than assuming component specifications predict application behavior.

How much usable storage capacity do you need?
Forecast the data that must be available to applications over a clearly stated planning horizon. Start from measured current use and documented business growth assumptions, then account for the architecture’s data-protection and operating overheads. Dell’s sizing method treats capacity and performance as separate calculations and calls for planning around future growth and peak requirements.
Separate data growth from system overhead
Make an explicit capacity worksheet for each workload or storage pool. Distinguish the space needed for application data from the space consumed or reserved by the design, including:
- replicas, parity, or other protection overhead;
- snapshots and retained versions;
- filesystem, metadata, and formatting overhead;
- operational reserve or free-space requirements; and
- any overprovisioning or allocation behavior of the selected platform.
Do not treat raw capacity, usable capacity, and currently free capacity as interchangeable. Ask the storage vendor or platform documentation how its reported figures account for protection, formatting, snapshots, and reserved space, then use a consistent definition throughout the plan.

Make growth assumptions visible
State the planning horizon and the evidence behind the forecast: observed usage history, retention policy, planned application changes, and business growth assumptions. A projection is only as representative as its input data. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal growth rate or capacity-reserve percentage for enterprise workloads; set those values from your environment and the selected platform’s requirements instead of applying an unsupported industry-wide rule.
How do you size storage for IOPS, throughput, and latency?
Set performance targets from workload behavior and service requirements, not from capacity alone. Track IOPS, throughput, and latency together, along with I/O size and read/write mix. An IOPS figure without transfer size can misstate bandwidth demand: larger operations can produce more throughput at the same IOPS.

In Azure, the VM’s performance limits must also be sufficient for the combined limits of its attached disks. Those limits describe Azure VMs and disks, not an on-premises array specification, but they illustrate a general constraint: end-to-end performance is limited by the weakest relevant component in the path.

Check the complete I/O path
Map the path from application to media, including the host or VM, controller, network, storage system, and shared pool. Compare each component’s applicable limits with the workload target. A storage device’s nominal capability cannot compensate for a lower limit elsewhere in the path, contention from other workloads, or a design that fails to deliver the expected behavior under peak or degraded conditions.
Keep latency targets tied to the application’s service requirements and the way latency was measured. Record the measurement point and workload conditions so a host observation is not mistaken for a device-only result. Where the business has not specified a latency objective, establish one with the application owner before approving a design.

Choose the storage interface and architecture around application compatibility, access pattern, resilience, security, scalability, and cost. Google Cloud distinguishes block, file, and object storage; its guide describes block storage as suitable for high-IOPS workloads such as transaction processing. That example is not a substitute for checking the application’s actual interface and workload requirements.

DAS, SAN, and NAS are also architecture choices, with different infrastructure and access trade-offs. For each candidate, compare usable capacity, expected performance, availability, failure tolerance, operational complexity, security controls, and cost against the workload profile.
Evaluate protection beyond the RAID label
No RAID level is universally right for every enterprise workload. Compare the candidate design’s usable capacity, write overhead, failure tolerance, rebuild behavior, and performance during both normal operation and a degraded state. Confirm the behavior in the storage platform’s documentation or sizing tools, and validate design-specific assumptions with a qualified architecture review.
Keep product-specific support conditions in their proper context. Microsoft’s SharePoint Server storage guidance says a supported system must consistently return the first byte of data within 20 milliseconds, and recommends RAID 10 or a vendor-specific solution with equivalent performance. These are SharePoint Server requirements and recommendations—not universal enterprise-storage latency or RAID rules. The same guidance discusses NAS in the context of content databases configured for remote BLOB storage, so it should not be read as general NAS approval for all SharePoint data.
How should you validate and maintain the design?
Test a representative workload
Before committing to a candidate architecture, benchmark representative I/O sizes, read/write patterns, and concurrency with the intended application configuration where possible. Check whether the design meets the agreed normal and peak targets for IOPS, throughput, and latency, and identify any host, network, controller, or storage limit that constrains results. Microsoft recommends validation and monitoring in its SharePoint storage guidance; Azure’s application-setup benchmarking advice is specific to Azure, but also reinforces the need to test the actual configuration.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Define the test: document workload mix, data set, I/O size, concurrency, test duration, and the performance measures and service targets to assess.
- Run representative conditions: include normal demand and the agreed peak case; where relevant, assess behavior during a degraded or recovery condition.
- Inspect the whole path: collect measurements at useful host, network, controller, and storage layers to locate bottlenecks.
- Compare results with requirements: accept the design only when observed behavior supports the workload targets and the assumptions in the capacity and protection plan.
Monitor after deployment
Compare measured utilization, growth, and performance against the plan after deployment. Revisit the forecast when workload mix, retention, protection policy, application version, or business growth changes. Update the assumptions and repeat validation when a change could alter capacity needs or the I/O path.
Google Cloud describes its storage design process as iterative. In practice, that means treating sizing as a maintained model grounded in workload observations and business requirements—not as a one-time drive-count decision.
