Plan an AI-assisted film around the story, not around a model. Decide what each scene must communicate, map the intended look and sound, then use AI for bounded tasks such as previsualization, placeholder imagery, or a specific editable timeline element. A person should still choose the shots, protect continuity, shape the edit, and approve the final work.

1. Start with story intent, not a generation prompt

Before choosing a tool, identify what each scene needs to tell the audience and what it should make them feel. For every scene, note the essential visual and sound information: for example, a character’s reaction, a story-critical prop, a change in location, or a cue that alters the mood.

Separate those requirements from choices that can change. A particular background detail might be flexible; a character’s action or a reveal that the audience must understand may not be. This distinction helps you decide where generated material could help without letting it take over the storytelling.

  • Write down the scene’s purpose and the information the audience must receive.
  • Identify the visual, performance, and sound details that must remain consistent.
  • Mark which elements can be explored or replaced during development.

A 2025 survey by Zhang et al. reports that surveyed artists considered human intervention important to narrative coherence and stylistic control. It is a finding about the artists surveyed, not a claim that every production uses the same process.

2. Build a visual plan before generating shots

Create a treatment, gather mood references, and storyboard the scenes before asking a model for footage. The storyboard should establish why each shot exists, its framing, the intended visual style, and details that need to carry across shots. Adobe describes Firefly Boards as supporting storyboard creation and alignment on a project’s overall look before production.

Use the visual plan as a reference for generation and review. If a character, location, or prop appears more than once, record the details that must match. If the story depends on a specific movement, decide what that movement needs to communicate rather than relying on a prompt alone to preserve it.

3. Plan production around bounded AI tasks

Choose a defined problem for AI to help solve rather than treating “make a film” as a single task. Possible uses described by Adobe include previsualization, exploring imagery that would be difficult to source, filling a production gap, or creating a particular element for an edit. A generated result is a candidate, not a guarantee that it will match photographed footage or the planned scene.

For each proposed use, decide in advance what a usable result must meet. That might include fitting the shot’s story purpose, matching the established look, supporting the required action, and working in the intended timeline. If a shot cannot meet those requirements after reasonable iteration, plan another approach—such as filming it, using a licensed asset, or changing the shot design.

Compare tools by the job they need to do, not by a single overall “best” label:

What to compare Question for the production
Task fit Does the tool support the needed storyboard, reference image, video, sound, or editing task?
Continuity and motion Can it produce the character, object, or movement consistency this scene requires?
Iteration and local editing Can the team compare variations and refine a result without restarting the whole workflow?
Project integration Can the output be used in the intended editing project and delivered in the required format?
Rights and provenance What terms apply to the model, inputs, outputs, and any provenance or disclosure features?
Practical constraints What costs, credits, connectivity, or other limits affect this production?

These are selection criteria, not a product ranking. Check the current terms and capabilities of the specific service and model you plan to use.

4. Generate or capture material, then curate it

When generation is appropriate, work from the storyboard and produce options to review rather than assuming the first result is final. In Premiere, Adobe’s Generative Media Tool supports selecting a timeline range, entering a text prompt, optionally adding reference frames, and generating video clips or sound effects as editable timeline clips.

  1. Define the shot or sound. State its intended story purpose and the details that need to match the visual plan.
  2. Generate candidates. Use a prompt and, where useful, reference frames. Keep the requested result focused on the element you need.
  3. Review against the scene. Check story fit, continuity, motion, and technical suitability—not just whether the result looks striking on its own.
  4. Revise or choose another route. Adjust the prompt and regenerate if the result is close but unsuitable. If it still fails the scene’s requirements, use a different source or revise the shot plan.
  5. Keep selected assets identifiable. Record what was generated and which version entered the edit.

Iteration and continuity deserve explicit planning. In Zhang et al.’s 2025 survey, 110 artists rated choosing an appropriate video-generation tool 6.45/7 and generating multiple iterations 6.05/7 for importance. In a separate survey of 100 artists, consistent character movement received an importance rating of 6.62/7, while current tool performance for that task received 4.55/7. These are self-reported ratings from the study, not objective benchmarks of all products.

5. Edit for story, pace, and sound

Bring generated material into the same editorial process as captured footage: compare alternatives, select the take that serves the scene, and shape pacing across cuts. The editor—not the generation tool—should decide what stays and whether the sequence remains coherent from shot to shot.

Use generated music for the job it suits

Adobe positions Premiere Generate Music for instrumental background, temporary tracks, and rough cuts. Its FAQ describes four variations for comparison and says generated assets are retained in a generation-history bin. Adobe also says the generated tracks are 48 kHz; confirm that the current product output and your project settings meet the delivery specification.

Adobe describes Generate Music as a tool for editors, not a replacement for musicians. Its FAQ says original scores, artist collaborations, and signature soundtracks still call for human musicians, while licensed-music workflows remain supported. Treat generated music as a fit-for-purpose editorial option, and confirm current terms and credits before relying on it in a release.

In Zhang et al.’s analysis of MIT AI Film Hack projects, AI-generated music and sound effects appeared in 12.5% of projects in 2023 and in over 50% in 2024 and 2025. Those figures describe the projects analyzed in that study; they are not an estimate of adoption across the film industry.

6. Check rights, permissions, and delivery before release

Make rights and provenance part of the production record, not a decision left until delivery. For each retained asset, record the tool and model used, prompt and reference inputs, source footage and permissions, performer approvals where relevant, and the human edits made. Keep the applicable terms for the specific service and model with the project documentation.

Vendor policies are specific to the vendor. Adobe says its Firefly models are trained on licensed and public-domain content and that customer content is not used to train them. That statement describes Adobe’s stated approach; it does not establish the training or rights practices of other models. Check the terms for the model actually used and the intended use of the film.

Get approval for digital simulations of a person

If a production will digitally simulate someone’s voice or likeness to create a new performance, confirm the relevant permissions and agreements before using it. SAG-AFTRA’s statement addresses its members and its union-contract position: it says such simulations fall within that position and advises members not to assign those rights without a basic minimum agreement with the union. This is union guidance, not a universal legal ruling. Consult the applicable contract and qualified counsel for the production’s territory and circumstances.

Run a final asset and delivery check

  • Confirm that each retained generated asset has an identifiable source, version, and record of its inputs.
  • Check that source footage, references, music, and performer uses have the required permissions for the intended release.
  • Review cuts for continuity, story clarity, sound, and technical suitability in the final timeline.
  • Verify current model terms, credits, and delivery requirements for the specific tools and distribution plan.
