Start by placing your router near the center of the areas you use most, in an open, elevated spot—not on the floor, in a cabinet, or at the far edge of the home. Then test the rooms where you need a reliable connection and adjust the position. No single location guarantees coverage in every home: walls, construction, interference, and device locations all affect results.
Choose a central, open location
A central position gives the signal a more balanced path to rooms around the home than an outer corner. The modem’s location and the length of its cable may limit where the router can go, but moving it even partway toward the middle may help. The NETGEAR placement guidance also recommends avoiding corners.
Put the router in plain view and off the floor, such as on a shelf or TV stand. Google’s guidance is to place it “off the ground and in plain view,” with the top, sides, and front unobstructed. Avoid closets and cabinets, including metal cabinets, which can block signals. A basement or attic is also a poor starting point if your goal is coverage throughout the living areas. See Google Fiber’s router placement guidance and Google’s Wi-Fi point placement advice.
Reduce obstructions and interference
Walls and solid objects weaken Wi-Fi signals, so try to keep fewer barriers between the router and the devices that need a connection. Where practical, avoid placing the router beside a microwave oven or baby monitor, which can interfere with Wi-Fi. The effect varies by home: nearby networks and devices, the client device, its distance from the router, the frequency band, and the building’s construction and layout all matter. Google outlines these factors in its Wi-Fi speed and performance guidance.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Adjust antennas for your home’s layout
If your router has adjustable external antennas, their orientation can affect where coverage is directed. NETGEAR’s guidance says a vertical antenna projects its signal horizontally, while a horizontal antenna projects it vertically. For a single-story home, it suggests keeping antennas vertical; in a multi-story home, it suggests a mix of vertical, angled, and horizontal orientations. Check your router’s manual if its instructions differ.
Test the rooms that matter
Placement advice is a starting point, not a guaranteed distance or coverage promise. Check the connection in the rooms where you actually work, stream, or browse, including any problem areas. If coverage is weak, try moving the router to a more open or central location, changing its orientation, or removing nearby obstructions. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

When to add mesh or use Ethernet
Mesh points for areas one router cannot reach
If a better router position still leaves dead zones, consider a mesh system or range extender. A point needs a usable connection back to the router or another point, so placing it in the farthest dead zone may not work well. For Google mesh products, Google recommends putting an added point roughly halfway toward the weak area, in an open location and no more than two rooms away from the router or another point. Use the Google Home mesh test to check the connection and adjust placement if needed. Those distance instructions are specific to Google products, not a universal rule for every mesh system. See Google’s point placement guidance and its mesh test instructions.
Ethernet for stationary devices
For a device that stays in one place—such as a desktop computer, television, or game console—Ethernet can avoid wireless congestion and deliver the highest speeds, according to the FCC’s consumer broadband guidance. The same guidance describes a Wi-Fi band tradeoff: 5 GHz offers higher speed but shorter range than 2.4 GHz. A band change may suit a nearby device, but it does not fix a router location that is poorly placed for the home.
