You can pin Outlook.com to the Windows taskbar by installing it as a web app in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. The installed app opens in a dedicated window with its own taskbar icon; it is not the classic desktop Outlook program.
Edge is the recommended method. Chrome also supports installing Outlook.com as a web app.
Pin Outlook.com to the taskbar using Microsoft Edge
Edge can install Outlook.com as a site app. After installation, you can pin that app to the taskbar.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Go to Outlook.com and sign in.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select More tools > Apps > Install this site as an app.
- Keep or change the proposed app name, then select Install.
- When the Outlook app window opens, right-click its icon on the taskbar.
- Select Pin to taskbar.
The pinned icon launches Outlook.com in its installed-app window, rather than a normal browser tab.

Pin the installed Outlook app if it is not on the taskbar
If Outlook installs successfully but does not appear on the taskbar, manage the app directly in Edge:
- In Edge, enter edge://apps in the address bar and press Enter.
- Find the Outlook app and select Details.
- Select Pin to taskbar.
The app’s details also offer options to pin it to Start or create a desktop shortcut.
Install and pin Outlook.com with Google Chrome
Chrome also supports installing Outlook.com as a web app.

Some sites show an Install icon in Chrome’s address bar instead. If the app is not pinned automatically, you can create shortcuts for installed apps from chrome://apps.
What the pinned Outlook icon does
The icon launches Outlook.com in an installed-app window. It is not the Microsoft 365 desktop Outlook application and does not require a Microsoft Store download.
The installed app depends on the browser used to install it. Edge-installed apps require Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft says they stop working if Edge is removed.
Installation does not make all mail, calendar, or account functions available offline. Microsoft says the web version can be accessed offline when installed as a progressive web app, but Chrome cautions that web apps may not work completely without an internet connection. Edge’s ordinary “sites as apps” do not have all the capabilities of full PWAs.

Common problems
“Install this site as an app” is missing in Edge
Use the current menu path: Settings and more > More tools > Apps > Install this site as an app. Older instructions may incorrectly place the command directly under More tools.
On a managed work or school computer, an administrator can disable Edge’s taskbar-pinning wizard through the PinningWizardAllowed policy. Contact your administrator if the option is unavailable.
The app installed but is not pinned
Open edge://apps, select the Outlook app’s Details option, and choose Pin to taskbar. This is the supported fallback rather than creating a generic shortcut to an Outlook browser tab.
Outlook opens in a browser tab
You probably created a bookmark or ordinary shortcut instead of installing the site as an app. Install Outlook through Edge’s Apps > Install this site as an app command, or Chrome’s Cast, save, and share > Install page as app… command.

The taskbar icon has an Edge or Chrome symbol
This generally indicates that the pinned item is a normal browser shortcut rather than the installed Outlook app. Unpin it, install Outlook.com as an app, and pin the installed app.
The pinned app disappears after signing in again
Microsoft documents a known limitation affecting Edge PWAs in FSLogix environments: an installed PWA can disappear after logging off and back in. If this happens on a managed device, ask your administrator to review the environment.
Windows and browser requirements
Microsoft Edge is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s Outlook instructions cover Outlook.com, Outlook on the web, and Outlook Web App in current versions of Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. Installing the web app does not require the classic desktop Outlook program.
