Chrome’s original Journeys feature grouped desktop browsing and search history by topic so you could return to an interrupted research task. Today, Chrome Help documents similar ways to revisit activity: History’s By group view and Resume browsing cards on the New Tab page. Google’s current help does not confirm that the original Journeys interface or name remains available in every Chrome version.

What Chrome Journeys did

Google announced Journeys on February 8, 2022, as a desktop Chrome feature that organized search history by topic or intent. Instead of scanning a chronological list, you could find sites related to a subject and continue researching. Google Product Manager Yana Yushkina described the goal as helping people “quickly pick up where you left off,” whether the activity was from earlier that day or weeks before. Google’s launch announcement said Journeys could also suggest related searches and used how much you had interacted with a site when ordering relevant results.

At launch, the documented route was to type a related term in the address bar and select Resume your research, or open the Chrome History Journeys page. The announcement described controls to remove an individual item, delete an entire activity cluster, or turn Journeys off. Its initial rollout was for desktop Chrome on any operating system in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Turkish. Those are launch-era details, not a current availability list.

How to resume grouped browsing in current Chrome

Use History’s By group view

  1. In Chrome on a computer, open the three-dot menu and choose History, then History again. You can also enter chrome://history in the address bar.
  2. Select the By group tab to see browsing and search history organized into groups.
  3. Open a page from the relevant group to continue. Chrome Help says computer History covers pages visited in the last 90 days; it excludes Chrome pages such as chrome://settings, Incognito pages, and pages removed from history. See Chrome Help’s History instructions.

If you are signed in and have history sync enabled, Chrome Help says History can include pages from your other devices. Deleting history also removes it from signed-in devices where history is synced.

Use a Resume browsing card

Chrome Help also documents Resume browsing cards on the New Tab page. A card can link to sites from your history and related searches. Choose Open all to open the initial search and relevant pages together in a new tab group. You can hide an individual search card if you do not want it displayed. See Chrome Help’s New Tab guidance.

Grouped research is different from reopening tabs

Chrome separately supports continuing with recently open tabs from another device. For that route, you need to be signed in to the same Google Account on both devices, and the tabs must have been opened within the last 24 hours. Language availability may vary. This feature is about open tabs, not the topic-based grouping of past research that Journeys originally provided. Chrome Help covers both Resume browsing and tab continuation on its New Tab page help page.

What to know about history, sync, and privacy

Google’s 2022 Journeys announcement said its data was grouped on the device and not saved to the Google Account at that time. That historical statement should not be treated as a blanket description of current Chrome history or sync. Current Chrome account help says users can enable sync for Chrome tabs and history, and that Chrome history saved to a Google Account may help personalize Google products when Web & App Activity is enabled. The behavior therefore depends on the feature generation and your account settings.

Chrome’s History search, powered by AI, is another separate feature—not a renamed Journeys mode. Chrome Help says it is available to users in the US who use Chrome in English. When enabled, it stores page contents locally, encrypted on the device, in addition to page titles and URLs. Only sites visited after activation may appear in AI-powered results, which draw on the content captured when you visited a site. The feature returns up to three best matches and offers time filters for yesterday, the last seven days, and the last 30 days. To turn it off, use Settings > AI innovations. Details are in Chrome Help’s AI History search documentation.

Which route should you use?

What you want to find Chrome route Important distinction
Related past searches and pages History > By group, or a New Tab page Resume browsing card These are the current help-documented grouped-history routes; current help does not confirm Journeys branding.
A tab you recently had open on another device Recently open tabs / tab continuation Requires the same signed-in Google Account on both devices; the tab must have been opened within 24 hours.
A page you remember by subject or content AI-powered History search, if eligible and enabled Separate feature; US and English requirements apply, and page contents are stored locally when enabled.

The exact current Chrome version, platform-by-platform rollout, and availability of a Journeys-branded page are not established in Google’s current help pages. Use the labels shown in your own Chrome installation rather than assuming the 2022 interface is unchanged.
