Choose an angle that shows what makes the model recognizable, light it on purpose, keep the background plain, hold the camera still, then check the photo at full size before you post. The official LEGO guidance behind this is short, so this guide labels what comes from LEGO and what is general photography practice.
What the official LEGO sources actually say
Knowing the source of each tip helps you judge how far to trust it.
- Angle: The LEGO Group’s page “Perfecting the Art of Showcasing Your LEGO Family Builds” suggests looking from above to admire a miniature world, and roughly 45 degrees as an example for planes and spaceships.
- Light: The same page says lighting is key. It suggests light from below or creative angles for dramatic shadows, and spotlights to draw attention to details.
- Background: A 2023 LEGO Life magazine activity (“Galactic Photo Shoot”, issue 5) has kids fold a page into a ground and backdrop, place their creations on it, turn on lights and take pictures. It ends with the line “HAVING FUN WHILE EXPERIMENTING IS THE BEST WAY TO LEARN GREAT PHOTOGRAPHY!” It is a children’s activity, not a technical study.
- Stability: In LEGO’s stop-motion guide, animator Jon Rolph says: “You can build a nice holder for your camera. That’s a good way of keeping it still.” That is about stop motion. Using a stable surface or small tripod for still photos is a sensible adaptation, not a LEGO still-photo rule.
- Lightbox: Warhammer Community’s miniature-photography guide suggests considering a lightbox. That is hobby advice for miniatures, not LEGO guidance, and you don’t need one.
None of these sources gives exposure settings, a best backdrop color or any statistics, so this article doesn’t invent any. Everything beyond the list above is ordinary practical advice that you can test yourself in a few minutes.
Step 1: Set up a simple scene
- Clear the area around the build. Stray bricks, cables and clutter distract the eye faster than you expect.
- Put the model on a plain surface. Folding a sheet of paper so it curves from the floor up into a backdrop, as in LEGO’s activity, removes the hard line where table meets wall.
- Pick a backdrop that separates from the model. If the model is white, a white background will swallow it. Try a couple of colors and compare. No color is proven best.
- Dust the model with a soft brush and check for loose pieces, misaligned studs and stickers that have peeled. A close-up photo exposes all of these.
Step 2: Choose an angle that shows the build
Ask what makes this build recognizable, then put the camera where that feature is visible.

| Viewpoint | Good for | Source of the idea |
|---|---|---|
| Overhead or high angle | Layouts, dioramas, miniature worlds, anything where the arrangement matters | LEGO family-builds page |
| About 45 degrees, three-quarter view | Planes, spaceships and vehicles; shows front, side and top at once, which gives depth | LEGO family-builds page (planes and spaceships example) |
| Eye level with the minifigures | Scenes with characters; makes the viewer feel inside the scene | General practice, not from the LEGO sources |
| Straight-on front | Facades, buildings, mosaics | General practice |
Take a few test frames from different heights before committing. Keep the phone’s lens at the height of the part you want to emphasize, and fill the frame with the model so the viewer isn’t squinting at a tiny build in a large empty picture.
Step 3: Use light on purpose
LEGO calls lighting key, and it is usually the biggest change you can make without buying anything.
Start with available light
Put the scene beside a window and shoot with the light falling on the model from the side. Daylight is free and soft. Avoid mixing daylight with a warm lamp, because the two give different color casts and your whites will look uneven.

Then try directional light
LEGO suggests experimenting with light from below or from creative angles for dramatic shadows. A desk lamp or phone flashlight moved around the model shows how shadows change the mood. A spotlight effect, also mentioned by LEGO, draws attention to one detail such as a cockpit or a minifigure face.
Fix problems before buying gear
- Harsh, hard shadows: move the lamp farther away, or bounce it off a white wall or paper.
- Glare on glossy bricks: shift the light source to the side so the reflection doesn’t point back at the lens.
- Dark photo: add light rather than relying on the phone’s brightening, which often adds grain.
A lightbox is one optional route for small builds because it surrounds the model with even light. Try the paper-and-window approach first.
Step 4: Keep the camera steady
Handheld is quick, but small movements cause blur in dim rooms and make framing change between shots. Prop the phone against a stack of books or a mug, or use a small tripod or a holder you build from bricks, which echoes Jon Rolph’s advice. Use the phone’s timer, or volume-button release, so your tap doesn’t shake it. A fixed camera also lets you take a matching series of photos of the same build, which looks consistent on a profile or gallery.

Step 5: Focus, review and edit lightly
- Tap the part of the model you want sharp, usually the focal feature or a minifigure’s face.
- Zoom the photo to full size on screen. Look for blur, dust, fingerprints and cut-off corners.
- Retake after fixing anything you see. A reshoot is faster than editing.
- Crop to remove empty space and straighten tilted horizons. Small tweaks to brightness and contrast are usually enough; heavy filters change brick colors.
Step 6: Share the photo
- Post the best angle first and put alternates after it, so viewers get the strongest view immediately.
- Add the set name or number, or say it is your own design, and mention any notable techniques or part counts.
- Check the posting rules and image size recommendations of the platform you use. Those change, and this article doesn’t cover any platform’s current policy.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Photo looks blurry | Hand movement or slow shutter in dim light | Rest the phone on a firm surface, use the timer, add light |
| Model blends into the background | Similar colors | Swap the backdrop for a contrasting plain color |
| Colors look yellow or blue | Mixed or colored light | Use one light type and avoid colored walls near the model |
| Model looks flat | Light from directly behind the camera | Move light to the side or slightly above |
| Build looks tiny | Camera too far away | Move closer or crop |
| Distracting reflections | Glossy plastic facing the light | Angle the light or the model |

This part isn’t about photographing bricks. It is for builders who also publish a gallery page, a blog post or a set-instructions page, and want a clean preview image of that page. A screenshot of the web page isn’t a photo of the build, so use it for a thumbnail or share card, not instead of your camera. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server: one GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG or WebP image, or a PDF. Parameters are in the ScreenshotNeo docs.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with your own gallery page. Why use it:
- Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot, so the preview shows your page and not the overlays.
- Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads are never billed, and neither are cache hits. The X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers tell you which one you got.
- An MCP server lets AI agents such as Claude or Cursor take screenshots with the take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.
- 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 a month.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a lightbox to photograph LEGO builds?
No. A lightbox is an optional route for small builds, suggested in miniature-photography guidance rather than by LEGO. A window, a lamp and a sheet of paper are enough to start.
Can I use my phone instead of a camera?
Yes. The steps here, covering angle, light, plain background, a steady phone and a full-size review, work with any phone camera.
What backdrop color should I use?
None is proven best. Pick a plain color that contrasts with your model and test two or three.
Is the ScreenshotNeo API needed to photograph LEGO?
No. Your camera makes the photo of the build. The API only helps if you want a clean image of a web page, such as a gallery or instructions page.
