Mount your DSLR or mirrorless camera on a steady tripod, frame a broad area of dark sky with a wide-angle lens, focus manually on a star, and take repeated test-adjusted exposures. A meteor may not appear in any particular frame, so the practical goal is to keep the camera recording while conditions are good and give luck more chances to work.

1. Choose a dark, clear observing location

Find a safe spot with an unobstructed view and as little artificial light as practical. Check cloud cover, the Moon’s rise and set, the shower’s activity, and whether its radiant—the apparent point from which shower meteors seem to originate—is above your local horizon. Light pollution, moonlight, clouds, and a low radiant can all reduce the number of meteors you see. The American Meteor Society’s meteor FAQ explains that published rates are idealized guides, not a promise of what an observer will see. It says many showers are best observed from midnight to dawn, but the best time depends on the shower and your location.

Do not use old shower-rate charts as a forecast. NASA’s shower chart is labeled for 2019 and gives estimates under ideal conditions; it is not a current calendar. Plan with current shower information alongside local weather, Moon, radiant, and horizon conditions.

2. Set up the camera for steady, repeated exposures

Stabilize the camera and reduce shutter movement

Secure the camera on a tripod before composing. A lightweight tripod can be sufficient; stability matters more than buying an expensive model. To avoid shaking the camera when pressing the shutter, use a remote release, the self-timer, or Wi-Fi shutter control if your camera supports it. NASA’s meteor-shower photography guide describes these options.

Frame a broad patch of sky

A wide-angle lens covers more sky, improving the odds that a meteor crosses your frame. It also makes the meteor look smaller in the finished image. You do not have to point directly at a shower’s radiant: perspective makes meteor paths appear to converge there, but meteors can appear over a wide area. Trails farther from the radiant can look longer. Use the radiant to understand where the shower is coming from, then compose a broad view that includes sky you want in the photograph. An existing compatible lens may be enough; a purchase is optional.

Focus manually on a star

Switch to manual focus. Infinity is a starting point, not a guarantee of sharp stars. Use live view or a short test exposure, magnify a bright star, and adjust focus until it appears sharp. NASA notes that autofocus may struggle at night to find something to focus on. Recheck focus after moving the lens or camera.

3. Choose a starting exposure, then test it

There is no universally correct shutter speed. Your useful exposure depends on lens focal length and field of view, how much light is in the sky, your aperture and ISO, and how much star trailing you will accept.

Guidance Value How to use it
NASA’s 500 Rule example 25 seconds with a 20 mm lens NASA’s 2024-updated guide presents this as an approximate limit for keeping stars point-like: divide 500 by focal length in millimeters. It is not a precision guarantee for every sensor or viewing standard.
Canon’s meteor-exposure range 15–30 seconds Canon recommends this as a useful starting range; its page does not state a publication date. Test with your own camera, lens, framing, and sky conditions.

Take a test frame and inspect the stars, sky brightness, and detail. If the image is too dark, NASA suggests opening the aperture by choosing a lower f-number or raising ISO. Change one setting at a time so you can see what improved the image. Shorten the exposure if the stars trail more than you want; if the sky becomes too bright, adjust exposure rather than assuming a longer shutter time is always better.

4. Keep the camera capturing frames

Once focus and exposure are acceptable, run repeated exposures across the observing session. Canon recommends continuous time-lapse capture over a few hours, which produces more frames and gives you more compositional choices. Use a camera interval or time-lapse feature, or a compatible external control if available. Confirm that the camera has enough battery and storage for the session, and check that the tripod and framing remain steady.

Review the images after or during the session without expecting a meteor in every frame. Capturing one is a matter of time and luck, not a setting that guarantees a result.

5. Set realistic expectations for the shower

The American Meteor Society describes ZHR (Zenithal Hourly Rate) as a standardized estimate under ideal conditions. It is not the number of meteors a particular photographer should expect to see. Your actual results depend on the shower, how close you are to its peak, the sky, Moonlight, and radiant visibility. A dark, clear view and many frames improve your opportunity; they cannot ensure a meteor will cross your composition.
