Meteors appear without warning, so a sequence improves your odds but cannot guarantee one in any particular frame.
What you need before you start
- A dark location with a broad, unobstructed view of the sky. City glow makes faint meteors and their photographs harder to see, according to NASA’s meteor-photography guide.
- A securely mounted phone or camera. A tripod is ideal, but a stable surface can work, particularly for a phone. A timer or remote release helps prevent shake when a camera exposure starts.
- A wide field of view. A wide-angle lens—or a phone’s main wide camera—covers more sky than a tight telephoto view, increasing the chance that a meteor crosses the frame.
For a dedicated camera, a lens with a wide maximum aperture gathers more light. NASA’s skywatching overview describes f/3.5 or faster as useful; a lower f-number means a wider aperture. NASA’s meteor-shower overview also explains that showers recur annually as Earth passes through debris trails shed by comets and asteroids.
How to photograph meteors with a dedicated camera
- Set up for a wide, stable view. Mount the camera on a tripod, choose a wide-angle lens, and compose a broad area of unobstructed sky. Keep the camera display dim and avoid checking it repeatedly if you want to preserve your dark adaptation.
- Switch to manual focus. Autofocus can struggle in darkness. Aim at a bright star, magnify the live view or a test image, and adjust focus until the star appears as a small, sharp point. Recheck if the lens temperature changes or focus drifts.
- Take and inspect a test frame. Start with an exposure of a few seconds, then inspect the stars for sharpness and the frame for brightness. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what improved the image.
- Begin a repeated sequence. Use the widest practical aperture and a built-in intervalometer or compatible remote to capture frames continuously. A recent specialist guide suggests 15–25-second exposures at ISO 1600–3200 as a dark-site starting point, not a universal recipe. Adjust for your lens, sensor, sky brightness, moonlight, and how much star trailing you will accept. See Meteor Shower’s photography guide.
- Prevent shutter shake. Use the camera’s timer or a remote release instead of touching the camera as each exposure begins.
How to photograph meteors with a phone
- Secure the phone. Use a small tripod or another stable surface; a phone mount is useful only if your existing support cannot hold the phone securely.
- Choose a wide view. Use the main wide camera and frame a broad patch of sky rather than zooming in tightly.
- Enable night mode or manual controls if available. Phone controls and night modes vary by model. Some devices can make decent night-sky images on stable support, but processing and exposure behavior are not consistent across phones. NASA’s smartphone meteor-photography guide is an older PDF, so its app-specific examples may not match current devices.
- Capture repeated images. If your phone software allows it, take a sequence of still images. Night modes may blend or computationally process exposures; do not assume a mode records one long continuous exposure or reliably captures faint meteors. A specialist guide suggests 15–30-second phone exposures as an indicative way to capture brighter fireballs, but the setting is not available or guaranteed on every device.
- Check the framing and focus before the shower is active. Once the sequence starts, avoid moving the phone.
Where and when to point the camera
The radiant is the apparent point in the sky from which a shower’s meteors seem to originate. It is useful for planning, but you do not need to point directly at it. NASA advises aiming generally near the radiant while composing a broad sky area. A specialist guide recommends aiming somewhat to the side because trails near the radiant can look foreshortened; its 40–60-degree suggestion is compositional guidance, not a fixed rule.
Include a landscape feature if it helps give the sky image context, while keeping enough open sky in the frame. NASA says the brightest rates are often in the hours after midnight and before dawn, but a good local session also depends on the particular shower, radiant altitude, Moon, weather, and horizon. Check dates and local conditions close to the event rather than relying on a generic time for every shower.

Phone or camera: which should you use?
| Consideration | Phone | Dedicated camera |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure and focus control | Depends on the phone’s software; night mode and manual controls differ by model. | Manual exposure and focus are available on cameras with those controls. |
| Sky coverage and light gathering | The main wide camera gives a broad view; results depend on the phone’s lens and processing. | A wide-angle lens covers more sky than a telephoto lens; a wider maximum aperture gathers more light. |
| Repeated capture | Depends on whether the phone software can repeat still exposures. | A built-in intervalometer or compatible remote can automate repeated exposures. |
| Support and release | A stable surface may suffice; use a mount only if needed to secure the phone. | A tripod is recommended for long exposures; the built-in timer or remote reduces movement at release. |
Use the device you can keep stable and set to capture repeatedly. A dedicated camera offers more direct control when its manual settings and intervalometer are available; a phone can be a practical option if its night-sky controls and support suit the task.

Getting one meteor in a frame is a normal outcome, even when you capture many images. The NASA guide describes combining individual meteor photographs. If you make a composite, align the frames on the stars and include only meteor trails that appear in the actual source frames. Label the result as a composite so it is not mistaken for a single exposure.
