On an iPhone with a Home button, press that button to go Home or double-click it to switch apps. Here are 15 useful gestures and controls, with the model differences called out. Not every gesture applies to every iPhone, and Apple does not present these as an official list of 15.
Identify your iPhone’s navigation controls
Look for a physical Home button below the display. If your iPhone has one, use the Home-button instructions below. If it does not, use the Face ID instructions. Control Center and app-switching gestures differ between the two types.
Apple’s basic gesture guide describes taps, holds, swipes, scrolling and pinching. A swipe’s effect depends on where you start and what the app supports; swiping left or right is not a universal back command.

Go to the Home Screen (Face ID)
Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen. Lift your finger as you reach the middle; do not pause. See Apple’s Face ID gesture guide.

Open the App Switcher (Face ID)
Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause near the middle of the screen until the open-app cards appear. Swipe through the cards, then tap one to open that app. Apple also documents this in its app-switching guide.

Move between open apps (Face ID)
Swipe left or right along the very bottom edge to move between recently used apps. Apple describes the movement as swiping up from the bottom edge, then right or left. See Apple’s Face ID gesture guide.

Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. Starting near the top center may open Notification Center instead. See Apple’s Control Center instructions.

Return to the first Control Center group
Swipe up along the icons at the right edge until you reach the first group.

Close Control Center (Face ID)
Swipe up from the bottom center of the screen, or tap the display outside Control Center.

Open Control Center (Home-button iPhone)
Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen. This is the reverse of the Face ID gesture for opening Control Center. Apple’s instructions distinguish the two.

Switch to a recent app (Home-button iPhone)
Double-click the physical Home button to see recently used apps. Swipe through the app cards and tap the app you want. This is a button action, not a swipe; Apple covers it in its app-switching guide.

Swipe through content
Swipe left or right across a list, page or screen when the app supports moving horizontally. The result varies by app, so do not assume the gesture always goes back.

Scroll through a list
Touch the screen and drag one finger without lifting it to scroll. A quick swipe moves through content faster.

Zoom with a pinch
Place two fingers on a photo or webpage and move them apart to zoom in, or together to zoom out. In supported content, double-tapping can also zoom in or out.

Cycle through apps with VoiceOver
When VoiceOver is on, swipe left or right with four fingers to move between open apps. VoiceOver changes how touch gestures work, so consult Apple’s VoiceOver instructions for the gesture set that applies.
Use AssistiveTouch for an onscreen navigation route
If using physical buttons or standard touch gestures is difficult, AssistiveTouch can provide onscreen access to controls such as Home, Control Center, notifications and App Switcher. To turn it on, go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch. You can also configure custom or multifinger gestures. Apple’s AssistiveTouch guide explains its options.
