An animated WebP does not include a built-in play or pause button. Its file data controls frame timing and how many times the animation repeats; interactive controls must be provided by the page that displays it. The right approach depends on how the animation is rendered.
What controls an animated WebP?
WebP is a RIFF-based image format that supports lossy and lossless images, transparency, and animation. In an animated file, the ANIM chunk stores global parameters such as the background color and loop count, while ANMF chunks describe the individual frames in display order. Frame durations are expressed in milliseconds. The format specification explains how a viewer reconstructs and repeats the animation; it does not define a user-facing pause control. See RFC 9649, WebP Image Format.
Looping is not pausing
The WebP loop count controls repetition: zero means repeat indefinitely, while a nonzero stored count is interpreted as that count minus one. This changes how playback repeats, not whether a viewer can pause or resume it. Very short or zero frame durations may also be interpreted by implementations, so file timing is not a reliable substitute for an interactive control.
How can a page let visitors pause it?
Add controls in the web experience when users need to stop or start the animation. The implementation depends on how the animation is rendered: the Web Animations API documentation describes Animation.pause() for an Animation object, but that does not establish a universal pause method for an animated WebP displayed as an ordinary image. Do not assume an image loaded directly by the page exposes that API. See MDN: Animation.pause().

- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
If you need a specific implementation, first choose the rendering approach and verify that it supports the controls you intend to offer in your target browsers. The available sources do not establish one browser-independent recipe for pausing an ordinary animated WebP image.
When are pause controls an accessibility concern?
WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.2.2 applies to qualifying moving, blinking, or scrolling information that starts automatically, lasts more than five seconds, and is presented alongside other content. It requires a mechanism to pause, stop, or hide that content unless the movement is essential to an activity; the criterion also covers auto-updating information and states further conditions and exceptions. Read the full WCAG 2.2 criterion before making a compliance claim.

As practical implementation guidance, web.dev recommends giving people who have indicated a reduced-motion preference control over animations, including dedicated play and pause controls. That guidance is useful design advice, distinct from WCAG’s exact normative requirements. See web.dev: prefers-reduced-motion.

| Approach | What it changes | What it does not provide |
|---|---|---|
| Set the WebP repeat behavior | The animation’s file-level loop count determines whether and how often playback repeats. | An interactive pause or play control for the viewer. |
| Add controls to the web experience | Visitors can control playback, subject to the capabilities of the chosen rendering method. | A universal solution independent of how the WebP is displayed. |
Google’s WebP documentation describes tools such as libwebp, cwebp, and dwebp for working with WebP files. Those are file and tooling resources; changing an image with them does not, by itself, add a pause button to a page. Google’s WebP FAQ includes browser-version listings, but those listings are historical and should not be treated as current browser-support guidance.
