To password-protect notes in OneNote, protect the section that contains them. In the current Windows desktop app, right-click the section tab, select Password Protect This Section, then choose Set Password in the Password Protection pane. Enter and confirm the password, then select OK. The exact menu differs on Mac and iPhone or iPad; OneNote for the web can unlock a protected section but cannot set or change its password.
Protect a section in OneNote for Windows
These steps apply to OneNote for Microsoft 365, OneNote 2024, OneNote 2021, and OneNote 2016 for Windows desktop, as covered by Microsoft’s Windows desktop instructions.
- Right-click the section tab you want to protect.
- Select Password Protect This Section.
- In the Password Protection pane, select Set Password.
- Enter the password, enter it again to confirm, and select OK.
To lock protected sections immediately, open the same Password Protection pane and select Lock All. You can also right-click a section tab and choose Change Password or Remove Password; you must provide the current password.
Protect a section on Mac
In OneNote for Mac, Control-click the section tab, then follow these steps from Microsoft’s Mac instructions.

- Choose Password Protection > Protect This Section.
- Enter the password, verify it, and select Set Password.
- To lock it, Control-click the section tab again and choose Password Protection > Lock Section.
The Password Protection menu also includes Lock All Protected Sections. To change or remove a password, unlock the section if necessary, Control-click its tab, choose Change Password or Remove Password under Password Protection, and provide the current password.
Protect a section on iPhone or iPad
Microsoft’s iPhone and iPad instructions use the section list. Reveal the list, press and hold the section name, then use the padlock controls to protect the section. The same section controls let you change or remove its password. Enter the password to unlock it. Labels and available controls can vary with the app version and device.

Unlock a protected section on the web
In OneNote for the web, select the protected section and enter its password to unlock it. Microsoft’s web instructions direct users to a desktop or mobile OneNote app to create protection or change a password.

Protection applies to a section, not a page or notebook
A password protects a section’s contents, not an entire notebook or an individual page. To protect the notes on one page, move or copy them into a section of their own and protect that section. Microsoft’s OneNote for Mac FAQ also addresses these section-level limits.

Locked sections are unavailable to search and collaboration features
OneNote excludes locked sections from notebook searches; unlock the section before searching its contents. In Windows desktop, note flags in locked sections are also left out of the note-flag summary. Microsoft says protected sections are unavailable to others in a live sharing session unless you remove their password protection before starting or joining that session. Password protection has limits
Microsoft describes protected sections as secured with 128-bit AES encryption in its web and iPhone/iPad help, but also warns that password protection is not foolproof. Audio and video recordings are stored as separate files and cannot be password-protected. Microsoft advises against keeping extremely sensitive information, such as financial-account access codes, in OneNote.

Before you lock a section
- Save the password somewhere safe. Passwords are case-sensitive, and Microsoft says it cannot recover a forgotten section password—even through Microsoft Support.
- Know how automatic locking works on your app. Protected sections lock automatically after inactivity. Microsoft describes this as occurring after a few minutes on Mac and mobile. Windows desktop provides settings for the lock duration and for locking when navigating away; controls are not identical across apps.
- Use the current Windows app. OneNote for Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025. Microsoft’s older Windows 10 help page describes that legacy app, not the current Windows desktop app.
