To password-protect a drive in Windows, encrypt it: use Device Encryption if your supported device offers it, or use BitLocker Drive Encryption on Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education. For USB drives, BitLocker To Go provides the removable-drive option. Encryption protects data if a drive is removed or accessed offline; keep the recovery key somewhere separate from the computer.

Choose the right Windows encryption option

Windows has two built-in routes, and which one you can use depends on your Windows edition, device support, and the type of drive. Manual BitLocker Drive Encryption is available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. Device Encryption is available on a wider range of devices, including some running Windows Home.

Option Windows edition and device Drive coverage How it is managed
Device Encryption Available on supported devices, including some Windows Home devices; requirements must be met. System and fixed drives. May turn on automatically during setup or sign-in with a Microsoft or work or school account; can also be checked in Settings.
BitLocker Drive Encryption Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education; administrator access required. Fixed data drives and removable drives, including USB drives through BitLocker To Go. Turn on and manage encryption for an individual drive.

Microsoft’s documentation applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the exact Settings wording can vary by release. Device Encryption and manually managed BitLocker are distinct features; see Microsoft’s BitLocker overview.

Check Device Encryption on Windows Home or another supported device

  1. Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
  2. Open Settings and select Privacy & security > Device encryption. Settings navigation may differ slightly by Windows release.
  3. If Device Encryption is available, turn it on and confirm that its recovery key is backed up somewhere you can reach without the computer.
  4. If the option is missing, check the device’s encryption support and prerequisites using Microsoft’s Device Encryption guidance. The device may not meet requirements, or the signed-in account may not be an administrator.

Device Encryption can turn on automatically when you first set up or sign in to a device with a Microsoft or work or school account. Using a local account does not enable it automatically. A usable TPM and a configured Windows Recovery Environment are among the prerequisites that may affect availability.

Encrypt a fixed data drive or USB drive with BitLocker

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Open Start, type BitLocker, then select Manage BitLocker.
  3. Find the drive under Fixed data drives or, for a USB drive, Removable data drives (BitLocker To Go).
  4. Select Turn on BitLocker beside the target drive. Choose an unlock option when prompted.
  5. Back up the recovery key to a location separate from the protected computer, then continue through the setup prompts.
  6. Allow encryption to finish. You can continue using the device while encryption progresses.

If Manage BitLocker does not appear, check your Windows edition: manual BitLocker Drive Encryption is not available on Windows Home. Microsoft’s BitLocker Drive Encryption instructions cover supported editions, drive categories, and setup.

Back up the recovery key before you need it

A BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit number. Depending on how encryption was set up, it may be associated with a Microsoft account or a work or school account, or saved to a file, printed, or stored on a USB flash drive. The available backup choices depend on the setup flow. Store a copy somewhere you can access if Windows asks for it, and do not keep a USB backup or printout with the protected computer. See Microsoft’s instructions to back up your BitLocker recovery key.

Microsoft Support says it cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key; if the key is unavailable and the change that triggered recovery cannot be undone, resetting the device may remove files. Follow Microsoft’s recovery-key lookup guidance.
