You can partition an external hard drive with Windows Disk Management or Mac Disk Utility. Before changing the drive, back up its files and verify that you have selected the correct physical disk: formatting or erasing removes data. For a drive shared between Windows and Mac, choose a Windows-compatible file system such as ExFAT, subject to the needs of the devices that will use it.
What partitioning does—and what it can erase
Partitioning divides a physical disk into separate areas that the operating system presents as volumes. You might use separate volumes for different kinds of files or different purposes. Formatting is a separate step that prepares a volume with a file system, such as ExFAT or APFS.
Back up files before changing a disk’s layout. Microsoft warns that formatting a volume destroys its data, and Apple warns that erasing a disk or volume removes all its files. The steps below do not guarantee that an existing drive can be repartitioned without data loss.
Choose a partition scheme and file system
Partition scheme and file system solve different problems. The scheme describes how partitions are organized on the disk; the file system determines how a volume stores and presents files. Windows offers GPT and MBR when initializing a disk. For file-system choices, consider which operating systems need to read and write the drive.

| Choice | When it fits |
|---|---|
| GPT | Microsoft recommends GPT for a modern UEFI system when large-drive support or more than four partitions is needed. This is guidance for the documented Windows context, not a guarantee for every device. Microsoft’s Disk Management guide. |
| MBR | For older hardware or operating systems that do not support UEFI, according to Microsoft’s guidance. Microsoft’s Disk Management guide. |
| ExFAT | Apple lists ExFAT as Windows-compatible and recommends it for Windows-compatible volumes over 32 GB. It is a practical option for ordinary Windows/Mac file sharing. Apple’s Disk Utility guide and Apple’s file-system reference. |
| MS-DOS (FAT) | Apple recommends this Windows-compatible format for volumes of 32 GB or less. Apple’s Disk Utility guide and Apple’s file-system reference. |
| APFS | Apple’s default file system for macOS 10.13 or later; Apple also says it can be used on external direct-attached storage. It is a Mac-focused choice, not the Windows-compatible option described above. Apple’s file-system reference. |
Compatibility with ExFAT or FAT is not established for every console, television, router, camera, or other device. Check the target device’s supported file systems before formatting the drive for it.
Partition an external drive in Windows 10 or 11
Microsoft says Disk Management works the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open it by right-clicking Start and selecting Disk Management, searching for Create and format hard disk partitions, or running diskmgmt.msc. You need administrator access to create or format a volume.

Set up a new disk
- Connect the drive, open Disk Management, and identify the correct physical disk by checking its details and capacity before making changes.
- If Windows shows the disk as offline, bring it online. If Windows prompts you to initialize it, select GPT or MBR according to the compatibility guidance above.
- If the disk has unallocated space, right-click that space and choose New Simple Volume.
- In the wizard, specify the volume size in MB, assign or accept a drive letter, then choose whether to format now or defer formatting.
- If you format now, select a file system suitable for the devices that will use the drive. Confirm the selection before completing the wizard.
Some USB disks cannot be initialized in Disk Management and instead need to be formatted and assigned a drive letter. Follow the options Windows presents for the specific disk.
Create space on a disk that already has a volume
Disk Management can shrink an existing partition to create unallocated space, then use that space for a new simple volume. Select the correct disk and back up important files before changing the layout. Do not assume that shrinking and creating a volume will preserve every existing disk configuration or eliminate the risk of data loss.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- In Disk Management, right-click the volume you want to shrink and choose the shrink option.
- Enter the amount of space to shrink, in MB, and confirm. Windows displays the resulting unallocated space.
- Right-click the unallocated space, choose New Simple Volume, and follow the wizard to set its size, drive letter, and formatting choice.
Format an existing Windows volume
Right-click the volume in Disk Management and choose Format. Microsoft warns that formatting destroys data on that partition. A quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume; a normal format fully erases it and takes longer. Choose only after confirming that the selected volume is the one you intend to format.
Partition or format an external drive on Mac
Disk Utility’s erase workflow removes files from the selected disk or volume. Back up first, and verify that the sidebar selection is the external physical disk you intend to change.

- Confirm Erase only when you are ready to remove the files on the selected disk or volume.
Apple’s documented workflow supports erasing and setting up the selected disk; it does not establish a universal, no-data-loss method for repartitioning every existing external drive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you partition a drive without formatting it?
It depends on the drive’s current layout and the operation. Windows can create a volume from unallocated space, and it can shrink an existing volume to produce unallocated space. But the official guidance does not establish that every existing disk can be repartitioned safely without data loss. Back up first, and do not treat creating a partition, shrinking a volume, or formatting as interchangeable actions.

For the ordinary workflows described here, Windows Disk Management and Mac Disk Utility provide built-in ways to create, format, or manage volumes. The official guidance cited here does not establish a need to buy third-party partition software.
