On iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth; on Android, open Bluetooth settings and choose Pair new device. The earbuds’ pairing button or gesture depends on the model, so check its instructions if you are unsure how to make them discoverable.
Before you start
- Make sure the earbuds have charge and are powered on.
- Keep them near the phone. Apple gives an approximate Bluetooth accessory pairing range of 33 feet (10 meters); staying closer can make setup easier. See Apple’s Bluetooth accessory pairing instructions.
- Find the earbuds’ manual or official setup instructions. Pairing mode is controlled by the earbuds, and the button or gesture differs by model.
Pair earbuds with an iPhone
- Put the earbuds into pairing or discovery mode using the method specified by their maker.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- Wait for the earbuds’ name to appear, then tap it. If the phone asks for a PIN or passcode, use the information in the earbuds’ instructions.
Apple’s instructions are available at Pair a Bluetooth accessory with your iPhone or iPad.
Pair earbuds with an Android phone
- Put the earbuds into pairing mode according to their instructions.
- Open your phone’s Bluetooth settings. On Google’s documented route, swipe down from the top of the screen, touch and hold Bluetooth, then tap Pair new device. Menu names and navigation can differ on phones from other manufacturers.
- Choose the earbuds under available devices and follow any prompts on screen.
Google’s standard setup steps are in Find and set up Bluetooth devices near your Android device.
When Android Fast Pair is available
Some compatible earbuds can show a Fast Pair notification when they are nearby. Google lists compatible Fast Pair earbuds, Bluetooth and Location turned on, and proximity as prerequisites. Fast Pair is not supported by every pair of earbuds. If no notification appears, use the Bluetooth settings steps above instead. See Google’s Fast Pair instructions.

Pair AirPods with Android
AirPods can connect to an Android phone through Bluetooth, although some Apple ecosystem features may not be available. For standard AirPods, open Android Bluetooth settings and tap Pair new device. Put the AirPods in their case and open the lid, then hold the case button until the status light flashes white. Select the AirPods on the phone. AirPods Max use a different control: hold the noise-control button until the status light flashes white, then select them in Android’s device list. Google documents these steps in its Bluetooth device setup guide; check the instructions for your particular AirPods model if its controls differ.
Reconnect earbuds you have already paired
After the first pairing, the phone and earbuds may connect automatically when Bluetooth is on and the earbuds are available. If they do not, open Bluetooth settings and tap the earbuds in the phone’s saved-device list. Google notes that devices can connect automatically after their first pairing in Android Help.

If the earbuds do not appear or connect
They do not show in the device list
- Check that the earbuds are charged, on, close to the phone, and in pairing mode. Follow the maker’s steps for discovery mode rather than assuming a generic button press will work.
- Reopen or refresh the available-device list and wait for the earbuds’ name to appear.
- If the earbuds were paired before, remove or forget their old entry on the phone, put them back into pairing mode, and try again. If they are connected to another phone or tablet, disconnect or unpair them there too.
Apple’s pairing guide and Bluetooth troubleshooting steps cover these checks.
Pairing still fails
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then try pairing again.
- Restart the phone and the earbuds, and retry with the earbuds in pairing mode.
- Check whether the earbuds connect to another device. If they do, remove their saved pairing from that device before trying again with the phone.
- If your Android menus do not match the steps, consult the phone manufacturer’s instructions; Android settings vary by device.
For iPhone, Apple advises contacting support if Bluetooth is unavailable or greyed out, no accessories can connect, or the accessory maker confirms the earbuds are working. Android users should contact their phone maker for device-specific Bluetooth behavior. See Apple’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide and Google’s Android Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
