First check that your exact iPad supports your Apple Pencil model: the four Pencil families do not all work with the same iPads, and each pairs differently. Once you have confirmed compatibility in Apple’s compatibility guide, follow the instructions for your Pencil below.
Check compatibility before pairing
Apple lists supported iPad models separately for Apple Pencil (1st generation), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Apple Pencil Pro. Do not assume a Pencil will work just because its connector fits or it attaches magnetically. Check your iPad’s exact model in Apple’s compatibility guide before troubleshooting or buying an adapter.
For example, Apple lists Apple Pencil Pro for iPad mini (A17 Pro); iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch with M2, M3, or M4; and iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch with M4 or M5. The USB-C model has a different compatibility list, so use Apple’s full table rather than treating these examples as a complete list.
Pair by Apple Pencil model
Apple Pencil (1st generation)
On a compatible iPad with a Lightning connector, remove the Pencil’s cap and plug it into the iPad. Tap Pair when the prompt appears. The Pencil charges while connected.

For iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16), use the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter: remove the cap, connect the Pencil to the adapter, then connect the adapter to the iPad with the iPad’s USB-C charge cable. Tap Pair when prompted. The adapter-and-cable route is specific to these iPad models; check compatibility before connecting.
Apple Pencil (2nd generation)
Attach the Pencil to the magnetic connector on the right side of a compatible iPad. Turn on Bluetooth; the Pencil charges while attached.

Apple Pencil (USB-C)
- Slide open the end of the Pencil to expose its USB-C port.
- Connect the Pencil to the iPad using a USB-C charge cable.
- Tap Tap to Connect on the iPad.
The Pencil charges while connected. After pairing, you can disconnect it from the cable. Apple says it stays paired until you restart the iPad, turn off Bluetooth, or pair it with another iPad. Check its battery in the Batteries widget or at Settings > Apple Pencil.
Apple Pencil Pro
Attach the Pencil to the magnetic connector on the long side of a compatible iPad. Bluetooth should be on for charging.

If the Apple Pencil will not pair
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance, published January 15, 2026, recommends working through these checks in order:
- Update the iPad to the latest iPadOS version, confirm the Pencil is compatible with that iPad, and charge the Pencil if needed.
- Connect it using the method for its model. For a first-generation Pencil with iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16), use the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter and a USB-C charge cable.
- Leave the Pencil connected and restart the iPad, then try pairing again.
- Check that Bluetooth is on at Settings > Bluetooth.
- If Apple Pencil appears under My Devices, tap its information button and choose Forget this Device.
- Reconnect the Pencil and tap Pair when prompted. If the prompt does not appear, leave it connected for one minute to charge, then reconnect and wait for the prompt.
- For Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (2nd generation), remove the iPad case or cover and try again.
If the Pair button still does not appear after these steps, Apple says service may be needed. See Apple’s troubleshooting instructions.

Check the Pencil’s charge
Use the Batteries widget or open Settings > Apple Pencil to check battery status. The Pencil charges while connected by cable; second-generation and Pro models charge while attached to their compatible iPad’s magnetic connector, with Bluetooth enabled.
