To pair AirPods Pro, open the case near an iPhone or iPad and follow the setup animation, or select them from your device’s Bluetooth settings. The pairing control differs by generation: AirPods Pro 1 and 2 use the setup button on the back of the case; AirPods Pro 3 uses a double tap on the front. In either case, wait for the status light to flash white.
Before you start: put AirPods Pro in pairing mode
Keep both earbuds in the charging case and open its lid. Use the case control for your generation, then wait for the status light to flash white. Apple’s pairing guide and non-Apple device guide give these generation-specific steps:
- AirPods Pro 1 or AirPods Pro 2: Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about five seconds, or until the status light flashes white.
- AirPods Pro 3: Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
If you are unsure which model you have, identify it before choosing a pairing step; Apple links to its identification guidance from its pairing instructions.
Pair AirPods Pro with an iPhone or iPad
- On the iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- With both AirPods Pro in the open case, hold it near the device.
- When the setup animation appears, follow the on-screen instructions to finish pairing.
If the animation does not appear, put the AirPods Pro in pairing mode using the correct case control above. Then go to Settings > Bluetooth and select the AirPods when they appear in the device list. Keep the iPhone or iPad’s software current. If you want access to Find My features, Apple says the device should have Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity during pairing. Pair AirPods Pro with a Mac
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Put both AirPods Pro in the open case and activate pairing mode for their generation. Wait for the status light to flash white.
- When the AirPods appear in the nearby Bluetooth devices, select them and click Connect.
If you have already set them up with an iPhone and your Mac is signed in to the same Apple Account, they should connect automatically. If needed, choose the AirPods from the Mac’s sound controls. Apple describes these options in its Apple device pairing guide.
Pair AirPods Pro with an Android phone
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on. On some Android phones, the path is Settings > Connections > Bluetooth; menu names vary by manufacturer.
- With the AirPods Pro in the open case, use the correct generation’s pairing control and wait for the status light to flash white.
- Choose the AirPods Pro from the available Bluetooth-device list.
On Android, AirPods Pro work as a Bluetooth headset for listening and calls, but Siri is unavailable. Apple’s non-Apple device instructions describe the pairing process.

If AirPods Pro will not connect
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac’s operating system.
- Put both earbuds in the case and check that each is charging.
- Confirm Bluetooth is on, then retry pairing.
- If the AirPods do not appear, use the manual Bluetooth method for your device and the correct generation-specific pairing control.
- If the AirPods connect but sound still comes from the device speakers, select the AirPods as the audio output.

After setup with one Apple device, AirPods can connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This automatic connection behavior applies to Apple devices; Android pairing is done through that phone’s Bluetooth settings.
