Pair a replacement remote with a set-up Google TV Streamer
- Turn on the Google TV Streamer and switch your TV to the HDMI input showing its screen.
- Press and hold the physical button on the back of the streamer for 5–10 seconds to start Pairing Mode.
- Insert two AAA batteries into the replacement Google TV Streamer Voice Remote.
- Wait for the remote to pair. Google says it pairs automatically in most cases.
- If it does not pair, follow any instructions displayed on the TV. If prompted to pair manually, hold Back and Home on the remote for 3 seconds.
These are Google’s replacement-remote instructions for an already-set-up Google TV Streamer. They also cover Chromecast with Google TV, but the steps above are for Google TV Streamer. The guide documents the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote; it does not establish that every third-party remote is compatible. (Google Support)
How replacement pairing differs from first-time setup
If you are setting up the streamer for the first time, the screen may display “Start pairing.” In that setup flow, hold Back and Home until the remote’s light starts to pulse. That is different from pairing a replacement remote with a streamer that is already set up, where you first press the button on the back of the streamer to start Pairing Mode. (Google Support)
If the remote pairs but TV buttons do not work
Pairing connects the remote to the streamer. It does not automatically configure the remote’s power, volume, or input buttons for your TV, receiver, or soundbar. To set up those controls, open Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons on the streamer. Whether those buttons can control a particular TV or other device varies; Google notes that some models do not support power or input control through the remote. (Google Support)

Use a phone as a temporary remote
If you need to navigate the streamer while sorting out the physical remote, Google documents the Google Home app and Google TV app as phone-remote options. Each app has its own connection and device requirements, so availability depends on your setup. (Google Support)
