Your Intel Mac also needs the right cable and ports for the wired setup route.
Identify your Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad
Check the accessory for a charging port. A rechargeable model with a Lightning or USB-C port can use Apple’s cable-based pairing method. An earlier battery-powered model without a Lightning port uses Bluetooth discovery instead. The setup steps depend on the accessory generation, not simply on whether the Mac has an Intel processor.
Apple’s current setup instructions cover USB-C, USB-C-to-Lightning, and Lightning-to-USB cables for rechargeable devices. The correct cable depends on the accessory’s port and the ports on your Mac; an adapter may be necessary. There is no single cable that fits every Mac and accessory combination. Apple’s setup instructions list cable options.
Pair a rechargeable model with a cable
- Choose a cable that connects the accessory’s charging port to a port on the Mac. Use an adapter if the Mac’s ports require one.
- Connect the accessory to the Mac with the cable.
- Turn on the Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad and check that green is visible at the switch.
- Wait for the USB connection to pair the accessory automatically.
- Open Bluetooth in System Settings or System Preferences and check that the device appears.
- Disconnect the cable to use the accessory wirelessly.
Apple states that Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad work wirelessly via Bluetooth when turned on and paired with a Mac. The wording and location of Bluetooth controls can vary by macOS version: look for Bluetooth in System Settings or System Preferences. Apple’s setup page describes this pairing route.

Pair an earlier model without Lightning
These models need to be discoverable in Bluetooth settings. You will need another working mouse or trackpad to navigate setup, unless you are using a Mac laptop whose built-in trackpad is available.
- Turn on the Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. Look for a blinking LED, which indicates that the device is discoverable.
- On the Mac, open Bluetooth in System Settings or System Preferences.
- Select Connect when the device appears in the list.
- If prompted, enter the passcode shown or requested by the Mac.
For this setup flow, Apple instructs users to use a wired or wireless pointing device already connected to the Mac. A laptop’s built-in trackpad can serve as that control. Apple’s instructions for earlier wireless input devices describe the discovery steps; its general Bluetooth guidance also requires the accessory to be on and discoverable.

Troubleshoot pairing problems
No LED appears
For an earlier model, check or replace its batteries. Apple identifies a missing LED as a reason to check the battery supply. Apple’s setup instructions cover this check.
The LED lights briefly but does not blink
The accessory may still be connected to a nearby Mac. On that Mac, remove or forget the device in Bluetooth settings. Then turn the accessory off and on again so it can become discoverable. Apple describes this behavior in its earlier-device setup guidance.

The device appears but is not connected
Open Bluetooth settings and select Connect beside the accessory. Before trying again, make sure the device is turned on and discoverable. Apple’s Bluetooth instructions describe these connection requirements.
The cable will not connect
Check the connector at both ends against the accessory and Mac ports. You may need a different cable or an adapter. Apple lists cable types for rechargeable generations but does not specify one universal cable for all older Macs and accessories. Check its listed cable options before choosing one.

The Magic Mouse does not work while charging
Apple says Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging. Magic Trackpad and Magic Keyboard can be used while charging. Apple’s setup instructions distinguish these behaviors.

What to check if pairing still fails
- Confirm whether the accessory is rechargeable or an earlier battery-powered model; follow the matching setup route above.
- For the cable route, confirm that the cable and any adapter match the actual ports on both devices.
- For Bluetooth discovery, confirm the accessory is on and its LED is blinking. If it remains linked to a nearby Mac, forget it there and restart the accessory.
- Apple’s instructions do not provide a compatibility matrix for every Intel Mac model, Bluetooth hardware revision, accessory generation, or macOS release. Do not assume that every older Intel Mac can pair with every Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad; check model-specific Apple support information for the Mac in question.
