Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To overclock a GPU for mining, identify the exact card, record its stock performance and temperatures, then adjust one control at a time in small increments while checking stability. There is no universal safe clock offset: results depend on the GPU, mining algorithm, software, cooling, and power limits. Judge a setting by stable accepted work per watt—not peak displayed hashrate.
Before you tune: confirm what you can mine
Ethereum Mainnet no longer supports mining. Ethereum switched off proof of work and is secured by validators using proof of stake; its former mining algorithm was Ethash. See the Ethereum proof-of-stake documentation and the Ethereum Foundation’s Mainnet Merge announcement. This applies to Ethereum Mainnet, not every proof-of-work network. Which other network, algorithm, and mining client are suitable for a particular card requires current compatibility research; do not rely on an old Ethereum mining guide or its tuning table.
Before changing clocks, verify that your chosen mining software supports your exact GPU and intended algorithm. The sources cited here do not establish current software compatibility, the best coin for a given card, or whether mining will cover electricity costs.
Record a stock baseline first
Run the intended workload at stock settings long enough to observe whether it operates consistently. Record the mining software’s reported output and accepted work, power draw, and GPU and memory temperatures if the card exposes those sensors. This gives you a comparison point for each adjustment; a short-lived hashrate peak is not proof that a setting is stable or efficient.

Temperature and power readings depend on what the specific GPU exposes. NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi reference describes device-dependent power limits, power readings, and temperature information. Do not assume every card reports the same sensors or supports the same controls.
Choose controls and tools for your exact card
Clock, power, voltage, and cooling controls interact, but they do not do the same thing. Available controls and ranges depend on the card and its software. Use a supported vendor tool and stay within the individual GPU’s documented limits.

| Control or tool | What it affects | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Core clock | GPU processing frequency and potentially workload output. | Effect depends on the mining algorithm. More clock can increase power, heat, or instability; do not assume a higher setting improves efficiency. |
| Memory clock | VRAM frequency, which can matter for memory-intensive workloads. | Monitor memory temperatures where available. A high displayed hashrate is not useful if accepted work falls or the card becomes unstable. |
| Power limit | The card’s permitted power draw, where the GPU and software expose this control. | A lower limit may reduce heat and consumption but can also reduce output. Compare measured results rather than assuming a particular direction is best. |
| Voltage | Electrical conditions for the GPU, when adjustable. | Changing voltage can affect heat, power, and stability. No universal voltage or safe offset is established here. |
| Fan behavior | Cooling response and fan speed. | More cooling may help manage temperature but increases fan activity. Follow the card’s limits and monitor its behavior. |
| AMD Radeon tuning | AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition provides GPU and memory tuning, power tuning, fan controls, and saved profiles for supported GPUs. | Feature availability depends on the GPU. See AMD’s Adrenalin product page and overclocking and tuning guidance. |
| NVIDIA device management | nvidia-smi provides supported device-management controls and telemetry, including power limits, power draw, and temperature fields. | It is not a universal graphical overclocking application. Supported controls and readings vary by device; consult the nvidia-smi reference. |
These are different vendor ecosystems, not a ranking. Compare the controls, temperature visibility, profile behavior, operating-system support, and stability available for your exact card under the intended mining workload. The documentation does not establish that one is universally better for mining.
Overclock in small steps and test each change
- Identify the card and vendor. Confirm the exact GPU model, its supported controls, and the limits specified for that card. Do not copy another model’s offsets.
- Save or note the stock configuration. Record baseline output, accepted work, power draw, and available GPU and memory temperatures. Make sure you know how to restore the default settings.
- Pick one control to adjust. Change only the core clock, memory clock, power limit, voltage, or fan behavior—not several at once. This makes it possible to tell which change affected the result.
- Use a small increment. AMD advises that “When manually overclocking, it is a best practice to overclock in small increments and then test for stability after each adjustment.” Apply that incremental approach rather than jumping to a maximum or copying a preset.
- Run the intended workload and inspect results. Check for errors, crashes, thermal concerns, and changes in accepted work, power draw, and available temperatures. A stable result should hold under the mining workload you actually plan to run.
- Keep, revert, or stop. Keep a change only if it remains stable and improves the outcome you care about. Revert the last change if errors, crashes, concerning temperatures, or lower effective accepted output appear. Stop tuning if the card cannot operate within its documented limits.
- Repeat one adjustment at a time. Once a change is checked, you can test another control using the same baseline and observations. Save a known-stable profile if your supported tool offers profiles.
Compare efficiency, not just peak hashrate
Use stable accepted work per watt as the practical comparison: note accepted output and power draw over the same workload interval, then compare that result with the stock baseline. Rejected or stale work can make a high displayed hashrate misleading. If you are assessing operating cost, use your measured electricity rate and actual power consumption; no current profitability figure or generally best configuration is established here.

There is no universal temperature target or “safe” clock offset supported by the cited manufacturer guidance. Card design, cooling, sensors, workload, and ambient conditions differ. Treat the manufacturer’s limits and the individual card’s behavior as controlling, and stop or revert rather than pushing past a limit to chase a number.

AMD’s support guidance states: “AMD PRODUCT WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER DAMAGES CAUSED BY OVERCLOCKING, EVEN WHEN OVERCLOCKING IS ENABLED VIA AMD HARDWARE AND/OR SOFTWARE.” This is AMD’s stated warranty language; it should not be generalized to other manufacturers or jurisdictions. Check the warranty terms that apply to your own card before tuning.
