Use Snagit’s Library to find and group captures: search for a name or available metadata, add tags for recurring subjects or projects, then filter and sort with the options in your version. Library features and file-handling details vary by release, so check the help for your installed version before following older storage or moving instructions.
Organize captures in Snagit’s Library
Open Snagit Editor and go to the Library. TechSmith presents it as the place to find and organize captures. Its current product page describes a searchable library that can find text inside screenshots, but that is vendor feature language; confirm that the capability is available in your Snagit version.
TechSmith’s Snagit Help (2022) documents Library categories and sorting options. Labels and available controls may differ in later or other editions.
1. Search for a capture
Use the Library search field when you know a capture’s name or a metadata term. Search can be quicker than browsing folders, particularly when you have a large collection. Search behavior and searchable fields depend on the version; do not assume text recognition or identical metadata search in every release.

2. Add tags to related captures
Assign meaningful tags for recurring subjects, projects, or purposes—for example, a project name or “setup guide.” Tags let you bring related captures together without needing to keep them in one folder. The 2022 help documents manually assigned tags as a Library category.
3. Filter by the available categories
Use Library filters to narrow the results. The 2022 help lists file type, date, applications, websites, and tags. TechSmith’s current Snagit features page describes filtering and sorting by date, application, or webpage. The mismatch reflects documentation from different points in the product line; use the categories shown in your installed version.

4. Sort the results
The 2022 help lists modified date, creation date, name, and size as sort fields. Choose the one that suits the task: name for an alphabetical scan, date to find recent work, or size when looking for larger files. These are version-specific documented options, not a guarantee that every release shows the same controls.
Move or back up captures carefully
Moving files can affect metadata
An older Snagit 10 Getting Started Guide warns that moving media files with keywords or flags through Windows Explorer or another external method can lose those details, and recommends managing them through Editor’s folder workflow. Because this guidance is old, confirm the current behavior and menu labels in your version before moving a large collection.

Back up the Library using version-specific guidance
TechSmith’s backup and restore support article provides instructions for the Library and notes that some saved files need separate handling. Follow the instructions for your version rather than assuming the Library backup includes every capture. A separate drive is one possible backup destination, not a requirement for organizing captures.
Where Snagit captures are stored
Storage guidance must be version-qualified. TechSmith’s support explanation for saved and unsaved captures in Snagit 2021 and earlier says unsaved captures are .SNAG files in the Datastore, while saved captures use the selected file format and location. Do not apply that description automatically to newer Snagit versions.

Version-specific tag behavior
TechSmith’s Snagit Mac 2025 version history says that in that release line, duplicate tags differing only by capitalization are consolidated into one tag. This is specific to Snagit Mac 2025 and should not be generalized to other editions or versions.
