To improve user acquisition with Google Display & Video 360 (DV360), start with a clearly defined conversion, build creative variants that fit the placements and audiences you plan to use, verify tracking and landing pages before launch, then evaluate results against that conversion goal. Google’s guidance covers platform features, asset specifications and recommended workflows; it does not establish that any creative format or strategy will produce a particular performance lift.

Build the campaign around a measurable acquisition action

Define what counts as a valuable action before choosing creatives or bidding settings. A conversion might be a purchase, a call or another business outcome after an ad interaction. Make sure the action is tracked consistently across the devices and campaign activity that matter to your business.

DV360 brings campaign management, audience data, creative work, inventory purchasing and optimization together. Its five modules are Campaigns, Audiences, Creatives, Inventory and Insights. Creative teams can use Ad Canvas to preview how assets appear, Format Gallery to explore available formats, and reporting features to examine campaign metrics. Treat those tools as part of a workflow: connect the audience, placement and creative plan to the conversion you intend to measure.

Google says campaign goals and KPIs inform its optimization recommendations, automatic budget allocation and visualizations against goals. A goal that does not match the business outcome can make those recommendations less useful. Google’s guidance puts it plainly: “Goals work best when targets are realistic and closely reflect your objectives.”

Plan creative variants that can answer a question

Google’s optimized-creative guidance allows compatible assets to be mixed and matched. Use variants to test meaningfully different messages, benefits or propositions rather than making changes so small that a result is hard to interpret. A creative test is useful only when you can connect its outcome to a defined objective and understand the audience and media context in which it ran.

Work within the documented text limits

  • Short headlines: one to five, up to 30 characters each.
  • Long headline: one, up to 90 characters.
  • Body text: one to five blocks, up to 90 characters each.
  • Call to action: up to 15 characters.

The same guidance specifies advertiser-name, logo, image and URL requirements. It calls for at least one square image, one rectangular image and one square logo. Confirm the full current requirements for the format and placement you select; the limits above should not be treated as a complete specification for every creative type.

Match the format to the message and destination

For HTML5, DV360 supports display and rich-media creatives, including responsive formats, click tags and interaction metrics. Rich media can include animations, galleries, games or embedded video; its metrics can record clicks, exits and interactions. Choose a format that suits the message, and verify that each click tag resolves to the intended landing page.

For video, check the requirements for the actual line item and inventory rather than assuming one specification covers every placement. Google lists supported formats and dimensions, specifies H.264 video, and provides guidance on frame rate, bitrate, duration, audio and companion banners. These are technical requirements and recommendations, not evidence that one video treatment will outperform another for a particular campaign.

Keep the test interpretable: compare variants against the same intended outcome and account for differences in audience, inventory, attribution and landing-page experience. A result from one context does not, by itself, identify a universally winning message.

Separate acquisition work by funnel stage

Google’s strategy guidance describes three insertion-order stages. They are a planning framework, not a required structure for every advertiser. Choose the arrangement that fits your audience, available inventory, conversion objective and measurement capabilities.

Stage Role in the plan Planning consideration
Prospecting Use broad targeting to discover receptive users. Preserve enough audience breadth to find eligible inventory and learn which messages merit further testing.
Behavioral targeting Refine audiences and find similar users. Check that the signals used to define or refine audiences are relevant to the acquisition action.
Remarketing Reach people who previously visited advertiser pages, using pixels or Floodlight where applicable. Set frequency controls and ensure the audience and conversion measurement remain appropriate to the campaign.

Set frequency caps and consider automatic budget allocation or flexible budgets while line items are new and performance information is still developing. Google also cautions that overly restrictive targeting can leave YouTube line items without enough matching inventory. If a line item cannot spend or reach enough eligible users, review its targeting breadth and inventory availability before assuming the creative is the cause.

Choose bidding and budgets to match the objective

Custom bidding rules can optimize toward weighted conversions, clicks, brand awareness or advertiser-defined metrics. Select a metric that represents the acquisition outcome you actually value, and verify that its underlying signals are tracked consistently. A click-focused metric, for example, is not interchangeable with a conversion objective.

Google’s planning documentation describes average CPA as the cost of formats contributing to conversions divided by planned conversions. It also describes historical CPA based on data from the past 70 days. These are planning estimates based on the platform’s described method, not guaranteed costs or universal industry benchmarks. Google notes that actual costs vary with ad quality, conversion type and industry.

Check approval, click paths and landing pages before launch

Creative approval depends on more than the uploaded asset. Google advises uploading and activating creatives, assigning them to active or pre-flight line items early, and targeting the exchanges intended for purchase. Make sure the creative is viewable for review and its declared dimensions match the asset. When using Campaign Manager 360 or another third-party ad server, Google recommends a working backup creative for each placement throughout the flight.

Review the destination as carefully as the ad. Google’s approval guidance says a landing page should match the advertised product or service, allow crawling by Googlebot and AdsBot-Google, return a successful response to AdsBot-Google, include text and avoid errors. Redirect behavior can also contribute to review delays or rejection. Google’s instruction is to “Allow crawling by both Googlebot and Google Adsbot.”

Pre-launch quality check

  • Confirm the creative is active and assigned to the intended line item, and that its declared dimensions match.
  • Check that the destination is correct and that redirects and HTML5 click tags resolve as intended.
  • Load the landing page and confirm it has relevant text, returns successfully to AdsBot-Google and is crawlable by both named crawlers.
  • Activate backup ads for placements using a third-party ad server where required by the plan.
  • Verify that the campaign goal, KPI and conversion tracking reflect the intended business outcome.

Measure conversions with the right qualifications

Reported conversion counts can include modeled conversions. Google describes modeled conversions as estimates of online conversions that cannot be directly observed, for example because of privacy or technical limitations. Models use patterns between observed and unobserved conversions to estimate reporting and support optimization; they are aggregate estimates, not a way to recover an individual’s identity. Google says it does not permit fingerprinting or other attempts to identify individuals.

For Demand Gen line items, Google recommends audience-first creative, A/B experimentation, conversion tracking and configuring the Google tag. Its help page states that “Demand Gen lets you reach up to 3 billion active monthly users.” That is a Google-published platform reach statement, not an independently verified audience measurement, a forecast for a particular advertiser or a guarantee of reach in any specific geography. Demand Gen guidance should also be understood in that product context rather than treated as proof of a particular DV360 campaign result.

After launch, compare results with the KPI selected at setup and interpret them in the context of audience, inventory, attribution and landing-page experience. Google’s documentation describes platform capabilities and recommended practices; it does not provide an independent controlled statistic showing that a particular creative strategy increases acquisition.
