To optimize images in WordPress, start with dimensions close to the size they will appear, then choose an appropriate format and compression level. WordPress generates registered image sizes when you upload media; WebP support can reduce file sizes, while plugins can add bulk conversion, resizing controls, or other formats. Test the actual page and images on your host before treating a conversion as complete.
1. Start with image dimensions that fit the page
Do not upload a source image that is far larger than its largest intended display size unless you need the extra resolution for a specific use. Smaller, appropriately sized files generally require less data to transfer. WordPress creates registered sub-sizes during upload, and themes can register additional sizes, so the variants available on a site depend on its configuration.
WordPress usually generates those sub-sizes in the original image format. Its Theme Handbook explains that WordPress 5.8 introduced WebP support and describes how image sizes are generated: WordPress Theme Handbook: Images.
Choose a sensible maximum size
Consider the largest place the image will appear in your theme, including any full-width layout or high-density display you support. Avoid imposing one maximum dimension on every site without checking its layout: an image used as a large hero may need more pixels than a small thumbnail. If a plugin resizes uploads, review its maximum-dimension setting and confirm that it will not shrink images needed elsewhere.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check generated variants
After changing image-size settings or a theme, newly uploaded files may have different variants from older media. Existing files might require regeneration or reprocessing, depending on the method you use. Check a representative image’s available sizes and the rendered page rather than assuming every past upload has been updated.
2. Decide whether WordPress’s WebP behavior is enough
WordPress documents WebP support, and the WordPress Performance team described generating WebP versions of uploaded JPEGs and their sub-sizes while retaining the originals when the server supports the required capability. The team reported that WordPress-generated WebP images were almost always smaller than JPEGs, with an average reduction of about 30% at the same visual quality. That figure is the team’s reported average in its March 28, 2022 post, not a guarantee for a particular image, encoder, server, or site: “Enabling WebP by default,” Make WordPress Core.
Native behavior may be sufficient if your host supports the required image processing and your need is simply WebP versions of new uploads. A plugin may be useful if you also need controls for compression or maximum dimensions, conversion to AVIF, or bulk processing of an existing media library.

3. Compare optimization approaches before converting
These options have different workflows and requirements; the feature descriptions below are not independent quality or speed rankings. Confirm current plugin details in the directory listings before installing, since plugin features can change.

Questions to settle before choosing
- Formats: Check support for the formats you actually use, such as JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF. If you depend on animation or GIF files, verify how they are handled.
- Workflow: Confirm whether the tool processes new uploads, individual existing files, and/or the library in bulk.
- Resizing: Find out whether oversized images are resized, what maximum dimensions apply, and whether the original is retained.
- Compression: Look for lossy and lossless choices and a way to review visual output. No single quality setting is best for every image.
- Processing location: Determine whether optimization happens on your server or sends files to an external service; account for that in your privacy and operational decisions.
- Compatibility: Verify the required GD or Imagick capabilities and any web-server rules needed to deliver converted files.
4. Apply changes and verify the result
- Record a baseline. Pick a representative page with several images. Note how it looks and which image URLs and formats it currently serves.
- Confirm the host capabilities. Check with your hosting provider or site administrator that the required GD or Imagick format support is available. For a plugin, also check any stated server or rewrite requirements.
- Choose a test image or small batch. Use images representative of your actual content, including a photograph and any graphics where fine detail or transparency matters.
- Configure dimensions and compression. Set a maximum size that fits the site’s layout. Compare lossy or lossless options visually; do not assume a single quality value suits every image.
- Process files. Run the chosen upload, individual-file, or bulk workflow. If you are converting an established library, make sure the tool explicitly supports that operation.
- Inspect images at their rendered size. Check detail, artifacts, color, transparency, and cropping in the page—not just a zoomed-in original or a file-size number.
- Check delivery on the live site. Confirm the page loads the intended format and that images still appear for visitors. Test representative pages after enabling rewrite or delivery rules.
5. Troubleshoot common problems
Conversion fails or WebP is unavailable
The server may lack the required image-processing capability or the relevant format support. Check the plugin’s requirements and ask the host whether GD or Imagick supports the format you need. Do not assume that installing a plugin alone adds server-level support.
Converted files exist but visitors still get the old format
File generation and file delivery are separate steps. Check the plugin’s delivery and rewrite configuration and confirm that the page is serving the converted image. If the site uses a combined Nginx/Apache setup, the Images to WebP listing warns that host-specific rewrite handling may be needed. Consult your host before changing server rules.

Some images look worse after optimization
Lossy compression can trade visual detail for smaller files. Compare the result at the size visitors will see, then adjust the compression choice or retain a less-compressed version for images where artifacts are noticeable. The cited sources do not establish a universal quality setting.
Older media remains unconverted
Automatic upload processing may apply only to new files. Check whether your selected tool supports individual or bulk processing of existing media and run that workflow if needed. Test a small selection first and confirm the generated files and rendered pages.
Images become too small or crop unexpectedly
Review the maximum-dimension setting and the image sizes registered by your theme. A resizing limit suitable for a thumbnail may be too restrictive for a wide page image. Recheck the largest display use before applying a bulk resize.

6. Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Image optimization can reduce the bytes an image needs, but the result varies with the source image, format, compression choice, and delivery setup. The WordPress Performance team’s approximately 30% average WebP reduction was reported in 2022 for its generated WebP images compared with JPEG at the same visual quality; it is not a promised page-speed improvement for your site. The plugin listings describe features, not independently verified speed gains.
Local processing avoids sending image files to a third-party optimization service, while a service-based workflow may shift processing away from your server. Elementor’s listing specifically says its optimization uses an Elementor-operated third-party service. Weigh that distinction alongside compatibility, bulk-processing needs, and the ability to review output. Test page rendering after every change that affects how converted files are served.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does WordPress create WebP files for every image by default?
No universal behavior is established for every WordPress installation: WebP generation depends on the relevant WordPress behavior and server image-processing support. Check the actual files and delivery on your host.
Should I use lossy or lossless compression?
Choose by inspecting the image at its intended display size. Photographs and graphics can tolerate different trade-offs, so there is no single best setting for every site.
