Constrained decoding can make a small language model (SLM) return data that follows a JSON schema or grammar, but it cannot guarantee that the values are right or that an automation will perform the intended action. Optimize for three separate outcomes—valid structure, correct meaning, and successful execution—and benchmark the exact model, schema, decoder, and workflow you plan to deploy.
What constrained decoding does—and what it does not
Constrained decoding limits which tokens a model may emit as it generates a response. The constraint can be a formal specification, such as a JSON Schema or grammar, so the resulting text conforms to that specification. OpenAI describes its Structured Outputs implementation as preprocessing a schema into a context-free grammar, then checking which next tokens are permissible as generation proceeds. Its implementation may incur extra latency the first time a schema is used; cached grammar state can reduce the cost on subsequent requests.
That mechanism enforces a format, not a correct decision. A JSON object can satisfy every required field and type while giving the wrong date, choosing the wrong customer, or asking a tool to take the wrong action. Treat these as separate evaluation targets:
- Structural validity: Does the output parse and pass the exact schema or grammar validator?
- Semantic correctness: Are the extracted values, classification, or decision right for the input?
- Executable accuracy: When the output triggers a tool or workflow, does it perform the intended operation?
For automation, a valid payload is an interface contract. It is not proof that the model understood the request.

What small-model results show
Reported results demonstrate why validity and correctness should not be collapsed into one score. The figures below are study-specific, not predictions for every SLM or deployment.
| Study and setup | Reported result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Jaideep Ray, May 2026 arXiv preprint; 15,000 generations using Qwen2.5-0.5B, Qwen2.5-1.5B, and SmolLM2-1.7B | Hard answer-only schema decoding raised schema validity from 61.5% to 100.0%, while answer accuracy fell from 19.7% to 11.0%. Wrong-but-valid-schema outputs rose from 49.5% to 88.9%. | In this setup, perfect structural compliance coincided with worse answer accuracy and many more incorrect outputs that nevertheless passed the schema. |
| Ray, deterministic calendar tool-call task | Prompt-only JSON had 91.5% executable accuracy; hard tool-call schema decoding had 48.0%. Both modes had 100.0% schema validity. | A schema-valid tool call can still fail to carry out the intended operation. |
| Akash Chavan, September 2026 arXiv preprint; reported five-model table | Native schema validity of 78.6%–92.9% reached 100% under constrained decoding. | The work also distinguishes instruction-semantic errors from structural errors; improving one does not establish improvement in the other. |
| StructureBench, IJCAI 2026; more than 11 on-device language and vision-language models spanning 0.5B–8B parameters | Its abstract reports consistent syntactic validity under enforcement, while semantic accuracy did not reliably improve and could decline for smaller models or complex grammars. | Results depend on the model, task, and grammar difficulty. |
| Draft-Conditioned Constrained Decoding (DCCD), Proceedings of Machine Learning Research, 2026 | The paper reports gains of up to 24 percentage points in strict structured accuracy on its benchmarks, including an example from 15.2% to 39.0% on GSM8K with a 1B model. | This is evidence for that draft-conditioned method on the paper’s structured-reasoning benchmarks, not a general deployment expectation. |
Taken together, these studies support testing the constraint as part of a system rather than assuming it will improve every kind of reliability. The same model may behave differently with a different schema, task distribution, decoder, or tool interface.

Choose an output strategy for the actual workflow
There is no universally best option in the cited work. Compare the approaches against your required contract and task rather than selecting by format compliance alone.
| Approach | What it does | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt-only structured output | Ask the model to follow a format in its instructions, without hard token restrictions. | Measure parse and schema validity as well as correctness. It may be a useful baseline, but do not assume it will reliably honor the format. |
| Hard constrained decoding | Restrict generation to tokens allowed by a schema or grammar. | Check whether the implementation supports the schema constructs your task needs, and score semantic and executable outcomes independently of validity. |
| Draft first, constrain later | Allow a draft or intermediate answer, then use a constrained procedure to package the output. | Where available, compare its accuracy and runtime on your examples. DCCD is a reported research approach with benchmark-specific results, not a guaranteed improvement. |
Keep the schema no narrower than the real task contract requires. It should allow every valid result, including legitimate alternatives such as an explicit no-action outcome when the input does not justify acting. A constraint that excludes a correct answer can force a formally valid but semantically wrong one.

Benchmark the full decision and action path
A useful comparison holds the model and examples constant while changing the output strategy. Use a fixed test set that reflects the automation’s real inputs; include ordinary requests and cases likely to expose boundary failures.
- Write down the downstream contract. Specify required fields, types, allowed values, and which actions are permitted. Define how the workflow should handle missing information and requests that should trigger no action.
- Build a representative evaluation set. Include ambiguous inputs, values near schema boundaries, incomplete requests, and cases where the safe or correct result is to abstain or do nothing. Label the correct values and intended action for each example.
- Run paired conditions. Compare prompt-only output, hard constrained output, and a delayed-packaging or draft-conditioned option if your stack supports one. Keep the model version, decoding framework, schema, task examples, and execution environment fixed across conditions.
- Score each outcome separately. Record schema validity, semantic answer accuracy, and end-to-end executable accuracy. For schema-valid outputs, also count those with incorrect values or intent—the wrong-valid-schema rate.
- Measure deployment cost. On the target hardware, record first-use schema setup latency, steady-state latency, and throughput. Test the exact schema and decoder; grammar support and tokenization behavior can affect both compatibility and performance.
- Repeat after changes. Re-run the evaluation when the model, schema, decoding framework, prompt, or task distribution changes. A result for one combination does not establish reliability for another.
For tool use, evaluate whether the intended tool was selected and whether its arguments would produce the right operation. Counting a parse or a schema-valid call as a successful tool action overstates reliability.

Account for grammar coverage and runtime
Constraint engines differ in the formal languages and schema features they support, their token handling, and their integration with model-serving stacks. Google Research’s 2024 work describes automata-based constraints for regular languages and extensions to deterministic context-free languages; it also highlights tokenization as a challenge because model tokens can be ambiguous or misaligned with grammar rules. Do not assume one implementation’s coverage or performance applies to another.
- Coverage: Verify that the decoder supports the schema constructs, nesting, and recursion your interface requires. Test the actual schema rather than a simpler substitute.
- Latency: Separate first-use setup from steady-state generation. In OpenAI’s documented implementation, grammar preprocessing can add latency for a schema’s first use, with cached state reducing later costs.
- Integration: Check that the serving stack exposes the generation controls the decoder needs, and measure resource use on the hardware intended for deployment.
- Reproducibility: Record model version, decoder and framework versions, schema, decoding settings, hardware, and test set with each result.
When constraints are worth using
Hard constraints are most directly useful when downstream software needs a strict interface and invalid formatting would otherwise break a workflow. Use them when the exact schema is supported and evaluation shows that the constrained system meets the required semantic and execution thresholds—not merely because its outputs parse.

If the constrained version improves validity but harms answer or tool accuracy, reconsider the schema’s restrictions and the point at which formatting is enforced. Test a less restrictive contract or a draft-then-package approach if one is available. Keep a safe path for uncertain or incomplete requests; a perfectly formatted call is not a safe substitute for an appropriate decision.
The practical optimization target is not maximum constraint. It is the least restrictive supported output contract that reliably serves the workflow, validated with separate measurements for structure, meaning, action, and runtime.
