To optimize a PC for a large open-world game, first identify whether the problem is low frame rate, uneven frame pacing, shader stutter, slow loading, or world-data streaming. Then change one relevant setting at a time and compare the same repeatable scene. There is no universal preset: a change that helps a GPU-limited PC may do little for a CPU-limited one.
Start by identifying what is slowing the game
Before changing settings, note the game, resolution, graphics preset, and a location or activity you can repeat. Compare that same situation after each adjustment, rather than relying on a different scene or a general impression.
- Low average frame rate: The CPU, GPU, or available memory may be limiting performance.
- Uneven frame pacing or brief freezes: Shader compilation or another title-specific issue may be involved.
- Long loading times: Storage speed and the game’s data-loading path may matter.
- Late-arriving textures or world details: Investigate memory and data streaming as well as storage.
These symptoms can overlap. Microsoft’s Windows Gaming and Graphics Technologies Developer Relations group observes that “The vast majority of games are limited by CPU performance on systems with high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs).” That is a technical observation about Windows titles, not a diagnosis of every PC or game. Microsoft also notes that high-resolution settings can create a GPU limit, and that limited physical memory can require lower detail settings. Microsoft’s Windows title performance guidance discusses these different bottleneck types.
Match the adjustment to the likely bottleneck
Use the game’s graphics controls as the main place to test performance and image quality. If GPU demand appears to be the problem, try lowering resolution or a demanding visual effect and compare the result. If the game is CPU-limited, lowering resolution may have little effect; a broad reduction in image quality is not guaranteed to address the cause.

Settings such as shadows, view distance, foliage, volumetrics, ray tracing, and upscaling vary in cost by game and hardware. Treat them as individual test variables, not as a universal list of settings to lower first. Change one option, repeat the same gameplay situation, and keep the change only if it improves the symptom without an unacceptable visual tradeoff.
Microsoft’s developer guidance includes a recommendation of approximately 300 or fewer draw-batch submissions per frame for current-generation hardware. That is implementation guidance for developers, not a player setting, consumer benchmark, or frame-rate target.

Check Windows graphics settings
Choose the preferred GPU for the game
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game in the app list. If it is not listed, add it using the available browse option.
- Open the game’s options, select High performance when appropriate on a PC with more than one GPU, and save.
- Restart the game for the preference to take effect.
This per-app preference is relevant when a system has multiple GPUs; it is not a general performance boost for every PC. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 graphics settings instructions.
Consider windowed-game optimization only for eligible games
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games setting applies to eligible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games played in windowed or borderless modes. For compatible games, Microsoft says it transitions presentation from the legacy blt model to flip model to reduce frame latency; it can also enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. It does not apply to every game or fullscreen mode.

Options are configured per app, and you need to restart the game after changing them. Auto HDR enables the optimization automatically; if you want to turn the optimization off, Microsoft says you may need to turn Auto HDR off first. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and variable refresh rate are also eligibility-dependent: they require compatible hardware, drivers, and, for variable refresh rate, a supported display setup. Microsoft’s DirectX graphics settings overview describes these supported features.
Use in-game controls before forcing driver overrides
If a game has its own antialiasing controls, NVIDIA recommends leaving antialiasing application-controlled for applications with built-in controls. NVIDIA also notes that higher anisotropic-filtering values improve image quality while reducing performance. Those details apply to NVIDIA settings; do not assume the same driver controls or behavior across other vendors.

In general, avoid forcing driver-level image-quality overrides while diagnosing a problem. Keep the game’s own settings as the primary variables so you can tell which change affected performance. NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings reference explains its application-controlled antialiasing and anisotropic-filtering options.

Games may compile shaders on the player’s device at launch or during play. Microsoft says this can contribute to longer load times, shader-compilation stutter, and higher power use. Advanced Shader Delivery prepares shader compilation ahead of time and delivers compiled results, but it requires supported Windows, GPU and driver combinations, and storefront integration.

Microsoft’s September 15, 2026 Xbox developer article says Advanced Shader Delivery is currently available for games played in the Xbox app on PC. Do not expect it to work across every title or storefront; package alignment also matters as games are updated. See the Advanced Shader Delivery overview and Microsoft’s Xbox developer article.
For NVIDIA users, the driver shader cache stores compiled shaders so later runs may not need to compile them again. NVIDIA says installing a new driver deletes the cache, so the first run afterward may stutter while shaders are compiled again. Its cache-size setting should allow room for the games you use without exceeding available disk space. This explanation is specific to NVIDIA’s documented driver behavior, not a statement about every graphics driver.
Consider storage for loading and streaming, not guaranteed FPS
An NVMe SSD may help with loading or transitions when a game and PC support the relevant storage path, but it is not a universal frame-rate upgrade. Microsoft’s gaming PC setup guide search listing associates DirectStorage with game data being pulled from an NVMe SSD and faster loading and transitions in large, detailed worlds. That summary does not establish an FPS gain across games.
Before buying or replacing a drive, check the PC’s slot and interface compatibility, physical dimensions where relevant, available capacity, operating-system support, and whether the game takes advantage of the storage feature. The potential benefit depends on compatibility and the game’s implementation; storage changes should not substitute for diagnosing a CPU or GPU limit.
