The quickest option is to open the game or app you want to use and press Windows + G.
Open Xbox Game Bar with Windows + G
- Open the game or app you want to use.
- Press Windows logo key + G.
- Use the widgets on the overlay for recording, screenshots, audio controls, performance information, or Xbox features.
Press Windows + G again to hide the overlay. Microsoft describes this shortcut as opening Game Bar when a game is open, so it may appear to do nothing if you try it from the desktop.
For the official shortcut list, see Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts.
Turn on Game Bar if Windows + G does nothing
Game Bar can be disabled in Windows 11. To enable it:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Go to Gaming > Game Bar.
- Turn on Enable Xbox Game Bar for things like recording game clips, chatting with friends, and receiving game invites.
- Return to the game or app and press Windows + G.
On some Windows 11 builds, you can find the same control by opening Settings and typing xbox in the Find a setting box. Select Enable Xbox Game Bar, then turn on the switch.
Open the Game Bar settings page directly
You can jump straight to the relevant Settings page with the Run dialog:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter ms-settings:gaming-gamebar.
- Press Enter.
Windows opens the Gaming > Game Bar settings page.
Open Game Bar with an Xbox controller
Connect a compatible Xbox controller, then press its Xbox button. If nothing happens, enable the controller option first:
- Open Start > Settings > Gaming > Game Bar.
- Turn on Allow your controller to open Game Bar.
- Press the controller’s Xbox button.
This is separate from the Windows + G shortcut. Disabling controller access does not disable the keyboard shortcut. Conversely, enabling the keyboard shortcut does not necessarily enable the controller button.

Fix common Xbox Game Bar problems
Windows + G has no response
Work through these checks:
- Open the game or app first, then press Windows + G.
- Check Settings > Gaming > Game Bar and enable the Xbox Game Bar option.
- Restart the game and try the shortcut again.
- Open the Microsoft Store, select Library, and install any available Game Bar update.
If Game Bar is missing, damaged, or will not launch after an update, the Microsoft Store is the appropriate place to check for its installation and updates. You do not normally need to install the separate Xbox app just to open Game Bar.

The controller’s Xbox button does nothing
Go to Settings > Gaming > Game Bar and enable Allow your controller to open Game Bar. Also check that Windows recognizes the controller and that it is connected before launching the game.
Game Bar opens when you do not want it to
Turn off Allow your controller to open Game Bar in Settings > Gaming > Game Bar. This prevents the controller’s Xbox button from launching the overlay while leaving Windows + G available.
Game Bar opens, but recording is unavailable
Open the specific game or app you want to record before pressing Windows + Alt + R. Opening the overlay and starting a recording are separate actions. Some protected content, desktop windows, and apps may also restrict capture.
Game Bar is not the Xbox app or Xbox mode
These Windows components have different purposes:
| Component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Game Bar | The Windows overlay used for recording, screenshots, audio, performance widgets, and related controls. |
| Xbox app | A separate app for Xbox accounts, PC Game Pass, games, friends, and other Xbox services. |
| Gaming Services | Windows and Xbox support components used by some games and Xbox features. |
| Xbox mode | A separate newer Windows gaming experience, documented for Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. |
The Xbox app is not a required preliminary step in Microsoft’s current instructions for enabling or opening Game Bar.
