On Windows, select the item and press Shift+F10 to open its context menu. On a Mac, Apple documents a VoiceOver method: move the VoiceOver cursor to the element, press VO-Command-Space, then choose the context-menu action if it is available.
Open a selected item’s context menu in Windows
- Move keyboard focus to the item you want to act on and select it.
- Press Shift+F10. Microsoft lists this shortcut for displaying the context menu of the selected item. In File Explorer, Microsoft’s instructions likewise say to navigate to and select a file before pressing the shortcut. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts and File Explorer navigation guide document the steps.
- Use the arrow keys to move through the menu. Press Enter to activate an option, or Escape to close the menu.
The menu opens for the selected item, not simply wherever the pointer happens to be. If it opens for the wrong item—or does not open—check that the intended item has keyboard focus and is selected.
Open a context-menu action on Mac with VoiceOver
Apple’s documented keyboard route uses VoiceOver. Move the VoiceOver cursor to the interface element, then press VO-Command-Space to open its Actions menu. Choose the context-menu action if that element offers one. Apple describes this in its VoiceOver guide to an item’s alternate action.
VO means the VoiceOver modifier. By default, it is Control-Option pressed together; Caps Lock can also be configured as the modifier. With the default modifier, the full shortcut is Control-Option-Command-Space; with Caps Lock configured, use Caps Lock-Command-Space. See Apple’s VoiceOver keyboard command guide.

Apple also documents VO-Shift-M as Control-click when VoiceOver is enabled. Since Control-click performs a secondary click on Mac, this is another VoiceOver-specific route—not a universal macOS shortcut.

If the shortcut does not work
- On Windows, verify that the item is selected before pressing Shift+F10.
- On Mac, confirm VoiceOver is enabled and the VoiceOver cursor is on the intended element. The Actions menu may not offer a context-menu action for every element.
- Keyboard behavior can vary by application. These documented shortcuts do not guarantee a context menu in every app; consult the application’s help if the relevant option is unavailable.
