To open an HP EliteBook’s sliding camera cover, move it until the webcam lens is visible. If your laptop has no sliding cover, it may use a side privacy switch or a keyboard shutter key instead; the control depends on the exact model and configuration.
Open a sliding camera cover

Look along the top bezel for the webcam lens and a small sliding cover. Do not confuse nearby microphone or sensor openings with the camera lens.

Slide the cover away from the position that blocks the lens until the lens is uncovered. HP’s computer guide says to move the privacy cover in the opposite direction to reveal the lens.
The cover physically blocks or reveals the lens. Opening it does not necessarily resolve a separate software or camera-detection problem.

If there is no sliding cover
HP notebooks can use other privacy controls. The following controls change camera availability rather than sliding a cover over the lens.
Side privacy switch
Check the laptop’s edges and the area beside the camera for a switch and privacy icon. HP says the switch may be on either side of the computer or beside the camera. Move it away from the privacy icon to turn the webcam on.

Keyboard shutter key
Look in the keyboard’s action-key row for a camera or shutter key. Press it to toggle the webcam; if a single press does not work, try pressing Fn with that key. On the shutter-key design documented by HP, an illuminated shutter light means the webcam is off, while the light being off means it is on. See HP’s webcam troubleshooting guide for these controls.

Opening a physical cover only uncovers the lens; it does not establish that the computer has an integrated webcam or that Windows can detect it. Confirm that your exact EliteBook model’s specifications list a webcam. HP’s troubleshooting guidance says a computer without a built-in webcam needs an external USB camera.

Camera options can vary by configuration. For example, HP’s specifications for the EliteBook 640 G10 and EliteBook 640 G11 include camera options with a privacy shutter. These examples do not identify the control on every EliteBook. If you cannot find a cover, switch, or key, look up the guide using your product number. HP’s webcam troubleshooting article specifically names Windows 10; software steps may differ on other Windows versions.
