Choose the workflow that matches where you want the PDF to appear.
Choose how you want Adobe to open the PDF

These settings are separate: changing Edge’s extension preference does not set the computer’s default PDF app, and neither is the same as Acrobat’s option to open PDFs downloaded from Edge.
View PDFs in Edge with Adobe’s extension
- In Edge, open the Extensions menu and choose Manage Extension for Adobe Acrobat, or enter
edge://extensions/in the address bar. - Enable the Adobe Acrobat extension.
- Open the extension’s options, choose Extension Options, turn on the setting that makes Acrobat Edge’s default PDF viewer, and save the preference.
- Open a PDF in Edge. Adobe’s extension supplies Acrobat tools within the browser; it does not launch the separate desktop application.
If the PDF continues to open in Edge’s built-in viewer, check whether another PDF extension is enabled. Adobe warns: “The PDF may not open in Acrobat viewer if multiple PDF extensions are installed.” See Adobe’s instructions for enabling the Acrobat extension in Microsoft Edge (updated August 23, 2024). Edge’s labels may vary by version.
Open PDFs downloaded from Edge in the desktop app on Windows
Adobe documents an automatic open option for PDFs downloaded through Edge on Windows. Download a PDF and, when the Acrobat or Reader prompt appears, choose the option to always open downloaded PDFs in the app and continue.

To turn this behavior off later, open Acrobat or Reader on the desktop, press Ctrl+K, select General, clear Always open PDFs downloaded from the web, and confirm. This preference applies to downloaded PDFs; it does not change which viewer handles PDFs displayed inside Edge or which app opens local PDFs. Make Acrobat or Reader the default for local PDF files
Use this option when you want PDFs opened from your computer to launch in Adobe’s desktop app. It does not determine how Edge displays a PDF in a browser tab.

Windows
Right-click a PDF, select Properties, then use the Change control beside the app listed for opening the file. Choose Acrobat or Reader and confirm. Windows interface wording can vary. An administrator may manage this setting, in which case you may not be able to change it yourself.
macOS
Select a PDF in Finder and choose File > Get Info. In Open With, choose Acrobat or Reader, then select Change All to apply it to PDFs of that type. Adobe’s guide to making Acrobat or Reader the default PDF app on Windows and macOS was updated November 26, 2025.

Which setting should you change?
- Want Adobe tools while reading a PDF in an Edge tab? Enable the Adobe extension and make it Edge’s default PDF viewer.
- Want a PDF you download in Edge to launch the desktop app automatically? Use Acrobat’s downloaded-PDF auto-open prompt on Windows.
- Want PDFs opened from your computer to launch in Acrobat or Reader? Change the system’s default PDF app.
