To open an APK on Windows 11, install it in an Android environment rather than trying to run it as a Windows program. The documented route is Android Studio’s Android Emulator: start a virtual Android device, drag the APK onto the emulator window, finish the installer dialog, then launch the app from the emulator’s app list. Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) and Amazon Appstore have not been available in the Microsoft Store since March 5, 2025, so older WSA setup guides no longer describe a current Store installation path.
What “opening” an APK means on Windows 11
An APK is an Android app package. Windows 11 does not run it as a native Windows application; it needs to be installed in an Android environment, such as an emulator. With the steps below, the app runs inside a virtual Android device on your PC.
Use an APK from a source you trust. An APK is installable software, so treat it with the same care as any installer. Installation does not guarantee that a particular app or all of its features will work in an emulator.
Install an APK with Android Studio’s Android Emulator
This is the graphical route: create and start a virtual Android device, then drag the APK onto the emulator. Android Developers documents the drag-and-drop installation flow; Android Studio’s setup and device configuration may vary by version.

- Install Android Studio. Download it from the official Android Developers site. Consult its current system requirements during setup; the cited emulator instructions do not establish one hardware minimum that applies to every configuration.
- Create a virtual device if needed. In Android Studio, open its device tools and create an Android Virtual Device (AVD). Choose a device configuration, then start it so the Android Emulator window is running.
- Find the APK. Locate the APK file in Windows File Explorer and leave it accessible on screen.
- Drag the APK into the emulator. Drop it onto the emulator screen. An APK Installer dialog should appear, as described in Android Developers’ installation instructions.
- Finish installation and launch the app. Complete the installer dialog and wait for installation to finish. Find the app in the emulator’s app list and open it there.
Install an APK with adb
Android Debug Bridge (adb) is a command-line alternative for installing an APK on a running emulator or a connected Android device. It is useful for repeatable installs or scripts, but you need Android SDK Platform-Tools available in your terminal.
- Start the intended target. Launch an Android Emulator virtual device, or connect the Android device you intend to use.
- Check connected targets. In Command Prompt or another terminal where Platform-Tools are available, run:
adb devices - Install the APK. Replace the example path with the actual APK path, then run:
adb install path_to_apkFor example, if the file is named
sample.apkin the current directory, useadb install sample.apk. - Select a target if more than one is connected. Use the serial shown by
adb devices:adb -s serial_number install path_to_apkWithout a selected target, adb can report that more than one device or emulator is available. Google documents these commands and target selection in its adb guide.
Which installation route should you use?

Why old WSA instructions no longer apply
Microsoft states that Windows Subsystem for Android and the Amazon Appstore have not been available in the Microsoft Store since March 5, 2025. That change affects the former Windows-integrated route; it does not make an APK a Windows app or prevent the independently documented Android Emulator workflow.

Older WSA setup material listed x64 or ARM64 processors, enabled Virtual Machine Platform, and recommended 16 GB of RAM and SSD storage. Those were historical WSA details, not universal current requirements for Android Studio’s Emulator. For emulator setup, use the current Android Studio system requirements rather than treating old WSA figures as a checklist.
