On Windows, macOS, and Linux, the basic workflow is the same: keep a backup, make the files available to DOSBox, start GW-BASIC, and load the program. If a .BAS file is plain ASCII text, a modern editor or QBasic may also work; tokenized or protected files need a compatible BASIC interpreter.
Choose a way to open the program
The right option depends on whether you need the original interpreter, want to inspect readable source, or only need to try a compatible alternative.

For a program that must behave like it did under DOS GW-BASIC, start with DOSBox and the original interpreter. The GW-BASIC.com reference describes version 3.23 as a 1987 release and the last official commercial release; that is a community-maintained historical claim, not current Microsoft support information. Prepare files safely
- Make a working copy. Preserve the original program files before opening or saving them. This matters especially when you do not know whether the file is plain text, tokenized, or protected.
- Put the copy in a convenient host folder. For example, create a folder named
gwbasic-workand place the copy there. You choose both this folder and the DOS drive letter it will use. - Check a duplicate for readable text. Open only a duplicate in a text editor. If it displays readable BASIC statements, it may be ASCII text; if it looks like symbols or binary data, do not save it from the editor. A text editor is not a safe way to edit every file with a
.BASextension.
Historical BASIC programs may be stored in tokenized or protected formats. The cited community reference says PC-BASIC supports loading and saving protected programs, but does not establish compatibility with every protected file. GW-BASIC.com download reference

Run GW-BASIC through DOSBox
Use a DOSBox build appropriate for the host operating system. The DOSBox v0.74-3 manual covers Windows, Linux, and macOS under the older label “MAC OS X”; it documents command-line use and mounting a local folder, but does not provide current, version-specific installation steps for every modern system. - Place the GW-BASIC executable and your working copy where DOSBox can access them. Keep the interpreter and program in the mounted folder, or organize the folders so you can navigate to both inside DOSBox.
- Start DOSBox. Open its DOS prompt. On macOS or Linux, the manual documents console use; exact launch and installation details depend on the DOSBox build you install. DOSBox v0.74-3 manual
- Mount the host folder as a DOS drive. For example, if your host folder is
gwbasic-work, use a command in this form, replacing the example path with the actual host path:MOUNT C /path/to/gwbasic-work. The manual’s Windows-style example isMOUNT C C:GAMES; the mounted directory appears inside DOSBox as driveC:. DOSBox v0.74-3 manual - Switch to the mounted drive and start the interpreter. At the DOSBox prompt, enter
C:, then run the executable by its filename, such asGWBASIC, if that is its name. If you placed the interpreter in another folder, change to that folder first. - Load and run the program. At the GW-BASIC prompt, use the interpreter’s supported load/run workflow. The manual’s

Platform-specific considerations
Windows
GW-BASIC is a legacy DOS program. The community reference says its 16-bit executable does not run directly on modern 64-bit Windows and recommends DOSBox instead. Treat that as legacy-compatibility guidance rather than a current Microsoft support statement. GW-BASIC.com download reference
macOS
DOSBox’s v0.74-3 manual includes macOS command-line guidance using the historical name “MAC OS X.” It does not establish the installation procedure or compatibility of a particular DOSBox build with your current macOS release. Linux
The DOSBox manual documents console use and mounting a host directory, so the same workflow applies: launch DOSBox, mount the folder containing the files, switch to the mapped DOS drive, and start GW-BASIC. Edit the program without damaging it
If the file is readable ASCII
Edit a duplicate in a modern text editor, then test the changed copy in GW-BASIC or another interpreter. A readable listing is the strongest indication that a text editor is appropriate, but it does not prove the program uses only features supported by an alternative interpreter. The community reference says QBasic can run most GW-BASIC programs saved as ASCII; “most” is not a guarantee for a particular program. GW-BASIC.com download reference

If the file is tokenized or protected
Do not edit it in an ordinary text editor. Open and save it using a compatible BASIC interpreter, keeping the untouched original as a recovery copy. If you are unsure
- Keep the original file unchanged and experiment only with copies.
- Do not overwrite an unreadable file from a text editor; it may not be plain text.
- Prefer the original GW-BASIC interpreter in DOSBox when file format or behavior is uncertain.
- After editing, reopen or run the copy in the intended interpreter to confirm it still loads.
Where to find documentation
The archival 1987 Microsoft GW-BASIC User’s Guide and User’s Reference documents the interpreter and its commands. The DOSBox v0.74-3 manual explains mounting a host directory as a DOS drive. Microsoft’s GW-BASIC source archive is useful for historical study, but it does not provide a prebuilt executable for opening a program.
