A .CRDOWNLOAD file is a temporary file created by Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers while a download is unfinished. You generally cannot open it directly; resume or retry the download, and the browser will restore the file’s original extension when it completes.
The steps below apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10.
What is a .CRDOWNLOAD file?
Chrome uses a filename such as video.mp4.crdownload or setup.exe.crdownload for a download that has not completed. It may contain part of the requested download, but it is not necessarily usable yet.
The extension is associated with Chromium-based browser download handling. It is not a Windows-specific file format, and Windows does not need a special application to open it.

| File state | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| example.pdf.crdownload | The download is incomplete, paused, or failed | Resume or retry the download |
| example.pdf | The browser finished downloading the file | Open it with the normal PDF application |
| A stranded .crdownload file | The original download is no longer active | Delete it if you no longer need the partial data |
How to open a .CRDOWNLOAD file by completing the download
The recommended way to make the file usable is to finish the download in the browser that created it.
- Open Chrome.
- Look beside the address bar for the Download in progress icon.
- Select the icon and find the paused or incomplete download.
- Select Resume.
Chrome may resume the download automatically. If it completes successfully, the .crdownload suffix disappears from the filename. The file can then be opened normally according to its restored extension.
You can also check the download list by opening Chrome, selecting More (⋮), and selecting Downloads. Select a completed download’s filename to open it with the Windows application associated with that file type.
If the .CRDOWNLOAD file is paused
Open Chrome’s download list and select the item. Depending on its state, Chrome provides controls such as:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Pause — temporarily stops an active download.
- Resume — continues a paused download.
- Cancel — stops the download.
If Resume does not work, cancel the download and start it again from the original website.
If the download failed
A failed download usually needs to be retried rather than opened from the partial file. Right-click the original download link and select Save link as. Save the file to a location your Windows account can access, such as the Desktop or Documents folder.
An error mentioning Insufficient permissions or System busy means Chrome could not save the download locally; it does not mean the .CRDOWNLOAD file needs a special opener.
Check the download folder and free space
Chrome’s default download folder on Windows 10 and later is C:\Users\<username>\Downloads when Windows is installed on drive C:. For example, if the Windows account is named Alex, the folder is C:\Users\Alex\Downloads.

- Select More (⋮).
- Select Settings.
- Select Downloads.
- Select Change to choose another folder.
You can also turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading if you want to select a destination every time.
If Chrome reports Disk full, there is not enough free space for the download. Delete or move unwanted files, empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate, and retry. Moving a partial .CRDOWNLOAD file to another folder does not complete it.
Check antivirus and Windows security blocks
Security software can interrupt, remove, or block a download. Chrome may show messages such as Virus scan failed or Virus detected. Windows Attachment Manager can also apply protection to files downloaded from the internet.
A Chrome warning does not prove that the .CRDOWNLOAD extension itself is malware. Chrome can block downloads for several reasons, including detected malware, deceptive software, suspicious or uncommon files, insecure delivery, or Safe Browsing being disabled.
If Chrome shows Download blocked and you trust the source, check whether Windows marked the downloaded file:
- Open File Explorer and locate the file.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- On the General tab, inspect the security message.
- If an Unblock option is shown and you have verified the source, select it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Only unblock a file obtained from a source you trust. If the site or file is unfamiliar, leave the protection in place and obtain the file from a reputable source instead.
Can you rename a .CRDOWNLOAD file?
You should not simply rename filename.crdownload to filename.ext as a fix. Renaming changes the filename, but it does not add missing bytes or repair an interrupted download.
Some media players or archive utilities may appear to open a partially downloaded file after its extension is changed. That does not show that the file is complete or valid, and it may produce errors, corrupted output, or misleading results. The normal completion process is for the browser to remove .crdownload after the download finishes.

Can you delete a .CRDOWNLOAD file?
Yes, if the download is no longer needed and is not currently being resumed. Deleting it removes the incomplete partial download; it does not recover the missing completed file.
- Open Chrome’s Downloads page and cancel the related download if it is still listed.
- Open the download folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click the unwanted .CRDOWNLOAD file.
- Select Delete.
If you still need the file, leave the partial download in place and try Resume first. If resuming fails, download the original file again.
Does Windows 10 handle .CRDOWNLOAD files differently from Windows 11?
Current documentation does not establish a Windows 10-versus-Windows 11 difference that changes how these files are handled. In both versions, Chromium-based browsers use the temporary extension during an unfinished download. The browser’s download controls—not a Windows file opener—determine whether the file can be completed.
Bottom line
A .CRDOWNLOAD file is normally an unfinished browser download, not a file you open with a dedicated application. Use Chrome’s Downloads page or the Download in progress icon to resume it. If it failed, retry with Save link as, check available disk space and permissions, and consider whether security software blocked it. Avoid relying on renaming the file; complete the download or download the original file again.

FAQ
What program opens a .CRDOWNLOAD file?
No special program is required or supported for opening the temporary extension. Resume or complete the download in the Chromium-based browser that created it. After completion, open the file using the application associated with its restored extension.
Is a .CRDOWNLOAD file a virus?
The extension by itself is not evidence of malware. It normally indicates an incomplete Chrome or Chromium-based browser download. However, Chrome or antivirus software may block the underlying download if it is malicious, suspicious, or unsafe, so verify the source before retrying or unblocking it.
Why will my .CRDOWNLOAD file not open?
It is probably incomplete, paused, failed, blocked, or missing data. Open Chrome’s Downloads page and select Resume. If that fails, cancel the item and download the original file again.
Can I convert a .CRDOWNLOAD file to another format?
No reliable conversion can repair an incomplete download. Finish the download so the browser restores the original extension, or obtain the original file again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs it safe to delete a .CRDOWNLOAD file?
It is generally safe to delete one when you no longer need the download and the browser is not using it. Deletion removes only the incomplete partial file; it does not create the completed download.
