You can submit an objection to Meta’s use of your data for AI training if you are an adult Facebook or Instagram user in the EU or UK. Meta describes this as an objection form—not a universal switch that blocks training everywhere. Find the form through the account’s Privacy Center or a Meta notice, submit it, and save the confirmation.
Who can use Meta’s objection form?
Meta says adults in the EU and UK can object to the use of their data for AI training, and that the forms are available at any time. The route is regional; Meta’s statements do not establish that the same general form is available to users in every country. Meta said it would honor EU objection forms it had already received as well as newly submitted ones. Meta’s EU announcement was published April 14, 2025 and updated March 27, 2026; its UK statement was published in September 2024.
Meta’s EU statement says it plans to use adults’ public content and interactions with Meta AI to train its models. The UK statement describes public posts and comments, as well as public photos and captions from adult Facebook and Instagram accounts. These are regional descriptions, not a claim that the same practices or objection process apply identically worldwide.
How to submit an objection
- Sign in to the Facebook or Instagram account whose data you want to address.
- Open that account’s Privacy Center and look for its current generative-AI information and objection or request form. Alternatively, follow the form link in a Meta notice received in the app or by email. Meta says its EU notice links to a form and that the UK form can be accessed at any time.
- Complete and submit the form. Keep the confirmation or a record of the submission.
- If you have multiple Facebook or Instagram accounts, check each account’s Privacy Center or form instructions. The cited Meta statements do not establish whether one submission covers separate accounts.
Meta’s current form labels and exact fields may change. Use the logged-in Privacy Center or account notice rather than relying on an old set of click-by-click instructions.

What the objection covers—and what it does not establish
Public posts and other public content
Meta’s regional statements describe training use of public content shared by adults, including posts and comments. The UK statement also names public photos and captions. Submitting an objection is the formal route Meta describes for eligible adults to object to this use.
Private messages and chats shared with Meta AI
Meta says it does not use the content of private messages with friends and family to train its AI unless someone chooses to share those messages with an AI feature. Its EU page, updated March 27, 2026, clarifies that messages shared with Meta AI may be used for training.

People under 18
Meta says public data from EU accounts belonging to people under 18 is not used for training. Its UK statement separately says it does not use information from UK accounts belonging to people under 18.
Past training and model removal
An objection is not evidence that data already used to train a model has been removed or that a model has been untrained. Meta’s cited statements do not promise either outcome.

What users outside the EU and UK can do
The cited Meta statements do not establish an equivalent general AI-training objection form for every other country. Check the Privacy Center while signed in and consult the privacy rights that apply where you live. Meta’s United States Regional Privacy Notice, effective May 23, 2025, describes applicable U.S. privacy rights, including rights that depend on state law, and advertising controls; it does not establish the EU or UK AI-training objection form for U.S. users.

If your goal is to limit what can be seen publicly going forward, choose a more restricted audience when sharing a post or adjust the audience of existing posts using the platform’s sharing controls. This changes visibility; the cited sources do not establish that it removes content already used for training or reverses past training.
