To mute someone in Google Meet, open the participant controls and choose Mute beside their name—or use the person’s meeting tile on a computer. To silence everyone at once, open People and choose Mute all; that option requires Host Management to be on. Who can use these controls depends on the meeting’s settings and account type.
Mute one participant on a computer
- Point to the participant’s tile and click Mute. Alternatively, open People and click Mute beside the participant’s name.
- If the mute control is unavailable, the meeting’s permissions may not allow your account to mute other participants.
Google provides these steps for computer users in its Google Meet Help instructions for computers.
Mute one participant on iPhone or iPad
- Tap the meeting name at the top of the screen.
- Open People.
- Tap More beside the participant, then tap Mute.
These steps are documented in Google Meet Help for iPhone and iPad.
Who is allowed to mute other participants?
Muting permissions depend on Host Management and the type of account hosting the meeting. With Host Management on, only the main host and co-hosts can mute other participants. If it is off, Google lists different rules for personal-account, Workspace, and Education meetings:

- Personal-account meeting: only the moderator can mute others.
- Workspace meeting: a participant from the organizing domain may be able to mute another participant.
- Education meeting: the meeting creator, calendar event owner, or person who set up the meeting on in-room hardware may be able to mute participants.
Google’s current guidance is in its computer instructions and iPhone and iPad instructions. A person who has been muted must unmute themselves; for privacy reasons, another participant cannot turn their microphone back on.
Mute everyone in the meeting
Mute all requires Host Management to be on. On a computer, open People and select Mute all. On iPhone or iPad, tap the meeting name, open People, and select Mute everyone. Participants can unmute themselves after being muted.

Use Audio Lock when participants should stay muted
Muting silences the current audio, but participants can turn their microphones back on themselves. If you need to prevent participants from activating their microphones during the meeting, use Audio Lock instead. Host Management must be enabled, and the host or a co-host can turn off Turn on their microphone in Host controls. The lock does not apply to the host or co-hosts.
When Audio Lock is switched off, participants can turn their microphones on again, but anyone still muted must manually unmute. Google says Audio Lock can be set from a computer or iOS device, and its settings apply across devices. Its Audio and video lock instructions also warn that mobile participants may be removed if they do not have an updated Meet or Gmail app, Android M or newer, or iOS 12 or newer. Removed participants can rejoin after the lock is turned off.
