Multistreaming—also called simulcasting—means broadcasting one live production to more than one platform at the same time. The two main approaches are to send separate outputs from your computer or send one feed to a cloud relay that distributes it. The right choice depends on your computer, upload capacity, desired destinations, and control needs.
How to multistream: choose your method
You can multistream with a local encoder that sends outputs to multiple destinations, or with a cloud relay that receives one feed and forwards it. YouTube documents both approaches and describes local encoding as a fit for creators who want control and have capable hardware; a relay can be simpler and lighter on the computer, particularly when sending to more than two channels. Check that your destinations are ready
- YouTube: Your channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours, so request it well before your planned broadcast. YouTube Help
- Other platforms: Confirm that each account is active and in good standing, and that its current rules allow your intended simulcast. Account requirements differ by platform.
- Credentials: Depending on your chosen workflow, you may need each destination’s RTMP server URL and stream key. Treat stream keys as credentials and do not share them publicly.
Calculate the upload speed you need
Add the target bitrate for every independent output sent from your location. YouTube’s example adds a 6 Mbps stream and a 4 Mbps stream for a combined target of 10 Mbps. YouTube recommends upload speed of 1.5 to 2 times the combined target, which makes the example target 15–20 Mbps. YouTube Help: Stream across platforms
For a cloud relay, your connection sends one feed to the relay rather than a separate feed to every destination. Determine the bitrate for that outgoing feed and leave headroom for network variation. A fast connection alone does not guarantee a stable stream: test with the motion and audio you expect to use, then monitor the platform’s stream-health indicators while live.

How to multistream with OBS through Restream
Restream’s documented encoder workflow connects your platforms to its relay, then sends one OBS feed to that service. The specific account connections, supported destinations, and plan limits can change; confirm current availability and terms in Restream before relying on the setup. Restream’s OBS multistream guide
- Connect your Twitch and YouTube accounts as channels in Restream.
- Create an Encoder | RTMP stream in Restream and select the destinations you want enabled.
- Copy the relay stream key provided for that stream.
- In OBS, configure the stream service and key to send to Restream. You can also use OBS’s account-connection option where available.
- Start the stream from OBS. Check each destination to confirm it is receiving the broadcast, and verify audio, framing, and stream health.

Check quality and platform rules
Viewer quality options can differ
Do not assume that every viewer can select the same range of video qualities on every destination. OBS’s documentation says transcoding availability depends on the platform and account tier. Its article, dated 2021-06-09, describes Twitch access as tiered and YouTube as transcoding all streams; because the article is dated, check current platform documentation before relying on those exact access details. Follow Twitch’s simulcasting guidance
Twitch says its simulcasting guidance applies unless an agreement requires exclusivity. It says the Twitch viewing experience must not be worse than the experience on other services, and prohibits using Twitch to direct viewers to another service’s live stream. Review Twitch’s current terms and any agreement that applies to your account before going live. Twitch Terms of Service

Troubleshoot a multistream
- One destination does not receive the stream: Check that it is selected and enabled in the relay or encoder, and verify that the account connection or RTMP URL and key are current.
- Video stutters or drops: Compare the bitrate of all local outputs with your available upload speed. Reduce the combined target if needed, test again under realistic conditions, and watch the destination’s stream-health indicator.
- The computer struggles: Multiple local outputs can increase processing demand, especially if encoding is repeated. Consider sending one feed through a relay, which shifts distribution to the service.
- YouTube will not let you start: Confirm that live streaming is enabled and the channel is verified. First-time activation may take at least 24 hours.
- Viewers report different quality choices: Transcoding options depend on the platform and, in some cases, the account tier. Check the current rules for the affected destination.

For technical teams considering a live-input distribution service, Cloudflare Stream documentation lists up to 50 concurrent destinations per live input.
