On standard retail Windows 11, Settings normally cannot move the entire taskbar to the right edge; its alignment option moves the Start button and icons only. Native taskbar positioning is being tested in Insider Experimental builds, while ExplorerPatcher is a third-party option for supported retail builds. The old registry workaround is not dependable on current Windows 11 versions.

First, check what Windows 11 normally allows

On a standard retail build, open Start > Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar alignment. The setting offers Center and Left; it changes the position of the Start button and taskbar icons, not the taskbar itself. Microsoft’s taskbar instructions document the retail alignment choices.

Setting What it changes
Taskbar alignment: Center Centers the Start button and taskbar icons
Taskbar alignment: Left Places the Start button and icons toward the left side of the taskbar
Taskbar position: Right Moves the entire taskbar to the right edge; this is not normally available on retail Windows 11

If you do not see a taskbar-position control in Taskbar behaviors, your Windows build does not expose the native feature.

Method 1: Move the taskbar right using a Windows Insider Experimental build

Microsoft is testing native taskbar repositioning in Windows Insider Experimental builds. Where the feature is enabled, you can place the taskbar on the Bottom, Top, Left, or Right side of the screen. It is not generally available in the retail Windows 11 instructions as of August 7, 2026. Microsoft’s release notes label the feature Experimental.

Experimental features can change, be delayed, or never become part of a normal release. Microsoft describes the channel as a place for early features that may change or not ship. Read Microsoft’s channel explanation.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Go to Personalization > Taskbar.
  3. Expand Taskbar behaviors.
  4. Open the taskbar-position control.
  5. Select Right.

The icon-alignment choices depend on the taskbar’s location:

  • For a left or right taskbar, icons can be aligned at the top or center.
  • For a top or bottom taskbar, icons can be aligned to the left or center.

Limitations of the Insider implementation

Microsoft lists several limitations for alternate positions. See Microsoft’s feature notes.

  • Automatic taskbar hiding is not supported in alternate positions.
  • The tablet-optimized taskbar is not supported in alternate positions.
  • Touch gestures for alternate positions were still in progress.
  • The full Search box is replaced by a Search icon.
  • Different taskbar positions per monitor and taskbar drag-and-drop were still being evaluated.

If the position control is missing, the normal Taskbar alignment setting cannot force it to appear. You need an eligible Insider build with the feature enabled, and preview software can introduce compatibility issues.

Method 2: Use ExplorerPatcher on a retail Windows 11 build

ExplorerPatcher is a third-party utility that modifies parts of the Windows shell. It can use a Windows 10-style taskbar implementation, which supports placing the taskbar on the right. It is not made, supported, or endorsed by Microsoft. Compatibility depends on your Windows build, and a Windows update may affect it. Create a restore point or make sure you have a current backup before installing.

Install ExplorerPatcher

  1. Open the project’s official GitHub Releases page. The project warns that copies from other sites may contain malware.
  2. Download ep_setup.exe for an Intel or AMD Windows PC, or ep_setup_arm64.exe for a Snapdragon or other ARM64 PC.
  3. Run the installer. Explorer may restart, close, or reload during installation.

Set the taskbar location to the right

  1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Taskbar section in ExplorerPatcher Properties.
  4. If needed, set Taskbar style to Windows 10 (ExplorerPatcher).
  5. Set Primary taskbar location on screen to Right.
  6. If the taskbar does not move immediately, select Restart File Explorer.

The wording and available controls can vary between releases and Windows builds. On Windows 11 22H2 and later, ExplorerPatcher says its Windows 10 ExplorerPatcher taskbar, ep_taskbar, is used by default. Check the project’s release notes.

Remove ExplorerPatcher if necessary

If the modification causes instability, use the ExplorerPatcher Properties interface, Programs and Features, or Settings > Apps > Installed apps to remove it. If the installer is still in the same location, the project documents this uninstall command:

ep_setup.exe /uninstall

After uninstalling, Explorer may restart and the taskbar may return to the standard Windows 11 layout.

Why the old registry method no longer works reliably

Many older Windows guides recommend editing this registry location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects3

They typically instruct users to edit the binary Settings value and change a position byte to 02. Older Windows 11 builds commonly used this mapping:

Value Position
00 Left
01 Top
02 Right
03 Bottom

This is not a supported current-Windows 11 procedure. The redesigned taskbar introduced with Windows 11 version 22H2, based on build 22621, made the workaround ineffective or unreliable. On many systems, the value reverts to 03 after Explorer restarts and the taskbar remains at the bottom. Microsoft Q&A documents this issue.

Editing the registry can leave the Windows shell in an inconsistent state if the wrong value or location is changed. Do not rely on the StuckRects3 edit as a universal fix.

Common problems and fixes

The “Right” option is missing

This is normal on most retail Windows 11 installations. The standard Taskbar behaviors page exposes icon alignment, not full taskbar positioning. The native Right option is associated with the Insider Experimental implementation.

The registry change did nothing

That usually means you are on a current Windows 11 build where the old StuckRects3 workaround has been blocked or superseded. The value may revert after Explorer reloads. Use the native option only if your Insider build provides it, or use a maintained third-party tool such as ExplorerPatcher.

Explorer keeps restarting after ExplorerPatcher is installed

ExplorerPatcher’s release notes document build-specific compatibility problems, including crash loops on some Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 configurations when certain Start menu settings are combined with the Windows 10 or Windows 10 ExplorerPatcher taskbar. Check current release notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, install the newest compatible ExplorerPatcher release from the official repository. If the loop continues, uninstall it through its Properties interface, Apps settings, Programs and Features, or the documented ep_setup.exe /uninstall command. You may need Task Manager to start explorer.exe or reach Settings if the shell is not usable.

The taskbar moved, but search or auto-hide is different

On Microsoft’s Insider implementation, alternate positions do not support automatic hiding, and the full Search box becomes a Search icon. These are documented limitations, not signs that the position setting failed.

A Windows update broke the taskbar modification

Both approaches are build-dependent. Microsoft can change an experimental feature between Insider builds, while ExplorerPatcher may need a release tailored to a new Windows update. Check the relevant release notes before reinstalling or changing registry values.

Which method should you use?

Your situation Best choice Trade-off
Retail Windows 11 and you need the taskbar on the right ExplorerPatcher Unofficial and potentially affected by Windows updates
Eligible Insider Experimental build Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors Preview feature with documented limitations
You want a Microsoft-supported retail solution There is currently no built-in right-side option The taskbar stays at the bottom; only icon alignment can change
You found an old registry tutorial Do not rely on it The method is outdated for current Windows 11 builds

The Bottom Line

For most Windows 11 users, there is no built-in retail setting that moves the taskbar to the right side. The Taskbar alignment menu changes icon alignment only. If your Insider Experimental build includes the new taskbar-position control, choose Right under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors. Otherwise, ExplorerPatcher is the practical third-party option if you accept its compatibility and support risks. Avoid the old StuckRects3 registry instructions; they are outdated for current Windows 11 builds.

FAQ

Can I move the Windows 11 taskbar to the right without installing anything?

Usually not. Standard retail Windows 11 only provides left and center taskbar icon alignment. Native top, bottom, left, and right positioning is being tested in Insider Experimental builds.

Does Taskbar alignment set to Right move the taskbar?

No. On retail Windows 11, the alignment setting controls where the Start button and taskbar icons sit. It does not move the taskbar to the right edge of the screen.

Is ExplorerPatcher safe to use?

ExplorerPatcher is a third-party shell customization tool, not Microsoft software. Download it only from the project’s official GitHub repository, back up important data first, and expect compatibility to depend on your Windows build.

Will the StuckRects3 registry hack work on Windows 11 23H2 or newer?

It is not dependable on current Windows 11 versions. The old taskbar-position edit stopped working reliably after the Windows 11 22H2 taskbar redesign and may revert after Explorer restarts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I hide a taskbar moved to the right?

Microsoft’s Insider alternate-position implementation does not support automatic taskbar hiding. Third-party tools may behave differently, but their support depends on the Windows build and tool version.
