Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo move Photoshop to a different computer, export presets such as brushes and actions from their panels on the old computer, transfer the exported files, and import them in the matching panels on the new computer. Back up preferences separately by copying Photoshop’s version-specific settings folder while the app is closed. Copy project documents and linked assets as files; they are not included in a preset or preferences transfer.
What transfers—and what does not
Photoshop presets are saved collections, such as brushes, gradients, swatches, patterns, styles, tool presets, and workspaces. Preferences are active settings that control tools and interface behavior. Actions are recorded sequences of operations. Treat these as separate items when planning the move.
Adobe’s migration guidance covers presets and settings, not a complete project-file migration. Copy your Photoshop documents and any linked assets separately from wherever they are stored. Purchased brushes, fonts, plug-ins, and other third-party assets may have separate installation, account, or licensing requirements; check their vendors’ instructions.
Transfer presets between computers
1. Export presets on the old computer
Open the panel for the preset type you want to move and use its export or save command. Adobe’s examples include Export Selected Brushes, Export Gradients, and Save Actions. Export each type you need; a brush file, for example, is not a substitute for an actions file.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)

2. Carry the exported files to the new computer
Copy the exported files using a USB drive, a network location, or cloud storage. Adobe lists all three as transfer options, so a USB drive is convenient but not required. Adobe’s guide to transferring presets between devices describes the current manual process.
3. Import each preset in Photoshop
On the new computer, open the corresponding Photoshop panel and use its import or load command. Load saved action files in the Actions panel and import brush files in the Brushes panel. Repeat for every preset type, then check the relevant panels to confirm the items appear.

Back up and restore Photoshop preferences
Preferences are separate from exported presets. To back them up, close Photoshop first, then copy the complete settings folder for the Photoshop version you use to another location. Give the backup a recognizable name that includes the date and Photoshop version, and keep an untouched copy until the new setup is verified. Adobe notes that settings are saved when Photoshop closes and may be lost if the app is force quit or crashes; see Adjust preferences in Photoshop.
To restore the backup on the new computer, close Photoshop, move or rename the new installation’s current settings folder, and copy the backup into the matching location. Launch Photoshop and check the settings. Keeping the original new-computer folder temporarily gives you a fallback if the transferred preferences cause problems.

Where Photoshop settings are stored
The folder name includes the Photoshop version. Adobe lists these locations for the user account:
- macOS:
~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings. The user Library folder is hidden by default. In Finder, hold Option, open the Go menu, and choose Library. - Windows:
C:Users<user name>AppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop <version>Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings. The user AppData folder is hidden by default.
Adobe’s preferences backup and restore reference lists settings files that can be copied manually, including Actions Palette.psp, Brushes.psp, Contours.psp, CustomShapes.psp, Default Type Styles.psp, Gradients.psp, Patterns.psp, Styles.psp, Swatches.psp, and ToolPresets.psp. Prefer a panel’s export and import functions for individual portable presets when available; use the folder copy for a broader preferences backup or when copying the relevant settings file is appropriate.

Why presets may be missing
- Check that you exported from the panel for the correct preset type and imported the file into the matching panel on the new computer.
- If you meant to move presets between Photoshop versions installed on the same computer, Adobe’s command is Edit > Presets > Migrate Presets. For multiple older versions, migrate sequentially, starting with the oldest. This command is not Adobe’s cross-computer transfer method; see Migrate presets, actions, and settings.
- Camera Raw presets supplied as XMP files use a separate location. Adobe’s troubleshooting page gives
/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw/Settingson macOS andC:/Users/<user name>/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settingson Windows. Check Adobe’s current plug-in and preset troubleshooting guidance before relying on those paths. - If a third-party plug-in is missing, Adobe advises reinstalling the latest version from its vendor; installation may require administrator privileges. Purchased assets and plug-in entitlements may have separate vendor or account rules.
Can Photoshop presets sync between computers?
Adobe says Preset Sync was discontinued in Photoshop 25.0 in September 2023. For a move between computers, use manual export, transfer, and import instead. Adobe’s current transfer guide explains the supported workflow.
