You can copy files from OneDrive to an open-source cloud service such as Nextcloud or ownCloud with rclone, or download them to a computer and upload them through the destination’s app or website. Use a copy-first process: keep OneDrive intact until you have checked the destination and any separate backup.

Choose a transfer method

rclone is a command-line option for connecting to OneDrive and a destination remote. A graphical alternative is to download files locally and upload them with the destination’s desktop client or web interface. The right route depends on whether you prefer command-line setup or local file handling.

Consideration rclone Download and upload
Setup Requires command-line use, OneDrive authorization, and configuration for both remotes. The rclone OneDrive guide describes browser authorization; the destination must also be configured according to its current instructions. Uses local storage and the destination’s available upload method. Confirm files are actually downloaded, not just represented by cloud-only placeholders.
Local storage Can avoid staging a complete local copy when both remotes are accessible to rclone. Needs enough local space for the files being downloaded, or a deliberate staged approach.
Transfer path Server-side copying depends on support by both remotes; otherwise rclone downloads and re-uploads the data. See rclone’s operation documentation. Files pass through the computer before they are uploaded.
Best suited to People comfortable with configuration and command-line transfers. People who prefer a graphical workflow or want to inspect files locally.

Before you start

Check the account and destination

  • Identify whether the OneDrive account is personal or work/school. If the files belong to an employer or school, check its policies and access requirements before transferring them.
  • Review the top-level folders, shared items, and expected file counts and sizes so you can compare the result later.
  • Decide whether to self-host Nextcloud or ownCloud, or use a managed provider. Check available storage, upload limits, naming or path restrictions, backup terms, data location, and migration support with the administrator or provider. Nextcloud’s provider and partner information can help identify options; it does not establish a universally best host or provider pricing.

Make a separate backup

Keep a recoverable copy of important files before migrating. The ownCloud guide to migration with rclone puts it plainly: “And of course: Have a backup!” Its worked example is a Nextcloud-to-ownCloud Infinite Scale move, not a tested OneDrive-to-Nextcloud recipe.

Account for OneDrive Files On-Demand on Windows

In Windows, a OneDrive item marked online-only may appear in File Explorer without its contents being stored locally. Microsoft says online-only files take no local disk space and cannot be opened offline. When moved outside the OneDrive folder, they download to the new location. Check that downloads complete and that you have adequate disk space before relying on this route. These details are specific to Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guidance for Windows; do not assume the same interface on macOS or Linux.

Copy with rclone

  1. Install rclone and consult the current documentation. Backend behavior and command options may change, so use the OneDrive backend instructions for the installed version.
  2. Configure and authorize OneDrive. Set up a OneDrive remote and complete the browser-based authorization described in rclone’s guide. The setup flow distinguishes account and site choices, including personal/business OneDrive or SharePoint options; available choices depend on the account type and current backend behavior.
  3. Configure the destination remote. Follow the destination’s current instructions for a supported backend or WebDAV connection. Do not put credentials in a public script or share them with others.
  4. Test with a small, representative folder. Copy a subset containing nested folders and a mix of file types. Inspect it at the destination before transferring the rest.
  5. Copy the remaining files, then verify them. Prefer a copy operation for the initial migration. Consult rclone’s documentation on copy, sync, and remote operations before choosing a different operation: sync and move can have different effects on source and destination data.

Do not assume a OneDrive-to-Nextcloud or OneDrive-to-ownCloud transfer can be copied server-to-server. Rclone documents server-side copying only for supported remote combinations; when that is unavailable, data must be downloaded and uploaded.

Transfer through your computer

  1. Make local files available. On Windows, check Files On-Demand status and allow online-only files to download when moved or copied outside the OneDrive folder. Plan for the local space this requires.
  2. Download or copy a manageable batch. Keep the folder structure where possible, and avoid removing the OneDrive originals.
  3. Upload with the destination’s desktop client or web interface. Follow the service’s current upload instructions and check for any limits that apply to your account or installation.
  4. Inspect the uploaded folders and files. Confirm that the expected items appear and that representative files open at the destination.

Verify what matters before retiring OneDrive

A successful file copy is not necessarily a full migration of collaboration features. Rclone normally preserves modification time and MIME type where possible; its documentation describes broader metadata handling with a flag. That does not establish that OneDrive sharing links, permissions, comments, or version history will transfer intact. Ordinary local upload also should not be assumed to recreate service-specific sharing or history.
