Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe keyboard shortcut depends on your operating system. In Ubuntu, press Alt+F7, move the window with the arrow keys, then press Enter. In Windows, try Alt+Spacebar and select Move if it appears. On a Mac, Apple documents window movement through VoiceOver, so that method requires VoiceOver to be enabled.
Move a window in Windows
- Make the dialog or window active. If it is behind another window, switch to it first.
- Press Alt+Spacebar to open the active window’s shortcut menu. Microsoft documents this shortcut.
- If the menu includes Move, select it using the menu’s keyboard navigation or the access key shown onscreen.
- Use the arrow keys to reposition the window, then press Enter to finish.
The Move command is not guaranteed to appear for every dialog or application window; Microsoft’s shortcut documentation confirms Alt+Spacebar but does not establish Move as universally available. If the menu has no Move option, this route will not reposition that window.
Move a window to another monitor
To shift the active window between monitors, press Windows key+Shift+Left Arrow or Windows key+Shift+Right Arrow. This changes which monitor the window is on; it does not move it incrementally with the arrow keys. Microsoft lists both shortcuts.
Moving the dialog versus using its controls
Tab and Shift+Tab move among dialog controls, while Alt+underlined letter invokes a command or selects an option. Arrow keys can select a button when a radio-button group is active. These actions navigate the dialog’s contents; they do not move the dialog window itself. Microsoft documents these dialog-control shortcuts.

- Use the arrow keys to position it.
- Press Enter to finish, or Esc to restore the window to its original position and size.
Ubuntu’s desktop guide documents this keyboard-only method. It also documents Alt+F8 for resizing a window with the keyboard.
Move a window on a Mac with VoiceOver
- Use VoiceOver navigation to reach the window.
- Press VO-Accent (the Accent key may also be called Grave Accent).
- Use the arrow keys to move the window. Apple says number keys 1–9 can quickly place windows or objects into screen regions.
This is Apple’s documented VoiceOver method, not a general shortcut for every Mac user. Apple’s VoiceOver guide also notes that VoiceOver tells you if an item cannot be moved.

Which method should you use?
| Platform | Keyboard method | What it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | Alt+Spacebar, then select Move if available; arrows reposition | Fine positioning of the active window | The Move command may not appear in every window’s menu. |
| Windows | Windows key+Shift+Left/Right Arrow | Moves the active window to another monitor | Changes monitor placement rather than moving the window by small increments. |
| Ubuntu | Alt+F7, then arrow keys; Enter finishes and Esc cancels | Fine positioning of the active window | Ubuntu’s documented keyboard-only method. |
| macOS | VoiceOver navigation, then VO-Accent and arrow keys | Moves a window or item | Requires VoiceOver. |
Why keyboard window movement may not work
- The target is not active: activate or switch to the dialog before using the platform shortcut.
- Windows has no Move item: Alt+Spacebar opens the shortcut menu, but a Move command is not documented as universal.
- You are navigating controls, not moving the window: Tab, Shift+Tab, and control-specific arrow-key behavior apply to dialog contents.
- The Mac method is unavailable: Apple’s documented keyboard route uses VoiceOver; it is not presented as a general shortcut without that accessibility feature.
