To add tvOS at the Kotlin Multiplatform build layer, declare separate device and simulator targets, put code shared by those targets in an appropriate intermediate source set, and isolate fork-specific build logic from upstream-oriented files. You can either maintain a source fork, which gives you direct control over build and module changes, or use the community compose-tvos settings plugin to redirect eligible dependencies to published tvOS variants.
What targets and source sets do you need for tvOS?
A target represents a compilation platform; a source set groups code, dependencies, and compiler options that are compiled for one or more targets. For tvOS, Kotlin’s project-structure documentation uses tvosArm64 for a device target and tvosSimulatorArm64 for an Apple-silicon simulator target. It describes tvosMain as an intermediate source set in which those targets can share code. Kotlin Multiplatform project structure
The practical organizing principle is to place code at the narrowest shared level that fits its needs:

This is a conceptual hierarchy, not a promise that every project will create these exact intermediate sets automatically. The available hierarchy depends on the targets declared and the Kotlin Gradle Plugin’s conventions or configuration. Since device and simulator are distinct targets, a successful simulator build by itself does not establish that the device target builds.

How should you organize a Compose Multiplatform fork?
When you need to change the source build itself, keep fork-specific settings and build logic distinguishable from files intended to track upstream. The JetBrains Compose Multiplatform Core repository demonstrates this approach with separate fork entry files rather than making its fork layout a general Gradle convention.
What the fork entry files show

Together, these files illustrate how that repository keeps its fork configuration alongside upstream-oriented build files. The repository also notes that its setup makes strong assumptions about project structure. Its buildSrc-fork name, catalog arrangement, and entry-file pattern are specific to that fork—not requirements imposed on every Kotlin Multiplatform project.

When source-level control is worth the upkeep
A source fork is the better fit when you need to change underlying modules, build logic, or platform work that published artifacts do not provide. That control comes with responsibility for keeping the fork’s source changes and build setup aligned as upstream evolves. Do not assume a task name or wrapper invocation from another branch: check the exact branch’s build files and instructions before using a command.

The community compose-tvos settings plugin documents an alternative: declare tvOS targets in a consumer module, then let the plugin substitute eligible dependency variants with tvOS-enabled alternatives. Its README describes applying the plugin in settings.gradle.kts, using tvosArm64() and tvosSimulatorArm64(), and redirecting supported dependencies.

The plugin’s README describes an “official first” strategy for modules whose upstream variants exist, a remote manifest for version mapping, and interception of org.jetbrains.compose plugin resolution for its fork-specific Compose Resources packaging. These are features described by the plugin maintainers for their own artifacts; they are not guarantees from JetBrains or a general property of Gradle dependency resolution.
Check compatibility and artifact coverage
In the README inspected on 7 October 2026, the stated requirements include Gradle 8.0 or later, Kotlin 2.3.20 or later for consumer projects targeting tvOS, and JetBrains Compose Multiplatform 1.6 or later. The README’s sample quickstart and displayed compatibility matrix can reflect different release states, so verify the actual plugin release and its current version mapping before choosing versions. The same documentation lists supported Compose UI, foundation, and runtime artifacts and additional AndroidX families; coverage depends on the modules and variants explicitly supported by that plugin.

The plugin documentation also describes building a Kotlin framework for each tvOS target and a particular nesting arrangement for Compose Resources bundles expected by its tvOS resource reader. Treat those packaging details as specific to this plugin’s artifact path, not as universal requirements for a source fork or all Compose Multiplatform projects.

Choose a fork if your work requires source-level changes or control over modules beyond published coverage. Prefer dependency redirection if the modules you need are mapped, you can accept the plugin’s compatibility surface, and you want to avoid owning a source fork. This is a control-and-maintenance tradeoff, not a claim about relative build speed or cost.

What is officially documented, and what environment is needed?
As of the sources checked on 7 October 2026, JetBrains’ Compose Multiplatform repository overview presents Android, iOS, desktop, and beta web, but does not list tvOS among its documented targets. The community plugin presents itself as a route to tvOS variants where upstream artifacts are unavailable. That distinction describes the documentation snapshot, not a guarantee that official support status will remain unchanged.
Kotlin’s Multiplatform quickstart, dated 2 October 2026, says Apple-platform development requires a macOS machine with Xcode installed and calls for launching Xcode for initial tool setup. It discusses Apple development in an iOS context, so it does not by itself provide a tvOS-specific local setup recipe or establish tvOS as a target in the project wizard.
