Model a lifecycle by naming the thing whose behavior you are describing, defining its meaningful states, and specifying which events can move it between those states—and what each move does. A useful contract also distinguishes expected behavior from rules that constrain how callers may use the object, then checks that the target runtime follows the semantics assumed by the model.

What belongs in a lifecycle contract?

UML describes state-machine notation as a convenient way to define an object’s lifecycle or the order in which its operations are invoked. Its specification distinguishes behavioral state machines, which model behavior, from protocol state machines, which express legal transitions or usage rules for a classifier. The UML specification (ISO/IEC 19505-2:2012(E)) is the primary reference for that distinction.

For a practical contract, make the boundary explicit: identify the object or system being modeled and what lies outside it. Then define the states that matter to its callers and the transitions that connect them. For every transition, record:

  • Source and destination: the state before and after the transition.
  • Trigger: the event or operation that requests the transition.
  • Guard or precondition: any condition that must hold for it to occur.
  • Action and postcondition: the observable work or result associated with the state change.
  • Disallowed use: events or operations that are illegal in a given state, when the contract also governs callers.

This checklist is a practical way to apply UML’s behavior/protocol distinction and the common state, event, and action elements of a state-machine diagram; it is not a template mandated by the standard. IBM’s overview explains how states, triggering events, transitions, and actions communicate behavior in UML state machines.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Behavior description or usage protocol?

Decide whether the model describes what the object does, sets rules for how it may be used, or serves both purposes. A behavioral model can explain responses to inputs; a protocol model can make illegal call sequences explicit. They are related, but not interchangeable: UML recognizes them as distinct state-machine kinds.

Modeling choice Primary purpose Useful question
Behavioral state machine Describe behavior and responses to events. What does the object do when this event occurs in this state?
Protocol state machine Constrain legal transitions or usage. Which operations may a caller invoke from this state?
Combined contract Describe behavior while making permitted use clear. What happens for a legal event, and what does the contract say about an illegal one?

The final question matters because a diagram that lists valid transitions does not automatically define how an implementation handles every invalid event. State that behavior where callers or tests need to rely on it.

How to make the lifecycle readable

Begin with the states a client or caller can meaningfully distinguish, not every internal flag or implementation detail. Add hierarchy only when it clarifies shared behavior or nested phases; use initial and final states when they help show the machine’s entry point and bounded completion. Define the scope of each machine, especially if a larger lifecycle contains nested machines or concurrent regions.

Framework documentation illustrates concepts such as hierarchical states, regions, initial and final states, and history states. For example, Spring Statemachine’s reference documentation describes these features alongside events and transitions. It documents that framework’s concepts and behavior; it does not replace the UML specification.

Keep the contract useful to its audience: expose states and actions that implementers, callers, and tests can observe consistently. If an action is purely internal, distinguish it from a promised external effect. This makes the model easier to review and gives tests concrete behavior to check.

Check the runtime before treating the diagram as executable truth

A standard’s conceptual semantics and a framework’s execution rules may differ. Zephyr’s State Machine Framework documentation says it follows UML hierarchical-state transition rules but documents specific departures:

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Transition actions run in the source-state context rather than after exit actions.
  • Only external self-transitions are allowed; a transition from a superstate to a child is treated as local.
  • Transitions using smf_set_state() in exit actions are prohibited.

These rules are specific to Zephyr, not universal properties of state-machine libraries. Before encoding a diagram, check the target runtime’s transition order, allowed transition forms, and action timing. If its semantics differ from the model’s assumptions, revise the model, the implementation, or both so the contract and executable behavior agree.
