Run a local mock server from your OpenAPI description, then point your frontend at the mock’s local URL. Prism CLI is a direct option: it can serve documented operations, use response examples or generate responses from schemas, and validate requests against the description. This lets frontend work proceed before the real API is ready—but a successful mock call does not prove the production backend behaves the same way.

What you need before starting

  • An OpenAPI YAML or JSON file that includes the paths, HTTP methods, parameters, request bodies, and response schemas your screen needs.
  • Node.js for the Prism CLI. Prism’s project documentation lists Node.js 18.20.1 or later, with an exception for Node.js 18.x requiring 18.16 or later. Check the current package guidance before standardizing a long-lived project setup, since requirements can change.
  • A way to configure the frontend’s API base URL for local development, such as an existing environment variable or development proxy.

For screens that need particular data or states, put explicit response examples in the OpenAPI description. A schema describes the shape and types of data; it usually does not express application-specific rules such as which items belong in an empty state or which error a particular user should see.

Start a local Prism mock

  1. Install Prism CLI: run npm install -g @stoplight/prism-cli in a terminal. This is the global installation command documented by the Prism project.
  2. Start the server: run prism mock path/to/openapi.yaml, replacing the path with the location of your OpenAPI file. Prism reports the address where it is listening and the operations it discovers. Its CLI guide shows http://127.0.0.1:4010; use the actual address printed by your process if it differs.
  3. Set the frontend base URL: configure the application’s existing development API setting to use the mock origin, for example http://127.0.0.1:4010. Keep this in local development configuration rather than hard-coding it into application code.
  4. Call a documented operation: use the browser app or an HTTP client to request a path and method from the OpenAPI file. For example, if the spec documents GET /users, try curl -i http://127.0.0.1:4010/users. A successful response confirms that the local mock answered that request; inspect its status, headers, and body against what the frontend expects.

Prism’s HTTP mock server is described by its project as simulating a web API with endpoints and validation rules from an API description document. It can therefore do more than return arbitrary static JSON: the specification is the basis for both routes and request checking.

Choose response examples for the UI states you need

Prism prefers examples authored in the OpenAPI description. When examples are absent, it can generate values from response schemas. Generated values are useful for getting a basic flow running, but they may not represent meaningful business scenarios. Add named examples for stable states such as a successful populated response, an empty result, or an error your interface must handle.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prism supports multiple named examples; the documented selection convention is a request header such as Prefer: example=empty, where empty is the name of an example in your specification. Its documentation also describes dynamic generation through prism mock -d or a request header Prefer: dynamic=true. Use examples when you need repeatable UI states; dynamic generation is an option when changing generated values is more useful than a fixed response.

Include the expected response status code with each example. Prism’s guidance notes that validation or security behavior can affect the returned status and prevent an example from being selected as expected.

Mock only the endpoints a screen needs

You do not need to wait for every API route to be finished before building a particular screen. Make sure the OpenAPI file contains the operations that screen calls, then have the frontend use the local mock while those requests are exercised. If the spec contains many unrelated operations, focus your test requests and examples on the screen’s dependencies; do not assume an undocumented route will be served simply because another route works.

For predictable development, record the spec path, mock command, local port, frontend base-URL setting, and any example-selection convention in the project README or package scripts. That gives teammates a repeatable way to start the same workflow.

Fix connection and response problems

The browser reports a CORS error

First check whether the mock is reachable outside the browser, for example with the curl command above. If that works but the browser blocks the request, inspect the browser’s network panel and compare the frontend and mock origins. Configure the mock’s CORS behavior or use the frontend development proxy already used by the project. CORS is a browser cross-origin restriction, so it is distinct from whether the mock has a matching route. OpenAPI Mock documents CORS as configurable and disabled by default.

The response is not the state the screen needs

Check that the response schema and example describe the desired state, that the request is selecting the intended named example, and that the example’s status code matches the expected response. If the spec lacks an example, Prism may generate a schema-shaped response that does not encode the business condition your UI needs.

The request does not match an operation

Compare the request’s method and path with the OpenAPI description and the operations Prism reports when it starts. Also verify that the frontend is calling the mock origin and not the real API or a different local service.

Drive endpoints and request validation from OpenAPI Prism How closely its spec-driven responses, examples, content negotiation, and validation fit the frontend workflow.
Configure and share a mock-server environment Mockoon Environment setup, local server behavior, CORS needs, and how the team stores or shares configuration.
Load a local or remote OpenAPI spec and tune server settings OpenAPI Mock Specification source, port configuration, CORS, and response settings.
Build general HTTP stubs or broader request-matching behavior WireMock Standalone deployment, request matching, dynamic responses, and whether OpenAPI-derived behavior is necessary.

Choose according to the required spec fidelity, custom behavior, request validation, and how the team wants to configure and share mocks. A mock server can unblock UI work and check request/response shape, but its example or generated responses do not establish production availability, authorization behavior, persistence, or business-logic parity.
