There is no general Claude-to-another-assistant import path established by the available provider documentation. Treat a cross-provider move as a controlled rebuild: inventory the work your team relies on, preserve permitted records, recreate instructions and integrations, pilot representative tasks, and cut over only after workflow owners approve the results. A provider’s own account-migration feature is narrower: Anthropic documents moving an individual Claude account into a Claude organization, while OpenAI documents moving a personal ChatGPT workspace into ChatGPT Business or Enterprise. Neither is a Claude-to-ChatGPT, Claude-to-Gemini, or other cross-provider transfer.

What “migration” means for a team

A workflow is more than its chat history. It may depend on instructions, reference files, saved preferences, connected apps, permissions, automation, and decisions made in prior conversations. Teams often call several of these things “memory,” but they can have different owners, export options, and transfer paths. A chat archive may preserve a record without recreating the working knowledge or procedure that made the workflow useful.

Keep two cases separate:

  • Moving within one provider: Follow the documented path for that provider and the specific source and destination account types. Anthropic’s Claude guidance covers a personal account moving into a Claude Team or Enterprise organization. OpenAI’s guidance covers a personal ChatGPT workspace moving into ChatGPT Business or Enterprise.
  • Moving between providers: Plan to export or retain what policy permits, then deliberately rebuild and test the destination workflow. Do not assume a source account export can be imported as a working project, assistant, or team workspace elsewhere.

Feature names, account eligibility, file limits, rollout status, and administrative controls can change. Before using a destination, check its current documentation for the exact app or workspace surface and account type your team will use.

1. Inventory the work before touching accounts

Start with recurring workflows and their owners, not with a bulk chat export. For each workflow, record what it does, who uses it, what it depends on, and how the team decides whether the result is acceptable. Separate durable reference knowledge from temporary conversation history.

  • Instructions: Shared prompts, custom instructions, role or style guidance, decision rules, and required output formats.
  • Knowledge: Project files, reference documents, templates, data dictionaries, and the authoritative location and owner for each.
  • Working state: Useful prior decisions, unresolved questions, and current project status.
  • Reusable configurations: Custom assistants, skills, Gems, GPTs, and other saved configurations or procedures.
  • Dependencies: Connected apps, repositories, cloud folders, API connections, automation triggers, and the people or accounts that authorize them.
  • Access and governance: Workspace membership, project permissions, retention rules, compliance requirements, and offboarding responsibilities.
  • Deliverables and recovery: Outputs that must remain available, published or externally shared material, and the fallback plan if the destination fails.

For example, Claude Projects combine project knowledge with project-specific instructions. Claude Team and Enterprise project sharing supports view and edit permissions subject to administrator controls, according to Anthropic’s project guidance. A destination map should therefore account for both the knowledge layer and the instruction layer, rather than treating copied chat text as a complete replacement.

2. Preserve source material through an approved route

Before account changes, decide which records need to be retained, where migration copies may be stored, who may access them, and when those copies should be deleted. Follow company policy and any legal hold, retention, or audit requirements; an individual export is not automatically a complete record of shared organization content.

Personal Claude accounts

Anthropic’s guidance for moving a personal Claude account into an organization recommends exporting account data before manually discontinuing the personal account when a copy is needed. Confirm the current account-data export procedure and save the result in an organization-approved location.

Claude Team or Enterprise organization data

Anthropic’s Privacy Center says only a Primary Owner can initiate a self-serve organization export. The documented path is Organization settings > Data and privacy > Export Data; the download link is sent by email and expires 24 hours after delivery. Data already deleted by a user or by enterprise retention settings is not included in exports initiated afterward. These details apply to the documented Claude organization export, not to every assistant provider or export type.

Enterprise compliance retrieval

For Claude Enterprise compliance needs, Anthropic describes a Compliance API for retrieving chats, files, projects, and attachments for eDiscovery, DLP enforcement, and account-deletion responses when the organization has a Compliance Access Key with the required retrieval scope. This is a compliance interface, not a general-purpose import into another assistant. Retention policies and hard deletion affect what remains retrievable.

3. Map each workflow to the destination

For every inventoried workflow, document the destination feature or manual replacement, the owner, and a test that proves it works. The table is a planning aid; it does not imply that a particular destination supports every component or an automated import.

Source component Destination work Validation question
Project or custom instructions Recreate them in the destination’s project, assistant, skill, or instruction feature. Does the assistant follow critical rules on routine and edge-case requests?
Project knowledge and files Re-upload or connect approved sources; preserve version and owner information. Can the assistant find the authoritative current source and distinguish it from stale material?
Chat history Archive, selectively summarize, or retain it in the source according to policy. Does the workflow need searchable historical records, or only durable decisions and context?
Connected apps and repositories Reauthorize with approved accounts and least-privilege access. Does each workflow access only the data it should, and can an owner revoke access?
Custom assistants, skills, or automations Rebuild or replace unsupported actions and triggers. Are outputs, approvals, error handling, schedules, and ownership correct?
Shared projects and team access Recreate membership, view and edit rights, and ownership. Can authorized people use and maintain the workflow without overexposing it?
Published artifacts and public links Save and republish only when permitted; update references to old links. Do recipients retain intended access, and are old links handled appropriately?

For each workflow, also capture its input data, expected output, quality check, business criticality, and a named person who can maintain it. These details make it possible to validate the work rather than merely confirm that files appeared in a new workspace.

4. Rebuild a representative workflow first

Choose one meaningful, relatively low-risk workflow and reconstruct it end to end. Start with the smallest durable context that makes the task reliable: clear instructions, approved reference material, example inputs and outputs, and a quality checklist. Keep a full history separately if retention policy requires it; an uncurated archive should not be the sole operational knowledge source.

If the destination is ChatGPT Business or Enterprise

OpenAI documents an in-product migration for a personal ChatGPT workspace into ChatGPT Business or Enterprise. Its supported content includes conversations, files, custom GPTs, Projects, saved memory, and personalization, subject to exclusions. This applies to the documented ChatGPT account transition; it is not a Claude-to-ChatGPT importer. The documented flow does not let users select individual chats, projects, or files, so inspect and preserve an export first if selective retention matters.

If the destination is Gemini

Check which Gemini app or Workspace surface the team will use and verify the feature state at migration time. Google Workspace Help, in guidance last updated September 30, 2026, says Gems are scheduled to be phased out in favor of skills on a staged timeline. It says Gemini-app skills do not currently sync with Workspace-app skills, and advises manually rebuilding critical Gems and re-uploading knowledge files. The guidance also advises administrators to replace Workspace Studio flows that use the Ask a Gem step. This is a Google-specific transition, not a Claude export or universal migration rule.

5. Pilot and validate before expanding

Run representative tasks in the existing and destination workflows using comparable inputs. Record concrete failures and fix them before moving dependent users. Validation should cover the whole system, not just the assistant’s prose.

  • Does it follow the required instructions and produce the expected format?
  • Can it find and accurately use the right current files?
  • Are required citations, links, structured outputs, and approval steps preserved?
  • Do permissions and sharing prevent access by unauthorized people?
  • Do integrations work, and does the workflow clearly signal when a connection is missing?
  • Does it handle ambiguous or difficult inputs safely and escalate for review when required?
  • Is there an auditable record and a known owner for updates and incidents?

Have workflow owners sign off. Bring in security, IT, privacy, legal, or compliance reviewers when the data or policy requires it. Document a fallback plan that accounts for one-way account moves and the source’s retention rules.

6. Cut over in stages and retire the source only after sign-off

Move a pilot group first, then expand by workflow or team. Tell users where the new workflow lives, who owns it, how to report missing content, and what will happen to the old account and its integrations. Keep the source available until required data is preserved and the destination passes the agreed checks.

Provider-specific account moves have their own exclusions and recovery consequences. Anthropic describes a personal Claude move into an organization as one-way. Its guidance says custom skills do not migrate; connected app sign-ins are revoked; user-added custom connectors must be added again; published artifacts and public chat links do not carry over; and Cowork desktop sessions remain local. It advises users to export skills, save published artifacts and public-link content, note connected apps, and reconnect them.

OpenAI likewise says migrated ChatGPT content is controlled by the destination organization and may become inaccessible if a user loses workspace access; it does not move back to a personal workspace. Its post-migration checklist includes reviewing conversations, GPTs, Projects, Library, automations, saved memory, personalization, plugins, and connected apps. Those statements describe OpenAI’s documented personal-to-business or Enterprise migration, not a cross-provider move.

How to compare destination assistants

There is no universal winner established by the provider migration guidance. Compare options against actual team workflows and governance needs, not feature names alone.

  • Workflow fit: Can the assistant complete required tasks and produce the formats your team needs?
  • Context portability: Which files, instructions, history, assistants, and preferences can be moved, exported, or only rebuilt?
  • Knowledge handling: How are sources stored, searched, refreshed, and permissioned?
  • Integrations: Are required systems supported, and what happens to authorization when users or workspaces change?
  • Administration and security: Can administrators manage membership, access, retention, audit, connectors, and data residency as required?
  • Collaboration: Can people share reusable work with suitable view and edit rights?
  • Recovery and exit: What can be exported, what moves one way, and how can the team recover if access is lost?
  • Operational change: What training, rebuilding, validation, and ongoing support will be needed?

Provider interfaces and migration availability change over time. In particular, treat the September 30, 2026 Google Workspace Help update as a dated snapshot of a staged Gems-to-skills transition; confirm current rollout status before planning around it.
