You can export ChatGPT data, but the official documentation reviewed does not describe a native Claude tool that turns a ChatGPT export into separate, searchable Claude conversations. Plan on rebuilding selected context instead: keep the export as a secure backup, move only useful information into Claude Projects or instructions, and connect source tools when that makes more sense than copying old chats.

Can you import ChatGPT history into Claude?

There is no confirmed one-click ChatGPT-to-Claude history migration in the official documentation reviewed. An exported file may be useful as a reference, but uploading a file or copying material into Claude is not the same as importing conversations as native Claude chats.

OpenAI documents a different workflow: an eligible user can upload exported conversation data to a new conversation in another personal ChatGPT account. OpenAI says this does not merge accounts or move conversations into the destination account’s chat history. It does not recreate the original sidebar or transfer subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, files, or workspace access. The instructions refer to files such as conversations.json in the export ZIP. See OpenAI’s account-transfer instructions.

What can you carry over to Claude?

Approach What it preserves Does it create old chats in Claude?
Keep the ChatGPT export A private archive of exported data for reference No
Build a Claude Project Selected documents, text, code, and project instructions for work in that project No; project knowledge is context, not imported conversation history
Use Claude past-chat search Search of eligible Claude conversations, where the feature is available No; it concerns Claude chats, not ChatGPT exports
Connect supported tools or local resources Access to selected external sources, subject to connector support and permissions No; it provides access rather than converting old chats

ChatGPT export

For eligible personal accounts, ChatGPT provides a data export. OpenAI lists signed-in Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users as eligible to request one. Self-service exports are unavailable for Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces; ask the workspace owner about access. An eligible Edu workspace may export if its administrator enables the option. Account controls can vary, so check the options shown in your account. Details are in OpenAI’s data controls guidance.

Claude Projects and instructions

Projects are available on Claude paid plans. A Project has its own chat history and knowledge base; you can add relevant documents, text, or code and set project instructions for chats in that workspace. Information from one Project chat is not automatically shared with other chats unless it is added to project knowledge. Use this to provide durable context for a particular body of work, not to recreate your ChatGPT archive. See Anthropic’s Projects overview and personalization feature guidance.

Past-chat search

Anthropic says past-chat search is rolling out to Max, Team, and Enterprise users, with expansion to other plans planned. It can search chats outside Projects and conversations within an individual Project, subject to feature boundaries. Availability can change; check whether the feature appears in your account. It searches Claude conversations, not ChatGPT exports.

Connectors

Anthropic documents remote web connectors for supported cloud services and local desktop extensions for selected files, applications, and system resources. Availability, setup, data flow, and permissions depend on the connector and plan. If your useful context already lives in a supported service or local files, connecting that source may be more practical than copying a large archive. Review access permissions before enabling a connector. See Anthropic’s connector guidance.

How to move useful context safely

  1. Check export access. In ChatGPT, review the account’s data controls or privacy options. If you use a managed Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspace, ask its owner or administrator rather than assuming you can export directly.
  2. Request and download your archive. Follow the export controls available in your account. Treat the ZIP and its contents as sensitive: OpenAI warns that exported data can contain sensitive account information. Keep the download link and files secure.
  3. Preserve the original and work from a copy. Keep the full export private as a backup. From a separate working copy, select only conversations and material that remain useful; avoid moving unrelated personal or confidential content into a new service.
  4. Make a concise context document. Extract durable preferences, project facts, terminology, and active instructions into a short document rather than treating every old exchange as necessary. Put relevant material in a Claude Project’s knowledge base and add project instructions when appropriate.
  5. Consider source connections. If the authoritative information is in a supported cloud service or local file, review connector availability and permissions before connecting it. Do not grant broader access than the task requires.
  6. Check the rebuilt workflow. Try representative tasks and verify important facts and instructions against their source documents. Keep your ChatGPT account available until the new setup works for your needs.

Which migration approach should you choose?

  • Keep an archive if you want a record to consult occasionally. It takes little restructuring, but it does not make the material part of Claude’s native chat history.
  • Build a Project if you have a continuing topic or workflow that needs selected reference material and consistent instructions. You choose what to carry over, but organizing it takes manual work.
  • Use connectors if current source documents in supported tools matter more than old assistant exchanges. This can avoid duplicating material, but requires checking feature availability and access permissions.
  • Use past-chat search if you need to find earlier Claude conversations and the feature is available on your plan. It does not search imported ChatGPT history.

The official sources do not establish migration-fidelity benchmarks or validate third-party ChatGPT-to-Claude migration utilities. Before giving a third-party service access to an export, investigate its operator, data handling, permissions, and current terms; do not assume it is safe or reliable.

Can you export Claude data later?

Anthropic provides its own export controls, which are separate from importing ChatGPT data. Individual Claude Free, Pro, and Max users with active accounts can export user information and chat history from the web app or Claude Desktop. Team Primary Owners can export user information and chat history; Enterprise Primary Owners can request organization data through Data management. Anthropic says the download link arrives by email and expires 24 hours after delivery. See Anthropic’s Claude export instructions.
