Migrating an AI application means replacing one provider’s API contract and model behavior with another’s—not simply changing a model name or API key. Inventory what the application must keep doing, map the target’s API and capabilities, test quality and operations against representative workloads, then route traffic gradually with a rollback path.

What should you preserve during a provider migration?

Start by defining the application’s behavioral contract: what users expect, what the model may do, and what must remain under application control. A migration is successful only if the new path meets your requirements for task outcomes and operations—not merely if requests return a response.

  • User-facing behavior: workflows, expected results, output formats, and acceptable response quality.
  • Tools and side effects: available tools, when they may be called, valid arguments, expected side effects, and the resulting application state.
  • Safety and permissions: authorization checks, business rules, refusal handling, and input/output safeguards.
  • Inputs and state: text, images, audio, or other modalities; conversation history; durable state; and how a session resumes.
  • Operational targets: acceptable latency, reliability, error behavior, token reporting, and cost per successful task.

For voice or agentic workflows, record expected tool actions and final application state as well as the visible answer. Those details make it possible to spot a migration that sounds plausible but fails to complete the work.

How do you prepare a migration baseline?

Set the target and constraints

Write down why you are moving—such as a capability requirement, resilience, deployment constraints, cost, latency, or a provider lifecycle change—and identify the exact target model and hosting path. A direct provider API, a cloud-hosted endpoint, and a gateway may expose different features. Record geography and data-residency requirements before choosing a model or processing path; the OpenAI API deployment checklist specifically calls for checking residency eligibility.

Define acceptance criteria before comparing providers. Include minimum task success and safety requirements, output-contract validity, latency bounds, reliability, and a cost target measured per successful task. Headline model prices alone do not establish the cost of completing your application’s work.

Inventory the existing implementation

Trace provider-specific dependencies through real user workflows. Search code and configuration for SDKs, endpoint URLs, model identifiers, credentials, request parameters, prompt templates, JSON schemas, tool definitions, retry and timeout logic, streaming consumers, usage accounting, logging, and data-retention settings. The OpenAI migration guide shows that even APIs from one provider can differ in endpoint, output, tools, streaming, and state behavior.

Save representative evaluations

Before changing prompts or implementation, create a fixed set of representative cases. Include common inputs, edge cases, safety-sensitive or refusal cases, tool selection and arguments, downstream state changes, and output-format checks. For complex systems, separate evaluations for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tools, prompt chains, and agentic workflows so a failure can be localized. Google Cloud recommends granular evaluations and online evaluation for critical or real-time systems in its Gemini migration guidance.

How do you map the old API to the new one?

Make a compatibility map for each application flow before implementing the replacement. Keep an internal application contract stable where practical, and translate it at a provider-specific boundary. That boundary can reduce integration work, but it cannot make different models behave identically.

Area What to map and verify
Requests and results Source and target endpoint, request fields, response shape, typed output items, and how the application extracts the final answer.
Tools Tool definitions, schema format, model-request lifecycle, argument validation, execution, returned results, and follow-up model calls.
Structured output Schema-constrained output support, supported schema features, and validation or recovery when the result is invalid.
Streaming Event types and order, completion signals, partial output handling, disconnects, and retry behavior.
State Who owns conversation state, how context is carried between turns, and how sessions resume after errors or restarts.
Errors and operations Timeouts, rate limits, retries, authentication failures, usage fields, and information available to logs and monitoring.

For example, OpenAI documents that Responses returns typed output items while Chat Completions uses messages and choices; structured-output and function-calling shapes also differ, as do state options. Its migration guide organizes the change around switching endpoints, reading typed output, and deciding how state is carried. These are OpenAI-specific examples, not a universal specification for other providers.

Which features should you check with the target provider?

Build a checklist from the features the application actually uses, then verify support for the exact provider, model version, and hosting path. A feature with the same name may have different limits or behavior.

Capability Migration checks
Inputs and context Required text and media inputs, context and output limits, media handling, and any changes to token accounting.
Tools and hosted functions Function/tool schemas, invocation behavior, supported hosted search, file, or code tools, and the complete return-to-model loop.
Output controls Constrained structured output, sampling or reasoning controls, refusal behavior, and content filters.
Streaming and state Streaming events and completion behavior, state persistence, and how multi-turn context is resumed.
Usage and deployment Input, output, or other usage fields; cost visibility; authentication; retention; regional availability; and data residency.

Provider-specific changes can be subtle. Google’s Gemini migration guide, for example, describes changed content-filter defaults, Top-K being unsupported in later Gemini models, thinking_level replacing thinking_budget for Gemini 3 Pro and later, thought-signature requirements, media tokenization changes, and a changed PDF usage-metadata modality. These examples apply to the documented Gemini changes; do not assume they apply to another provider or model.

The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation also warns that providers differ and that unsupported tools or multimodal inputs should not be sent to a backend that cannot handle them. If you use an SDK adapter, validate the exact backend for structured outputs, tool calling, usage reporting, and any Responses-specific behavior your application needs.

How should you adapt prompts and application logic?

Begin with the existing prompts, but treat them as inputs to evaluation—not as proof that the new model will behave the same way. Test and revise instructions against the target’s documented input and output requirements, using the saved baseline to judge whether changes improve or harm task outcomes.

Keep authorization, business rules, tool execution, and irreversible actions enforced by your application. The model can request a tool action, but the application should validate the request and control whether it runs. For a tool-heavy or multimodal flow, test the full lifecycle: the request, validation and execution, result handoff, streaming events visible to consumers, and behavior after a disconnect or retry.

If the target offers provider-managed orchestration or state, decide explicitly whether to adopt it or retain application-managed state. Document what is stored, where it lives, and how the application resumes context across turns.

How do you test quality and operating performance?

Run the same evaluation cases against the old and new paths where possible. Keep code-level regression tests separate from model-quality evaluations: code can run correctly while responses become less useful. Google Cloud makes this distinction in its Gemini guidance and cautions that prompt behavior is difficult to predict without testing.

  • Operations: latency, errors, token usage, and cost per successful task.

Compare results against the acceptance criteria set before implementation. OpenAI’s deployment checklist recommends comparing task success, latency, token categories, and cost per successful task. OpenAI also reports that, in its internal evaluations, reasoning models used with Responses improved SWE-bench results by 3% compared with Chat Completions under the same prompt and setup, and that internal tests found 40% to 80% improved cache utilization compared with Chat Completions. Those are vendor-reported comparisons of OpenAI APIs, accessed in 2026; they are not independently verified cross-provider migration results or a prediction for your application.

How do you roll out the new provider safely?

  1. Put the new path behind a routing control. Use a feature flag or equivalent mechanism so the application can direct selected requests to the new integration.
  2. Start with limited workloads. Begin with internal use or a bounded flow whose outcomes can be evaluated against the saved baseline.
  3. Compare against release thresholds. Review task quality, errors, latency, cost, and safety signals before increasing traffic.
  4. Expand in stages. Route more traffic only when the evidence meets the team’s agreed quality and operating targets.
  5. Retain rollback capability. Keep the previous path available until the replacement meets release criteria on representative and live workloads.
  6. Track model lifecycle notices. Maintain an inventory of provider and model versions and deprecation dates, and check current official notices during implementation.

Lifecycle changes can make migration mandatory: OpenAI’s current Responses migration guide states that the Assistants API was officially sunset on August 26, 2026, and is no longer available. That date applies to this OpenAI API, not to other providers.

Should you use a direct API or a gateway?

A gateway or adapter may reduce the amount of provider-specific integration work or support routing across providers. It also adds a compatibility layer, so verify the actual upstream backend rather than assuming a common interface guarantees feature parity.

Decision axis Questions to answer
Feature depth Does the exact path support the tools, structured outputs, multimodal inputs, hosted functions, and state features the application requires?
Compatibility and control What translation does the adapter perform? Can the application still use provider-specific settings and control backend behavior?
Operational visibility Does the path report usage, errors, and streaming events needed for monitoring and cost analysis? Some adapter backends may not populate usage metrics by default.
Evaluation and rollout Can comparable workloads be routed and measured using the same evaluation inputs and operating criteria?
Deployment requirements Does the selected hosting path meet requirements for geography, data residency, authentication, and retention under current provider terms?

There is no universally preferable route in the cited provider documentation. Choose based on the required feature depth, control, visibility, and deployment constraints, then test the exact path you intend to deploy.
