Measure three things before you order: the space where the item will go, the entire route it must travel to get there, and the exact product’s installation and operating requirements. A sofa can fit a living room but fail at a stair turn; a refrigerator can fit its opening but lack the clearance its doors need. Use the current listing and model-specific instructions—not category averages—to check all three.
What measurements do you need before buying furniture or appliances online?
Start with the exact product’s dimensions, then measure both the destination and the delivery route. A tape measure, paper and pencil are enough to make a useful record; painter’s tape can help visualize a furniture footprint on the floor.
- Product: height, width and depth from the specific listing. For appliances, find the exact model’s installation instructions and note any cut-out, ventilation or hinge-clearance requirements.
- Destination: the usable room dimensions and the locations of doors, windows, steps, built-ins, fireplaces, outlets, vents and other fixed features.
- Route: the clear dimensions of every opening and constrained turn between the entrance and the destination, including halls, stairs, landings and elevators.
- Use: space needed to pull out chairs, open appliance doors or drawers, and move through the room.
For each candidate, compare the dimensions that matter to its shape and route. The limiting factor may be a turn or a low ceiling rather than the narrowest doorway.
How do I measure my room for furniture?
- Sketch the room. Draw a rough floor plan and mark doors, windows, steps, built-ins and other fixed features. Note where you took each measurement.
- Measure length and width. Record the usable dimensions of the intended area. If walls, floors or ceilings seem uneven, measure at more than one point and note the narrowest usable dimension.
- Check the planned footprint. Use painter’s tape to mark the furniture’s listed floor dimensions. Check whether it blocks circulation or access to outlets, vents, switches or other features.
- Leave space for use. For dining rooms, The Home Depot’s 2026 planning guidance recommends 3 to 4 feet between the table edge and wall so chairs can be pulled away. Treat this as planning guidance, not a universal building requirement.
A floor outline helps you judge scale, but it cannot show whether a bulky item can make the trip into the room. Check the route separately.

How do I know if a sofa or other furniture will fit through a doorway?
Walk the delivery path from the likely entrance to the room and measure every constrained point—not just the front door. Room & Board advises measuring doorway and hallway height and width while accounting for handrails, doorknobs and trim that cannot be removed (Measuring for Furniture Delivery).
- Doorways and openings: measure the clear opening and account for trim, knobs, fixtures and anything that reduces usable space.
- Hallways and turns: record the narrowest width and check whether there is clearance beyond the opening to turn the item.
- Stairs and landings: measure stair width, ceiling height over the steps, and landing width and depth. Include handrails and other protrusions.
- Elevators: check the door opening plus the car’s interior height, width and depth. Include handrails, lights and other protrusions.
Then compare those route measurements with the item’s dimensions and possible orientations. For upholstered furniture, width and diagonal depth can determine whether it can angle through an opening; for storage furniture, diagonal height and depth may matter. When available, check the dimensions of the packaged or delivered item as well as the assembled product. Confirm with the chosen retailer whether its delivery process involves removing doors or offers measuring assistance; those services can vary.
How much space do I need for a refrigerator?
Use the exact refrigerator model’s current specifications and installation instructions. Measure the opening at its narrowest points and compare its height, width and depth with the model. Then check the specified ventilation and hinge clearances, and make sure the doors and drawers can open fully without hitting a wall, island or cabinet.

Do not treat spacing examples from a general refrigerator guide as universal requirements. The Home Depot’s kitchen-appliance guide, last updated April 22, 2025, includes examples, but the required clearances depend on the model (How to Buy a Refrigerator). Follow the instructions for the exact model you are considering.
How should I compare multiple items?
Make a short comparison using the tightest relevant constraint rather than relying on a single headline dimension.

What should I recheck before placing the order?
- Open the current listing for the exact item or model and verify its dimensions.
- For an appliance, review that model’s installation instructions for cut-out dimensions, ventilation and opening clearances.
- Re-measure the route’s critical openings, turns and clearances, and compare them with the product’s dimensions and possible orientations.
- Keep your sketch and measurements available when ordering or arranging delivery. GE Appliances’ support guide puts the practical rule simply: “Always measure twice!” (Appliance – Prepping Pathways and Measuring Your Space).
General diagrams and retailer guidance are useful aids, not a fit guarantee. Confirm any uncertain dimensions or delivery details with the retailer and rely on the current instructions for the exact product.
