To measure your height at home, stand barefoot on a hard, level floor against a flat wall, use a level book or rigid ruler to mark the top of your head, then measure from the floor to the mark. A second person makes it easier to keep the headpiece level and read the tape accurately.
What you need
- A flat wall without a baseboard or molding at the floor
- A hard, level floor—not carpet
- A rigid, flat book or ruler
- A metal tape measure
- A pencil or other removable way to mark the wall
- Ideally, another person to position the headpiece and make the mark
How to measure your height against a wall
- Choose the spot. Stand on firm flooring beside a flat wall. Avoid a baseboard or molding that would keep your feet from standing at floor level against the wall.
- Remove anything that affects the measurement. Take off your shoes and hat. Move or undo hairstyles and remove ornaments that stop the book or ruler from resting on the crown of your head.
- Get into position. Stand upright with your feet flat and together, legs straight, arms at your sides, and shoulders level. Look straight ahead rather than tipping your chin up or down.
- Align your body comfortably. Stand tall against the wall. Let your head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels touch it if your body shape allows, but do not force an uncomfortable posture. Keep your trunk vertical and shoulders relaxed.
- Position the headpiece. Have your helper place the flat book or rigid ruler on your crown. Keep it level with the floor and at a right angle to the wall, then slide it down until it firmly touches your head. The helper should bring their eyes level with the book or ruler before marking.
- Mark the wall. Mark where the bottom edge of the book or ruler meets the wall.
- Measure and record. Use a metal tape measure to measure vertically from the floor to the mark. Write down the result and its unit, such as inches or centimeters.
These steps follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s home instructions for measuring children (CDC, Measuring Children’s Height and Weight). The same basic wall-and-headpiece geometry can be used for an adult home check.
Details that help avoid a misleading mark
Start at floor level
A hard floor gives a firm starting point for the tape. Carpet can compress underfoot, and a baseboard or molding can prevent you from standing squarely against the wall at floor level.
Keep the head level
Looking straight ahead helps keep your head in a neutral position. The book or ruler should be horizontal; its lower edge, not the top of your head guessed by eye, determines where to mark.

Do not force all four contact points
Depending on body shape, the head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels may not all touch the wall at once. CDC/NCHS guidance for standing-height measurement says to obtain the best measurement possible while keeping the trunk vertical, shoulders and arms relaxed, and head aligned. Do not arch or strain just to press every point against the wall. (See the CDC/NCHS Anthropometry Procedures Manual.)
Use the same method if you recheck
Record the unit and repeat the measurement with the same posture and setup if you check again. CDC’s 2024 instructions for measuring children say to record height to the nearest 1/8 inch or 0.1 centimeter. That is a recording increment in those instructions, not a guaranteed accuracy level or error margin for every improvised home measurement.

CDC identifies a wall-mounted or portable stadiometer as preferred equipment for school height measurement, with a stated design precision of one-eighth inch in its 2015 guidance (CDC, BMI Measurement in Schools – Safeguard 4). NHANES describes a fixed vertical backboard and adjustable headpiece in its professional procedures manual. The sources do not provide a head-to-head accuracy trial comparing a household wall setup with a stadiometer, so the home method should not be treated as equivalent to calibrated measurement equipment.
