For electricity used over a gaming session, record the meter’s accumulated kilowatt-hours (kWh) and the session duration. This measures the computer’s whole-system AC input—not just the CPU or graphics card.
What a wall measurement tells you
A plug-in meter measures the power entering the device or devices connected to it. If you connect only the PC tower, the result is the tower’s wall-side draw. If you also connect a monitor or other equipment through the meter, the result includes those devices too; label the scope clearly when recording or comparing measurements.
Software readings for individual components and estimates based on component specifications answer different questions. They do not directly measure the complete computer’s AC input at the outlet. PC Gamer explains this distinction and the use of a wall meter for whole-system measurement in its guide to measuring a PC’s total power consumption.
How to measure your PC at the wall
- Check meter compatibility and ratings. Confirm that the meter’s outlet type and voltage suit your local electrical system, and that its maximum load is suitable for the equipment you plan to connect. The P3 International P4400 manual warns: “Do not exceed maximum ratings as detailed on label.” Follow the label and instructions for the specific meter you own.
- Connect the meter directly to a suitable wall outlet. Plug the PC into the meter. The P4400 manual lists a computer as an example of a device to measure; its instructions and ratings are specific to that model.
- Choose what to include. For a PC-only reading, connect the tower alone. To measure the full gaming setup, include the monitor and any other devices you want counted, and make a note of what is connected.
- Record idle power. Let the PC settle into its usual idle state, then note the meter’s watt reading.
- Measure a representative workload. Run a game or repeatable task and observe the watts display. Record the game, settings, duration, and whether you noted a momentary reading or an average. A single observation is not a universal figure for gaming power: readings depend on the workload and conditions.
- Measure session energy if needed. Note the cumulative kWh at the start and end of a session, or reset the meter’s energy counter if its instructions allow it. Record the elapsed time as well. The P4400 manual describes cumulative kWh readings; consult your own meter’s instructions for its controls.
Watts, VA, and kWh: which reading to use
- Watts (W): Active power at the time of the reading. Use it to compare the PC’s idle and loaded states.
- Volt-amps (VA): Apparent power. The P4400 displays VA separately from active watts, so do not report a VA value as watts.
- Kilowatt-hours (kWh): Accumulated energy over time. Use this for estimating electricity used during a session and its cost.
To calculate average power across a session, divide the energy used by the duration in hours, then multiply by 1,000:

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Average watts = session kWh ÷ session hours × 1,000
For example, use your own measured kWh and elapsed hours in that formula; the result summarizes the session, including changes in load, rather than describing every instant. To estimate the session’s electricity cost, multiply its measured kWh by the cost per kWh on your electricity bill. JCE Co-op’s Kill A Watt meter guide also explains energy and cost calculations.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Choosing a meter and avoiding misleading comparisons
Choose a plug-in electricity meter that matches your region’s outlet and voltage, has ratings appropriate for the connected load, and displays both watts and cumulative kWh if you want to measure live draw and session energy. Consider whether its display and logging functions suit the length of the measurement. The P4400 is one example of a meter with watts and cumulative kWh readings, not a universal recommendation: check the ratings on the meter you use.
When comparing results, keep the measurement boundary and workload consistent. A tower-only measurement cannot be compared directly with a reading that also includes a monitor. Likewise, readings from different games, settings, or moments may differ. For a session-level summary, report the measured kWh, duration, workload, and included devices rather than presenting one instantaneous watt reading as the PC’s fixed gaming consumption.
