To tell whether a car will fit, compare the exact vehicle’s dimensions with the usable space at its tightest points. Measure the entrance separately from the interior, check width, depth and height, and account for mirrors, obstacles, door opening and access. A car may fit between the garage walls but still be unable to pass through the opening or leave enough room for people and storage.
1. Find dimensions for the exact vehicle
Look up the manufacturer’s specifications for the vehicle’s model year and configuration, then record its length, width and height. Honda recommends comparing a measured garage or parking space with those specifications; its vehicle-buying knowledge center says its website lists vehicle length, width and height in the specifications section.
Check what the stated width includes. Body width may not account for mirrors, accessories or other protrusions. If the specification does not clearly cover the parts that matter to your approach or parking, confirm the dimensions for the actual vehicle and configuration.
2. Measure the entrance separately
Measure the garage-door opening’s clear width and height, rather than relying on a nominal door size. Also check for low or narrow points along the route, including door hardware, tracks and other obstructions. A door-system guide distinguishes the opening from installation dimensions such as sideroom, headroom and backroom; those installation measurements are not a guarantee that a vehicle will fit. 3. Measure the usable space inside
Measure the width and depth where the car will actually sit. Use the narrowest usable points, and note anything that takes up space or could interfere with parking or access:
- Posts, steps, shelving and stored items
- Ceiling height, tracks or objects stored overhead
- Anything that narrows the route or makes turning into the space difficult
A sketch can make constraints easier to spot. The garage measurement worksheet recommends recording garage-door dimensions, ceiling dimensions when relevant, the vehicle’s make, model and year, and a sketch of the space and its constraints.

4. Compare every limiting dimension
Check each measurement independently. Passing one does not compensate for failing another.

| Overhead clearance | Clear height along the parking area and approach, including tracks and stored objects. |
| Approach and use | Turning constraints, room to open doors, passenger access and access to nearby storage. |
If a comparison is close, recheck the measurement that controls the result before relying on it. No universal pass/fail score or extra clearance that guarantees comfortable use is established by the sources cited here.

5. Distinguish vehicle fit from parking-space standards
Published stall dimensions and design recommendations serve particular purposes; they are not universal tests of whether a specific vehicle will fit or be usable.
Accessible parking in the United States
The U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards apply to regulated accessible spaces, not every private garage or ordinary parking stall. For marked spaces, width is measured from the centerline of the markings, subject to an exception when a space or aisle is not adjacent to another one. The standards set a minimum width of 96 inches (2440 mm) for an accessible car space and 132 inches (3350 mm) for an accessible van space. An exception permits a 96-inch van space when it has a 96-inch access aisle. These are accessibility requirements, not general car-fit dimensions. See the U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards.

Garage and carport design guidance in Victoria
Victorian Government guidance recommends a minimum inside measurement of 6 metres long and 3.5 metres wide for a single garage or carport space, and 5.5 metres wide for a double space. For tandem arrangements, it recommends adding 500 mm between spaces. These recommendations are specific to Victoria and building design; they do not establish whether a particular vehicle will fit an existing space. Parking-garage design guidance
A Federal Highway Administration-hosted parking-garage report describes a 9-foot stall width as optimum for most self-park applications in its design discussion, citing door opening, convenient access and alignment margin. That is planning guidance, not an assurance that every car fits or a statement of what a particular jurisdiction requires. See the FHWA-hosted parking-garage report.

Use the same checklist when comparing vehicles or spaces
For a consistent comparison, record these items for each vehicle and candidate space:
- Vehicle length, width and height for the exact model year and configuration
- Relevant width including mirrors or other protrusions
- Entrance width and height
- Usable interior width and depth
- Overhead obstacles and clearance
- Turning or approach constraints
- Room to open doors, get in and out, and reach storage
The title does not identify a vehicle, space or jurisdiction, so there is no basis to declare a particular car a fit or determine which local rules apply. Verify the exact vehicle dimensions and the limiting measurements at the actual space.
