This captures only the measurable slice of AI search: GA4 groups Google AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks under Organic Search, and an AI-influenced visit may not retain an identifiable referrer.
What GA4 can identify as AI search traffic
GA4’s default channel group includes an AI Assistant channel for visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, and Grok. Google’s definition places non-ad clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in Organic Search, not AI Assistant. Google’s channel definitions therefore let you report some third-party assistant referrals as a distinct channel, but do not provide a separate standard GA4 total for AI Overview or AI Mode clicks.
Check your property’s actual source rows and current default channel group before building a separate classification. Google’s examples are not a guarantee that every platform, referral format, or future source will be recognized; platform definitions can change.
Set up GA4 to measure AI-referred sessions
1. Define the outcomes that matter
Choose the business actions you want to measure: for example, a qualified lead submission, completed purchase, trial start, or signup. Confirm that the corresponding GA4 events fire when those actions occur, then mark the meaningful events as key events. Where an applicable recommended event name exists, follow Google’s convention rather than inventing a competing name. See Google’s recommended events.

2. Establish a baseline in Traffic acquisition
- In GA4, open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
- Use a session-scoped dimension such as Session source / medium or Session default channel group to identify the source or channel that started each session.
- Choose a consistent date range and record sessions, users, landing pages, engagement, configured key events, and revenue if revenue collection is reliable.
- Compare AI Assistant sessions with Organic Search and Referral traffic, naming the dimension and scope used in each comparison.
Traffic acquisition uses session-scoped dimensions. First-user dimensions answer a different question: how users first arrived. Google documents these scope distinctions in its traffic-source dimensions guidance.
3. Check the default AI Assistant channel before making a custom one
Look at the default channel group and source values already present in your property. If they meet your reporting need, use them rather than maintaining a parallel classification.

4. Create a custom channel only when you need it
If the default grouping misses sources you specifically need to report, create a custom channel group with explicit source or URL matching rules. Google provides an AI Assistants channel example and explains how custom channel groups work. Its example uses a regular expression and recommends placing AI Assistants above Referrals so matching sources are assigned to the AI channel first.
Do not copy a broad expression without checking it against your own source values. Document the platforms and rules you include, validate matches, and revise the list as the platforms you intend to measure change. Custom channel groups can be used in acquisition reports and Explorations and applied retroactively to reports.

Use referral tags carefully
OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs automatically include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help publishers identify inbound traffic from ChatGPT search results. This is a documented ChatGPT signal; do not assume other AI services use the same tag. See the OpenAI Publishers and Developers FAQ.
For links your organization controls—such as newsletters, partner campaigns, or promoted content—use consistent UTM parameters if you need to distinguish campaigns. GA4 uses manual UTM values to populate basic traffic-source dimensions such as source, medium, and campaign. Verify that redirects preserve the parameters. Google notes that missing or incomplete UTM values can produce (not set), and redirects or other link handling can strip parameters. Do not add or claim UTM tags on third-party AI citation links you do not control. See Google’s manual tagging guidance.
Connect AI-referred traffic to conversions
For session-level reporting, examine key events and revenue associated with sessions that began from AI Assistant sources. This answers what outcomes were recorded during sessions attributed to those sources; it does not by itself establish that an AI answer caused the outcome.
For credit across multiple interactions, use event-scoped dimensions and label the attribution model shown. Google says session-scoped dimensions use paid and organic channels last click, while event-scoped dimensions follow the property’s selected reporting attribution model, which defaults to data-driven attribution. These views answer different questions. Keep them separate in reports and use Google’s attribution settings documentation to interpret the selected model.
Best Value
| Report element | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| AI-referred sessions | Observed arrivals grouped by source or channel. |
| Landing pages | Pages where measurable AI-referred sessions began. |
| Engagement | Engagement metrics collected consistently for those sessions. |
| Key events and revenue | Recorded outcomes associated with the selected traffic view, if events and revenue are configured. |
| Event-scoped attribution | Credit assigned under the reporting attribution model you identify. |
| Measurement limits | Unobserved influence, missing referrers, and Google AI search clicks included in Organic Search. |
How to report Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Do not label all Google organic sessions as AI Overview or AI Mode visits. GA4’s current default channel definition includes non-ad clicks from both surfaces in Organic Search and excludes them from AI Assistant. Standard GA4 channel reporting therefore supports aggregate Google organic reporting, not a distinct Overview or Mode click total.
If you track AI visibility separately—for example, by recording a defined set of prompts and whether your pages appear in sampled answers—keep those observations separate from site analytics. They can describe visibility in the sample, but do not prove that a particular site session or conversion resulted from an appearance.
Interpret the numbers without overstating attribution
An observed AI referral is evidence that GA4 recorded that arrival source, not proof that AI alone caused a later conversion. Conversely, an AI-influenced visitor may return through a route that no longer carries an identifiable AI referrer. GA4 defines direct / (none) as traffic without a clear referral source and lists missing traffic information, redirects, and ad blockers as possible reasons; it does not quantify what share of AI-influenced visits those causes represent. See Google’s explanation of direct traffic.
Calculate conversion rates from your own consistently configured data. When publishing a rate, state the date range, sample, event definition, and attribution view; do not present a session-level rate and an event-attribution view as if they were the same measure. The official sources cited here define reporting and setup, but do not establish a universal AI search conversion-rate premium or a comparable benchmark.
