Measure AI-assisted product listings with a repeatable evaluation system, not one catch-all “AI quality” score. Check factual claims against approved product data first, then score completeness, shopper relevance, clarity, brand fit and platform compliance separately. Use automated checks for structured facts and trained human reviewers for context and judgment; set release thresholds according to category risk because there is no universal score or pass mark.
Start with the listing’s intended use and risk
Before scoring output, define what the system is producing and where it will appear. Record the fields, product categories, channels, languages and intended audience. Then identify which errors could mislead shoppers, cause harm or violate a platform rule.
Set stricter release gates for high-impact facts such as safety claims, compatibility, regulated attributes and prices. A minor tone mismatch and an incorrect compatibility statement should not carry the same release consequence. The metrics should reflect the actual listing task, not a generic language-quality benchmark.
Build a representative reference set
Create a versioned set of product records that people have reviewed against an authoritative catalog source. Preserve the source facts, expected outcomes, rubric, reviewer explanations, model and prompt versions, and evaluation date. Do not treat unreviewed AI output as a gold-standard answer.

Include both ordinary listings and difficult cases likely to expose failure:
- Sparse or incomplete source data.
- Near-identical variants that differ in size, color, model or included items.
- Conflicting catalog fields or missing dimensions.
- Compatibility, safety, warranty or performance claims.
- Category-specific required attributes and limitations.
For each case, label the facts that must be present, the claims that are supported, and acceptable ways of expressing them. Update the dataset when catalog inputs, channel policies or generation workflows change. AWS Prescriptive Guidance recommends human-curated reference examples, representative data, actionable explanations and component-level insight; its general evaluation practices can be adapted to catalog records and listing errors (AWS Prescriptive Guidance).

Score separate quality dimensions
Keep dimensions visible instead of allowing a strong writing score to conceal a factual or policy failure. This rubric is a starting point; define weights and thresholds for the relevant category and use case.

Use hard release gates for unsupported material facts and policy violations, then use weighted scores for softer qualities. A false specification should not be offset by polished prose. No universal weights or pass threshold are established; document the values you choose and why they suit the category.

Use automation for checks and people for judgment
Automate deterministic checks where the answer can be verified from structured source data: identifiers, variant, dimensions, materials, included items, required fields and exact feed formatting. Rules or structured claim extraction can flag statements without an obvious source. A person should adjudicate ambiguous claims and assess usefulness, clarity, tone and contextual fit.
Give reviewers definitions and examples for each rubric item. Use a second review or a calibration sample to check whether reviewers interpret the rubric consistently. Keep error labels and short rationales, not just a total score, so teams can trace a low result to a concrete correction such as a prompt change, catalog fix or added validation rule.

Text similarity is not a reliable quality verdict by itself. A listing can express a fact accurately in different wording, or reuse catalog language while implying a false relationship. Readability and sentiment scores can help describe surface characteristics, but they do not prove truth, compliance or shopper usefulness. A 2024 preprint by Sanjukta Ghosh compared generated and human product descriptions across 100 products and considered dimensions including readability, clarity, persuasiveness and sentiment; that sample is an example of multidimensional evaluation, not a validated standard for all categories or current models (2024 preprint).
Compare AI-assisted and human-written listings fairly
For a meaningful comparison, use the same products, approved source facts, audience, rubric and review conditions for both versions. Report dimension scores and errors by category, field and error type, alongside any summary score. A single overall number can be useful for tracking, but it should not replace the breakdown needed to see what changed.

Shopper outcomes such as click-through or conversion can add evidence, but they are affected by price, images, availability, placement and promotions as well as listing copy. Use a controlled design where practical, record concurrent changes, and avoid attributing an outcome shift to the text unless the comparison supports that conclusion. Re-run evaluations after meaningful changes to the model, prompt, catalog schema, policy or workflow; validate the evaluator itself as versioned software.
Keep platform compliance distinct from writing quality
Platform-specific rules are not a universal definition of a good listing. Google Merchant Center Help says generative-AI-created titles should use structured_title with digital_source_type set to trained_algorithmic_media; AI-generated descriptions should use structured_description with the corresponding source type. AI-generated images must retain IPTC metadata identifying their source. Check the official requirements at implementation time because merchant-feed rules can change (Google Merchant Center Help).
For Google Search, Google Search Central says it is critical to manually fact-check and review AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing. Its guidance also emphasizes accuracy, quality and relevance, and applies to metadata and structured data as well as page copy. The page was last updated October 1, 2026 UTC (Google Search Central).
Make the result useful for a release decision
A useful evaluation says what decision its evidence supports. Document the dataset version, model and prompt, scoring definitions, reviewers, critical-error gates and category-specific thresholds. Check whether repeated runs and reviewers produce sufficiently stable results for the decision at hand. NIST notes that measurement depends on context and that characteristics such as accuracy, reliability, robustness, explainability, privacy, safety and security require distinct approaches; apply the dimensions relevant to the listing workflow rather than treating them as one score (NIST AI measurement and evaluation). The IAB’s 2026 guidance for adjacent AI-visibility measurement similarly emphasizes fitness of data, stability, reproducibility and transparency; those are useful principles for explaining what a listing score can and cannot establish (IAB framework).
